Chapter 3

The warriors flanked Emma, waiting for my nod to escort her from pack grounds. I stood tall, my Luna aura crackling with authority despite the pain tearing through my chest. The pack members watched in tense silence, their eyes darting between us.

"Marcus," I repeated, my voice steady. "Please remove our guest."

Emma's smile faltered, but before Marcus could act, Robert stepped forward. The movement was so sudden, so decisive, that I felt the collective shock ripple through the gathering.

"Stop," he commanded, his Alpha tone reverberating through the clearing.

I froze, disbelief washing over me as Robert positioned himself between Emma and the warriors. His Alpha aura exploded outward, suffocating and dominant—a direct challenge to my authority.

"Robert," I whispered, reaching for our bond. "What are you doing?"

He didn't look at me. His eyes remained fixed on Emma, dilated with primal need. "She stays."

The words hit me like physical blows. Through our mate bond, I felt his wolf surge forward, completely overriding his rational mind. The fated mate instinct had claimed him entirely.

"Alpha," Marcus began cautiously, "Luna Fiona gave an order—"

"I countermand it," Robert cut him off, his voice deeper than usual, his wolf pushing through. "No one touches her."

Emma's triumphant smile made my stomach turn. She stepped closer to Robert, her hand brushing his arm in a gesture that was both intimate and possessive.

"Thank you, Robert," she murmured, loud enough for everyone to hear. "I knew you would protect me."

I stood motionless as whispers erupted around us. The pack members' expressions ranged from shock to pity to calculation. In one moment, Robert had undermined my authority as Luna before our entire pack and visiting allies.

---

Three weeks later, I sat in my private study, watching Scarlet practice her diplomatic responses to various pack scenarios.

"If an Alpha challenges your father's decision," I explained, "you would respond with..."

"With respect for his position but firm adherence to our pack's policy," Scarlet recited perfectly. "And if he persists?"

"Then you would invoke the alliance treaty while subtly reminding him of our pack's military strength."

Scarlet nodded solemnly, her dark curls bouncing. "Like this: 'We value your alliance, Alpha, but perhaps you'd like to review section seven of our treaty before proceeding.'"

I smiled despite myself. "Exactly right."

A knock at the door interrupted us. Dr. Helena Rivers, our pack healer, entered with a concerned expression.

"Luna Fiona," she said quietly, "I need to speak with you about Emma's... integration."

I nodded, gesturing for her to continue while Scarlet pretended to focus on her studies—though I knew she was listening intently.

"She's been spending excessive time with Alpha Robert," Helena reported. "Using what appear to be manufactured emotional crises to keep him close."

"She cries?" I asked, already knowing the answer.

"Often. And always when she's alone with him."

I touched my Luna pendant, drawing strength from it. "And Robert?"

"Completely taken in," Helena confirmed with obvious disapproval. "His wolf responds to her scent without question."

I glanced at Scarlet, who had set down her books and was watching me with worried eyes. I needed to create a sanctuary for her away from Emma's toxicity.

"Scarlet," I said firmly, "I want you to continue your advanced political training with Marcus this afternoon."

"But what about—"

"This is important," I insisted. "The future of our pack depends on your understanding of these concepts."

---

The summer sun beat down on the pack house grounds as our annual gathering filled the gardens with laughter and conversation. I moved through the crowd, maintaining my Luna composure despite the whispers that followed me.

Scarlet stayed close to my side, her hand occasionally squeezing mine when she sensed my tension. We had created our own bubble of stability amid the chaos Emma had brought to our lives.

"I'm going to get some punch," Scarlet announced, pointing toward the refreshment table.

I nodded, watching as she weaved through the crowd. For a moment, I lost sight of her among the gathering pack members.

That's when I heard it—a splash, followed by gasps and shouts.

"Scarlet!" I cried out, pushing through the crowd toward the pool area.

I found her in the deep end, struggling to stay afloat despite her swimming lessons. Marcus dove in instantly, reaching her within seconds.

As I rushed to the edge of the pool, I caught a glimpse of Emma slipping away through the crowd, her expression a mixture of satisfaction and alarm.

"What happened?" I demanded as Marcus lifted Scarlet onto the poolside.

"I don't know," Scarlet coughed, water streaming from her hair. "Someone pushed me."

My eyes scanned the crowd until they locked with Emma's. For just a moment, her mask slipped, revealing the calculated malice beneath.

In that instant, I understood with perfect clarity: Emma had targeted Scarlet because she knew my daughter was the strongest emotional anchor keeping Robert tied to me.

And she wouldn't stop there.
