Chapter 3

The elevator to the penthouse level required a biometric scan. Darius placed his palm on the sleek black panel, and the steel doors slid open with a whisper. I stepped into a space that defied every cold, corporate expectation I had built in my mind. The entire top floor was a sanctuary—floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the rain-soaked Manhattan skyline, warm amber lighting that felt like a perpetual sunset, and furniture that whispered of old money and older power.

But I barely noticed the opulence. My entire focus locked onto the silver-haired man rising from a leather armchair near the fireplace.

Russell Peterson moved with the careful grace of someone who had survived decades of ruthless warfare, yet his eyes—those kind, impossibly familiar eyes—filled with unshed tears the moment they met mine.

"Kendra," he breathed, his voice cracking on my name.

I couldn't speak. My throat had closed completely. He crossed the distance between us in three long strides and pulled me into his arms with a tenderness that shattered every remaining wall inside me. I collapsed against his chest, ten years of grief pouring out in violent, ugly sobs that I couldn't control.

"My little bird," he murmured into my hair, his own tears falling freely. "You're home. You're finally home."

When I could finally breathe again, Russell guided me down a private hallway. He stopped before a white door with delicate gold filigree. "I never changed a single thing," he said softly, turning the handle.

The bedroom was a time capsule. Pale lavender walls, shelves lined with worn children's books, a window seat piled with faded cushions. On the nightstand sat a wooden puzzle box—the exact one from my fragmented memory. I picked it up with trembling hands, my fingers instinctively finding the hidden mechanism. It clicked open, revealing a tiny silver locket inside.

Russell lifted a large, framed portrait from where it leaned against the wall. He turned it toward me, and my knees nearly buckled. The woman in the painting had my face—or rather, I had hers. The same striking eyes, the same delicate jaw, but her smile held a confidence I was only beginning to discover.

"Your mother," Russell said, his voice thick. "Evangeline. You have her strength, Kendra. And now, you have her legacy."

The memories crashed over me in a complete, devastating wave. Sunday mornings in this very room. Three teenage boys teaching me chess. Russell calling me his heir, his little bird who would one day command the wind itself. The kidnapping hadn't just stolen my sight—it had stolen my entire identity.

I pressed my palm against the portrait's gilded frame. "I remember," I whispered. "I remember everything."

Dr. Elena Rodriguez arrived an hour later, her medical bag in hand and her expression professionally neutral. But when she entered the private medical suite within the penthouse and saw Abner's meticulously organized files spread across the examination table, her composure cracked.

"These are Kendra's medical records from the King estate," Abner explained, his analytical voice edged with barely controlled fury. "Procured through our channels."

Dr. Rodriguez pulled on latex gloves and began reading. Her jaw tightened with each page. Finally, she looked up at me, her dark eyes blazing. "Kendra, there were at least four separate ophthalmologists who recommended cornea transplant candidacy evaluations starting six years ago. Every single referral was blocked by Bentley King, citing 'emotional unreadiness' and 'psychological fragility.'"

The words hit like physical blows. I gripped the edge of the examination table, my newly restored vision blurring with rage-filled tears. "He kept me blind on purpose."

"He kept you dependent," Darius corrected from his position near the door, his voice a lethal whisper. "Controllable. Useful."

Dr. Rodriguez removed her gloves with sharp, angry movements. "If I had seen these records earlier, if I had known the deliberate medical neglect—" She stopped, composing herself. "You're healthy now, Kendra. And you're free. That's what matters."

But freedom wasn't enough. Not anymore.

---

The war room was all black marble and ruthless efficiency. I sat at the head of a obsidian conference table, flanked by Abner and three stone-faced forensic accountants whose fingers flew across holographic financial displays.

"Here," one of them said, isolating a transaction thread. "January 2020. A forged signature authorized a wire transfer of $2.3 million to an offshore account in the Cayman Islands. The account is registered to a shell corporation—but the beneficial owner is Adelina Foster."

Abner pulled up another screen. "This pattern repeats sixty-seven times over the past decade. Jewelry, luxury apartments, a villa in Tuscany—all purchased with your money, Kendra. Bentley used a medical power of attorney, granted when you were seventeen and still traumatized, to gain complete control of your accounts."

I stared at the cascading numbers, each one a knife twisting deeper into the wound. "How much total?"

The lead accountant met my eyes. "$47 million. Conservatively."

The room fell silent except for the hum of the holographic displays. I traced the edge of the table, my mind crystallizing into something cold and diamond-hard.

"I want every transaction documented," I said, my voice steady and unfamiliar to my own ears. "Every forged signature. Every lie. Prepare a full legal brief."

Abner allowed himself a small, approving smile. "And then?"

I looked up, meeting Darius's intense gaze across the room. The man who had searched for me for a decade. The man whose suit jacket still smelled of cedar and unspoken protection.

"Then we destroy them," I said simply. "Completely."

Darius's expression didn't change, but his platinum ring caught the light as he turned it once on his finger—a gesture of deep satisfaction.

"Welcome home, Kendra," he murmured. "The Zephyr Syndicate has been waiting for you."
