Chapter 5

The private boutique on Madison Avenue had been closed for three hours when Darius's SUV pulled up to the unmarked entrance. No signs. No window displays. Just a single brass buzzer and a security camera that recognized his face before his finger reached the button.

I stepped out onto the rain-slicked pavement, still wearing the borrowed cashmere sweater and jeans that Miller had procured for me. The plate glass door swung open, revealing a tall woman with silver-streaked hair and the assessing gaze of someone who dressed empresses.

"Mademoiselle Peterson," she said, the French accent wrapping around my real name like silk. "We have been waiting for you."

Darius's hand settled on the small of my back—a touch so brief it might have been accidental, except for the way heat bloomed through the cashmere. "Take your time," he murmured. "I'll be right here."

The boutique's interior was all cream marble and strategic lighting that made every garment look like wearable armor. The designer pulled piece after piece—sharp-shouldered blazers in charcoal and midnight blue, silk blouses that draped like water, tailored trousers that transformed my legs into weapons.

But it was the final outfit that made my reflection unrecognizable.

The suit was black, perfectly structured, with a subtle sheen that caught light like oil on water. The jacket nipped at my waist before flaring slightly at my hips. The trousers broke exactly at the ankle of the four-inch Louboutin heels. My hair, professionally blown out for the first time in a decade, fell in dark waves past my shoulders.

I stepped out of the dressing room. Darius had been examining his phone, but his head snapped up at the sound of my heels on marble. The phone slipped from his fingers.

For three full seconds, he just stared. His jaw went tight. His dark eyes traced from my heels up the clean lines of the suit to my face, and something dangerous and hungry flickered in their depths before he locked it down behind that impenetrable control.

"Kendra," he said, his voice rougher than I'd ever heard it. He cleared his throat, straightening. "You look—"

"Powerful," the designer finished, appearing with a leather jewelry box. "Now, the final touch."

She lifted out a necklace that made my breath catch. A single diamond the size of my thumbnail, cut in a teardrop shape, suspended on a platinum chain so delicate it was nearly invisible. The stone caught the light and threw it back in sharp, cold fragments.

"The Zephyr Star," Darius said quietly, taking the necklace from the designer's hands. "It belonged to your mother."

My hand moved instinctively to my throat, to the space where my old, simple pendant used to rest—the only thing Bentley had allowed me to keep. The gesture was automatic, a phantom comfort that no longer existed.

Darius stepped behind me. I felt the whisper of his breath on my neck as he fastened the clasp. His fingers brushed the sensitive skin below my hairline, and I had to lock my knees to stay upright.

"Perfect," he murmured, his reflection meeting mine in the mirror. For just a moment, his mask slipped completely. The way he looked at me—like I was the answer to a question he'd been asking for ten years—made my heart hammer against my ribs.

I touched the diamond, feeling its cool weight settle against my collarbone. The woman in the mirror wasn't Bentley's grateful, dependent ward. She was Russell Peterson's granddaughter. The Zephyr heiress. A force that could level empires.

"Thank you," I said, turning to face him. "For finding me."

Darius's expression softened into something that looked almost like pain. "I never stopped looking," he said simply.

Adelina Foster's black American Express card had never been declined. Not once in seven years of secret luxury funded by my stolen trust funds. So when the Chanel boutique manager handed it back to her with an apologetic smile and the word "insufficient," Adelina's perfectly made-up face went white, then red.

"Run it again," she demanded, her affected sophistication cracking like cheap veneer.

The manager swiped it three more times. Each beep of rejection was a small, satisfying death. Security footage that Abner would show me later captured Adelina's complete meltdown—the screaming, the hurled handbag, the threats to call Bentley and have everyone fired.

But Bentley wasn't answering his phone.

She stormed into the King estate two hours later, her heels leaving angry marks on the imported Italian marble. Bentley was in his study, surrounded by financial reports that painted his empire's death in red ink. His usually perfect hair stood in peaks where he'd been running his hands through it. His expensive watch hung loose on his wrist—he'd lost weight in just three days.

"Fix it!" Adelina shrieked, slamming the declined card on his desk. "I was humiliated in front of everyone!"

Bentley's head snapped up, his eyes bloodshot and wild. "Humiliated?" he repeated, his voice dangerously quiet. "You were humiliated?"

"Yes! The card you gave me—"

"Is connected to accounts that no longer exist!" Bentley exploded, surging to his feet. Papers scattered like frightened birds. "Everything is gone, Adelina! The credit lines, the investors, the shipping contracts—it's all disappearing, and I don't know why!"

Adelina stepped back, her eyes widening. This wasn't the smooth, confident Bentley who had promised her the world. This was a cornered animal.

"Well, fix it," she said, but her voice had lost its sharp edge. "You're Bentley King. You—"

"I'm nothing!" he roared. "Don't you understand? Someone is destroying us, and I can't stop it!"

The study door opened. Victoria King stood in the threshold, her face carved from ice. "Bentley," she said quietly. "Your investigator is here."

---

The private investigator was ex-CIA, the kind of man who found people who didn't want to be found and uncovered secrets that were meant to stay buried. He placed a black folder on Bentley's desk with the careful reverence of someone handling a live bomb.

"You're not going to like this," he said.

Bentley's hands shook as he opened it. The first page was a corporate structure chart—a vast, terrifying web with "The Zephyr Syndicate" at its center, tentacles reaching into every major industry, every government, every shadow.

The second page was a photograph taken two days ago. A woman in a black power suit and four-inch heels, stepping out of a Madison Avenue boutique. A massive diamond caught the camera flash at her throat. Her face was tilted up, confident and coldly beautiful.

Kendra.

Bentley's vision tunneled. The photograph slipped from his numb fingers.

"Kendra Peterson," the investigator continued, his voice flat and professional, "is the sole blood heir and newly instated head of The Zephyr Syndicate. Net worth estimated at $47 billion. She returned to the organization three days ago—the same day you left her at the altar."

The room spun. Bentley gripped the edge of his desk, his knuckles bone-white.

"The blind charity case," Victoria whispered, her face ashen. "The girl we used as a shield..."

"Wasn't blind," the investigator finished. "And she definitely wasn't a charity case."

Bentley's phone buzzed. Another text from that unknown number: *Did you really think I wouldn't remember, Bentley? The storm has arrived. —K.P.*

His expensive watch slipped off his wrist and shattered on the marble floor.
