Chapter 2

I was still awake when it happened.

The scream came at half past midnight — a wolf's scream, which is a different thing entirely from a human one. It starts in the chest and ends somewhere outside the body, raw and animal and wrong. I heard it through the open window I had never closed, and I was on my feet before the echo died.

Sable stirred. Not a howl this time. Just a low, warning vibration, like a string pulled too tight.

I did not go down immediately. I stood at the window and looked at the courtyard below, and I thought about Lilia's smile. The way she had touched her tongue to the blood on her lip. The phone call in the dark.

I thought: *she is faster than I gave her credit for.*

Then I went down, because I am a Healer, and Healers go toward the screaming.

The stairwell was already crowded. Night-watch wolves, two of the junior medics, a handful of pack members who had been in the common room and heard the impact. They parted for me out of habit — Luna coming through, make room — and I saw her at the base of the stairs.

Lilia was on the floor in a partial shift. Her hands had gone to claws, her spine arched wrong, her dark hair fanned across the marble. There was blood on the third step and the fifth step and the landing. Her silk scarf had come loose. The stitches on her neck were intact — I noticed that first, the Healer in me cataloguing before the rest of me could catch up — but her left arm was bent at an angle that made two of the younger wolves look away.

She was crying. Not the polished, strategic tears I had watched her deploy in Declan's direction. These were ugly, gasping sobs, the kind that shook her whole body, and the sound of them filled the stairwell and bounced off the stone walls until it was everywhere at once.

"She pushed me," Lilia said. Her voice broke on every word. "Isla — she pushed me — I tried to hold the railing — I couldn't—"

The wolves around her went very still.

"The pup," she said. "Oh Moon Goddess, the pup—"

The word landed like a stone in still water. I watched the ripple move through the crowd. Watched faces change. Watched eyes find me.

I stood at the edge of the circle and I did not move and I did not speak, because there was nothing to say that would matter now. The story was already written. The fitting this afternoon — Isla struck her in public, everyone saw it, Mara saw it, half the pack had heard about it by dinner. And now this. The jealous Luna, the pregnant Beta, the stairs.

It was clean. I had to give her that. It was very, very clean.

Declan came through the door at the end of the hall at a run.

I had not seen him move like that in years — not the controlled, deliberate stride of an Alpha but something rawer, his shirt half-buttoned, his eyes already scanning the floor before he reached us. His wolf was up. I could feel it from ten feet away, that particular pressure in the air that meant his control was thin.

He dropped to his knees beside Lilia.

He did not look at me.

"I've got you," he said to her, low and rough. "I've got you, Lilia, stay still—"

"She pushed me, Declan." Lilia's hand found his arm. Her claws had retracted. She looked small against the marble floor, and she knew exactly how she looked. "I was coming down to get water and she was at the top of the stairs and she — she said if I didn't leave the pack she would make sure I couldn't stay—"

"That is not what happened," I said.

Declan's head came up.

The look on his face stopped me. Not anger — I had expected anger. Something worse than anger. Something that had already finished thinking and arrived at a conclusion, and the conclusion had my name on it.

"I was in my quarters," I said. "I have been in my quarters since the fitting. I did not come near the stairs. I did not touch her."

"There were witnesses to this afternoon," Rowan said from somewhere behind me. His voice was careful. Pained. "The fitting room. The—"

"I know what happened at the fitting." I kept my eyes on Declan. "I struck her. I will not pretend otherwise. But I did not push her down these stairs."

"Who did, then?" Declan asked.

The question was quiet. That was the worst part. Not shouted, not snarled. Quiet, the way a door sounds when it closes and locks from the other side.

"No one," I said. "She did this herself."

The silence that followed was the kind that has a shape. I could feel it pressing against my ribs.

Lilia made a small, broken sound. She turned her face into Declan's shoulder, and her shoulders shook, and every wolf in that hallway watched their Alpha hold her and watched me stand alone at the edge of the circle, and I understood with absolute clarity that I had already lost.

Not because the lie was convincing. Because it was convenient. Because it gave everyone in this pack a story that required nothing of them — no hard questions, no loyalty to a Luna they had never fully claimed as their own, no confrontation with what their Alpha had been doing in his private quarters.

Declan looked at me over the top of Lilia's head.

Five years. Five years of his hands in my hair and his voice in my mind-link and his mark burning warm on my throat. Five years of standing beside him at every ceremony, healing every wolf he sent to my table, building something I had believed was real.

He looked at me like I was a stranger who had done a terrible thing.

"Get her out of the hall," he said to Rowan. His voice had gone flat. Alpha-flat, the tone that ended conversations. "Take her to the east wing and post a guard."

Not *her quarters.* The east wing. The wing where they put wolves under investigation.

Rowan's hand closed around my arm, gentle and apologetic and useless.

I let him lead me away.

Behind me, I heard Declan murmur something to Lilia, low and private. I heard her exhale — not a sob this time. Something steadier. Something almost like relief.

Sable went silent inside me.

Not the silence of grief. The silence of a wolf who has understood something and is conserving herself for what comes next.

I walked down the hall with Rowan's hand on my arm and I did not look back, and I thought about the smile on Lilia's face in the courtyard last night, and I thought: *she planned this before I ever walked into that medical wing.*

The east wing door closed behind me.

The guard took his position outside.

I sat on the edge of the narrow bed and looked at my hands — the hands that had stitched Lilia's wound six hours ago, that had cleaned and closed and healed her with the same care I gave every patient — and I thought about how a story, once it has enough witnesses, stops being a story and becomes the truth.

I thought about the phone call in the dark.

I thought about how ready she had been.
