Chapter 2

I woke to the steady drip of water somewhere in the darkness. My body felt like it had been torn apart and reassembled wrong, every muscle screaming in protest as I tried to move. The rejection of the mate bond had nearly killed me—perhaps it still would.

The room came into focus slowly: stone walls, a crackling fireplace, and luxurious furnishings that spoke of wealth and power. This was no Silver Moon Pack dwelling. The air itself felt different, charged with an ancient energy that made the hairs on my arms stand on end.

"She's awake," a deep voice announced from the shadows.

A tall figure stepped into the firelight. His uniform—black with silver insignia—marked him as Lycan Guard, the elite warriors who served only one master: Sebastian Blackwood, the Lycan Prince.

"I am Commander Valerius," he said, his expression betraying nothing as he assessed me. "You're under Prince Sebastian's protection now."

"Why?" My voice was a ragged whisper. "Why would he protect me?"

Valerius remained impassive. "That is not for me to say. But there are things you must know, Stella Morgan."

He knelt beside the bed, his aura so powerful that Luna whimpered inside me. "You've rejected your mate bond with Ryan Blackwood. Do you understand what that means?"

"Freedom," I whispered, clutching the moonstone pendant that somehow remained in my grasp.

"Death," he corrected, his voice softening slightly. "A spiritual death."

Ice slid down my spine as he continued. "The rejection of a mate bond triggers what we call the blood oath penalty. Your wolf—Luna, yes?—will begin to fade. Without intervention, she will disappear completely within thirty days. You will become wolfless again, permanently this time."

Luna howled in terror inside me, and I clutched at my chest. "No... there must be something..."

"Only Prince Sebastian's authority can shield you from this fate," Valerius said. "His Lycan bloodline grants him powers beyond those of ordinary Alphas. He has extended his protection to you, but the choice to accept it must be yours."

I stared at him, trying to process everything. "Why would he do this for me? I'm nothing to him."

Something flickered in Valerius's eyes—knowledge he couldn't share. "That is not my story to tell. But know this: Prince Sebastian does nothing without purpose."

A knock at the door interrupted us. Valerius straightened, his hand moving to the weapon at his side. "Enter," he commanded.

The door creaked open to reveal a familiar face that sent a jolt of pain through my heart. Mia Ashton—once my closest friend in the Silver Moon Pack—stood trembling in the doorway, her eyes darting nervously between Valerius and me.

"I... I have a message," she stammered, her usual confidence nowhere to be seen. "For Stella."

Valerius nodded once, and she stepped forward, keeping as much distance between us as the room allowed.

"Ryan sent me," she said, refusing to meet my gaze. "He says you must attend the Harvest Moon Ceremony tomorrow night. If you don't, he'll... he'll ensure Alpha Marcus declares you exiled from all pack territories."

The threat hung in the air between us. Exile was a death sentence for most wolves—no protection, no resources, hunted by rogues and humans alike.

"Is that all?" I asked, my voice steadier than I felt.

Mia finally looked at me, and I saw a flicker of the friend I'd once known. "Stella, please... just do what he asks. It's not too late to fix this."

"It was too late the moment he decided to betray me," I said. "You can tell Ryan I'll be there."

Relief washed over her face, quickly replaced by confusion when I added, "But not for the reasons he thinks."

After Mia left, Valerius studied me with newfound interest. "You understand that attending this ceremony puts you directly in their territory? Even my guards cannot fully protect you there."

"I understand," I said, rising from the bed despite my body's protests. "But I won't hide while they destroy what's left of me."

The next evening, I stood at the edge of the Shadowfang pack grounds, flanked by Valerius and two other Lycan Guards. Their presence caused a stir among the gathered wolves, but not as much as my arrival.

Every pair of eyes turned to me, filled with contempt, curiosity, or malicious glee. Whispers rippled through the crowd as I walked toward the grand bonfire circle at the center of the clearing, my head held high despite the weight of their judgment.

"Remember," Valerius murmured beside me, "you are under royal protection. They cannot touch you without facing Prince Sebastian's wrath."

I nodded, drawing strength from his words as we approached the fire. And there, on the other side of the flames, stood Ryan and Zoe, their hands intertwined, wearing matching expressions of triumph that faltered slightly at the sight of my Lycan escort.

The trap was set. But this time, I wasn't walking into it blindly.
