Chapter 5

I did not feel myself hit the water.

There was the wind, and the grey sky tilting, and then cold — a cold so absolute it was not a sensation but a fact, the way death is a fact, something that simply is and does not ask your permission. The Puget Sound closed over my head and the sound of the world cut off like a door slamming shut, and I sank.

I did not fight it.

Sable was somewhere below the cold, curled tight and silent, and the mate bond was still burning — even here, even underwater, even now — a thin wire of fire in my chest that connected me to a man standing on a cliff who had just watched me fall and turned away. I could feel him through it. Faint. Receding. The cold was eating the signal, or maybe he was walking back down the path already, his stride even and unhurried, the way it always was when he had finished a thing.

I let myself sink.

And then something bumped against my shoulder.

Small. Pale. Impossibly light.

The moonstone.

It had found me in the dark water, or I had found it — I could not tell which. It pressed against my arm with the gentle, insistent buoyancy of something that refused to go down, and some reflex older than grief, older than the bond, older than everything Declan had made of me and unmade — some animal reflex closed my arm around it.

I did not decide to hold on. My body decided.

Sable made a sound. Not a howl. Something smaller. A breath.

The current took us both.

---

I do not know how long I was in the water.

Long enough for the cold to stop hurting and become something else — a heaviness, a slowness, the feeling of being very far away from the body that was floating. I was aware of the moonstone against my ribs. I was aware of the sky above the surface, pale and featureless, visible in fragments when the swell lifted me. I was not aware of much else.

I did not hear him coming.

I only knew that the water changed — a displacement, a pressure wave, something large moving through it fast — and then hands were under me. Not gentle, not rough. Efficient. The hands of someone who had done this before, who knew exactly how to move an unconscious body through cold water without losing it.

He got an arm under my shoulders and one under my knees and he lifted me clear of the surface in one motion, and the cold air hit my face like a slap, and I heard myself make a sound — not a word, not a name, just a sound, the kind a body makes when it is surprised to still be making sounds.

"I have you," he said.

Two words. Low. Certain. The voice of a man who does not say things he does not mean.

I did not know who he was. I could not open my eyes. I held the moonstone against my chest with both arms — my ruined arms, my useless hands — and I let him carry me, because I had nothing left to spend on resistance.

Sable stirred. Just barely. A flicker of recognition, animal-deep, the kind that bypasses the mind entirely and goes straight to the marrow.

*Safe,* she said. The first word she had spoken since the courtyard.

Just that. Just the one word.

I let the dark take me.

---

Warmth came back in pieces.

A fire, somewhere to my left. Dry cloth against my skin — rough but clean, not the Omega grey, something else. The smell of pine resin and woodsmoke and something underneath that was neither, something that my wolf registered before I did: a scent that was not threatening. Not pack. Not rogue in the way rogues usually smelled, which was fear and anger and the particular sourness of a wolf cut off from belonging. This was something steadier. Something that had made its peace with being outside the system.

I opened my eyes.

Stone ceiling. A fire in a hearth built into the far wall. A single window, high up, showing a strip of dark sky.

A man sitting in a chair three feet from the bed, watching me with the patient stillness of someone who has been watching for a while and is prepared to watch longer.

He was large — not in the exaggerated way of wolves who trained for display, but in the way of something built for endurance. Dark hair, close-cropped. A scar that ran from his left collarbone up toward his shoulder, visible above the collar of his shirt. His eyes were grey, the particular grey of overcast water, and they were very calm.

I knew the scar.

I had closed that wound myself, five years ago, in the borderlands, with inadequate supplies and shaking hands and the absolute certainty that if anyone in the Ironveil Pack found out what I was doing, I would lose everything.

"Silas," I said. My voice came out wrong — thin, scraped raw.

"You remember me," he said. Not a question. Not surprise. Just a quiet acknowledgment, the way you acknowledge a fact.

"I remember the wound." I paused. "You found me."

"I felt you hit the water." He said it simply, without drama. "Lycan range. I was already moving before I understood why."

I looked at the ceiling for a moment. The fire crackled. Outside, somewhere distant, wind moved through trees.

"My hands," I said.

"Set. Splinted." He did not soften it. "It was rough work. You were hypothermic and I didn't have the right materials. But the bones are aligned. Whether the gift comes back—" He stopped.

"You don't know," I said.

"No."

I appreciated that. The honesty of it. I had spent five years surrounded by people who softened things, who hedged, who told me what they thought I needed to hear. This man sat in a chair three feet away and told me he did not know, and it was the most respectful thing anyone had said to me in longer than I could remember.

I looked down at my hands. Wrapped in clean cloth, splinted with what looked like stripped branches and strips of leather. They were the right shape again, more or less. They did not look like mine.

The moonstone was on the bed beside me. Someone had dried it and placed it within reach of my arm.

I looked at it for a long moment.

"Where are we?" I asked.

"The Ashlands," Silas said. "My territory. No one from Ironveil comes here." A pause. "No one from anywhere comes here without my permission."

I understood what he was telling me. I was not just rescued. I was somewhere I could not be followed. Somewhere the pack's reach did not extend, where the Alpha tone meant nothing and the Luna title — the stripped, discarded, worthless Luna title — was just a word.

Sable made that small sound again. Not a howl. Not yet. But something.

The mate bond was still there. Faint now, thin as a thread, burning low and distant like an ember that did not know it was supposed to go out. I could feel Declan through it — or the ghost of him, something confused and howling at a cliff's edge, something that did not understand what it had done.

I did not care what it understood.

"I'm not going back," I said.

Silas looked at me steadily. "I know," he said.

Outside, the wind moved through the pines, and the fire burned, and somewhere in the deep quiet of the Ashlands, I lay in a borrowed bed with my mother's moonstone beside me and my ruined hands wrapped in leather and stripped wood, and I thought: *she planned this before I ever walked into that medical wing.*

And then I thought: *she did not plan for this.*

Sable curled tighter inside me. Conserving warmth. Conserving herself.

Waiting.
