Chapter 1

The grand ballroom of the Crescent Moon Pack house glittered with crystal chandeliers and silver decorations. I smoothed down the front of my ceremonial white dress—the one I'd spent weeks selecting for this moment. Tonight was supposed to be everything I'd waited five years for.

"Luna Elowyn," I whispered to myself, practicing the title I'd soon bear. "Finally."

My wolf, Aria, stirred inside me. *We deserve this. We've earned this.*

I took a deep breath and stepped through the massive oak doors. The crowd parted as I entered, and I felt their eyes upon me—some sympathetic, others curious, a few even hopeful. Five years as Damien's fated mate without an official marking ceremony had left the pack unsettled. Tonight, that would finally change.

But as I made my way toward the high table where Damien sat in his Alpha throne, my steps faltered. Something was wrong.

Aviana Wheeler stood beside him.

She wore a flowing emerald gown that highlighted her curves, her golden hair cascading down her back in perfect waves. Her hand rested possessively on the back of Damien's chair, and her lips curved into a smile that didn't reach her eyes.

"Elowyn," Damien nodded, his expression unreadable. "You're late."

I swallowed hard, forcing myself to continue forward. "I apologize, Alpha. I wanted everything to be perfect."

Aviana's laugh tinkled like breaking glass. "Oh, it already is perfect."

The pack members shifted uncomfortably, their confusion evident. This wasn't how a Luna Presentation was supposed to begin.

"Damien," I whispered, using our mind-link. "What's happening? Why is she here?"

His response was cold, distant. *Be patient, Elowyn. All will be explained.*

Before I could respond, Aviana stepped forward and tapped on the microphone at the center of the high table.

"Attention, everyone," she announced, her voice dripping with false sweetness. "I have an exciting announcement to make."

The room fell silent. I froze, my heart pounding painfully against my ribs.

"As many of you know," Aviana continued, her eyes finding mine across the room, "Damien and I have been... close... for many years."

My stomach twisted. Close didn't begin to describe their relationship.

"And now," she placed her hand dramatically over her stomach, "I'm pleased to announce that I'm carrying Alpha Damien's heir!"

The room erupted in gasps and murmurs. My vision blurred, the edges darkening as if I might faint.

*No,* Aria growled inside me. *This can't be happening.*

I stumbled forward, my legs barely supporting me. "That's not possible," I said, my voice cracking. "Damien, tell them it's not true."

Damien's eyes flashed amber as his wolf surfaced. The air in the room thickened with his Alpha aura.

"Enough," he commanded, his Alpha tone vibrating through my bones.

My knees buckled instantly. The weight of his command crushed down on me, forcing me to the floor. Pain lanced through my chest as Aria fought against the compulsion.

"Don't cause a scene," Damien continued coldly, looking down at me from his throne. "Accept Aviana's new status."

The pack watched in horrified silence as their Alpha forced his fated mate to her knees. No one moved to help me. No one dared.

"Damien," I gasped, tears streaming down my face. "How could you?"

Aviana's laughter echoed through the hall. "Oh, darling. Did you really think he would choose you? After everything?"

Something inside me snapped. Five years of waiting, of enduring her "pranks," of being pushed aside and dismissed—it all crystallized into a single moment of clarity.

I reached for the nearest table and grabbed a glass of ceremonial wine—the one laced with wolfsbane meant to symbolize the bitter trials of love.

With strength I didn't know I possessed, I stood up despite Damien's command and threw the contents directly into Aviana's smug face.

She screamed as the wolfsbane burned her skin, but I barely heard it over the roaring in my ears.

"Elowyn!" Damien growled, his Alpha tone intensifying.

But something had changed inside me. The pain of his command was still there, but I could fight it now.

I turned to face him, my body trembling with the effort to remain standing.

"I've spent five years waiting for you to honor our bond," I said, my voice shaking but clear. "Five years enduring her cruelty while you looked the other way."

Damien stood, his aura pulsing dangerously. "You don't understand what's happening."

"I understand perfectly," I replied, stepping closer despite the agony of fighting his command. "And I'm done."

I took a deep breath, feeling Aria surge forward in support.

"I, Elowyn Hamilton," I began, the ancient rejection words rising to my lips as if I'd always known them, "reject you, Alpha Damien Morgan, as my fated mate."

The pain was immediate and overwhelming—like having my soul torn in half. But beneath it was something else: a fierce, liberating anger.

Without waiting for his response, I turned and fled the banquet hall, leaving behind the shattered remains of what should have been my future.
