Chapter 2

Nikolai's apartment was exactly what I expected and nothing like what I remembered.

I stood in the elevator on the way up, watching the floor numbers climb, and told myself I was fine. I was fine. This was a business meeting. The man waiting for me was a lawyer I happened to have a history with, and that history was irrelevant.

The doors opened directly into his foyer.

No art on the walls. No personal photographs. Just clean lines, expensive materials, and the kind of deliberate emptiness that takes effort to maintain. A city stretched behind floor-to-ceiling windows — the Upper East Side laid out like a circuit board, all light and geometry. The apartment didn't look lived in. It looked controlled.

Nikolai was standing at the kitchen island when I walked in, two glasses of water already poured. He was in a dark shirt, sleeves rolled to the forearm, and he looked at me the way he always had — like he was reading something I hadn't finished writing yet.

"You're on time," he said.

"I'm always on time."

"I know."

We sat at his dining table, which was already covered in papers. He didn't offer small talk and I didn't want any. He slid a legal pad toward me and started talking.

New York was an equitable distribution state, he explained. Not community property. A judge would divide marital assets based on what was "fair," which meant adultery alone — even documented adultery — carried limited financial weight. Judges had seen it all. Cheating was ugly, but it wasn't automatically a settlement.

Financial fraud was different.

"If Elliott has been moving money out of joint accounts into a private account," Nikolai said, "that's dissipation of marital assets. That's actionable. That's the kind of thing that makes a judge angry."

"I know what dissipation means."

"Then you know why we need documentation before you do anything else." He held my gaze. "No confrontations. No letting him know you're aware. Not yet."

Something in his tone made my jaw tighten. "I wasn't planning to walk in and start screaming, Nikolai."

"I didn't say you were."

"You implied it."

"I implied that emotion has a way of accelerating timelines that aren't ready to be accelerated." He picked up his pen. "I've seen it happen to smarter people than Elliott."

I stared at him. "Are you calling me emotional?"

"I'm calling you human." He said it without inflection, without apology. "Which is not a flaw. It's just a variable I'm accounting for."

I wanted to argue. I didn't, because he wasn't wrong, and we both knew it, and that was somehow worse than if he'd been condescending about it.

We spent the next hour going through the mechanics. Bank records. Screen-mirroring software for Elliott's tablet, which I had access to through our shared cloud account. A small recording device — legal in New York under one-party consent — that I could place in the apartment. Nikolai walked me through each step with the same flat precision he probably used in depositions, and I took notes and asked questions and did not once let myself think about the fact that I was sitting three feet from the only person who had ever made me feel genuinely safe.

When we were done, he walked me to the elevator.

"This will take time," he said. "Weeks, maybe more. You'll need to keep acting normal."

"I've been acting normal for three years," I said. "I'm very good at it."

The elevator doors opened. I stepped in and turned around. He was watching me with that same unreadable expression, and for one unguarded second I thought I saw something move behind it — something old and tired and careful.

The doors closed before either of us said anything else.

---

I got home at nine-thirty. Elliott was on the couch with a glass of wine and a cooking show on low, the picture of a man at ease in his own life. He looked up when I came in and smiled — warm, practiced, perfect.

"Long day?"

"Dinner with a client," I said. "Don't wait up."

I went to the bedroom, changed into sweats, and waited until I heard him move to the kitchen. Then I opened my laptop.

Three years of joint account statements. I'd always had access. I'd just never looked — not really, not the way I was looking now. Elliott handled the household finances. He'd offered, early in the marriage, and I'd let him because I was busy and he seemed to enjoy it and it felt like partnership.

I understood now what it actually was.

I started with the most recent statements and worked backward. At first, nothing jumped out. Regular deposits, regular expenses, the ordinary financial texture of a shared life. But Nikolai had told me what to look for, and around the fourteen-month mark, I found it.

Small transfers. Two hundred here, three-fifty there. Never round numbers — that was deliberate, I realized. Round numbers triggered pattern recognition. These were designed to look like fees, subscriptions, minor expenses. The kind of thing you'd scroll past without stopping.

I stopped.

I opened a spreadsheet and started entering figures. The clock on the nightstand read 11:15. Then midnight. Then 2 AM. I got up, made coffee, came back. The numbers kept adding up.

By 4 AM, I had eighteen months of transfers mapped out. The total sat at the bottom of my spreadsheet in clean black digits.

$214,000.

I stared at it for a long time. The apartment was completely quiet. Somewhere down the hall, Elliott was asleep in the guest room — he'd started sleeping there two months ago, citing my "restlessness," and I'd been relieved without examining why.

I closed the laptop.

I stood at the kitchen counter with my coffee going cold in my hands, and I didn't think about Elliott. I didn't think about the money, or the woman in my bedroom, or the three years of elaborate dinners and curated photographs and careful, hollow tenderness.

I thought about the fact that I had almost missed it.

That was the part that sat in my chest like a stone. Not the betrayal — I could metabolize betrayal. I'd done it before. What I couldn't shake was the architecture of it. The patience. The precision. Someone had looked at me and thought: she's smart, so we'll make it small. She's busy, so we'll make it easy to overlook. She trusts him, so we'll use that.

They had built a lie specifically fitted to my blind spots.

I rinsed my mug, set it in the rack, and went back to the bedroom. I didn't sleep. I lay in the dark and stared at the ceiling and thought about Nikolai's voice saying *I've been waiting for you to call* — not surprised, just waiting — and I wondered how long he'd known, and what it had cost him to stay quiet, and whether any of that mattered now.

It didn't. It couldn't.

What mattered was the spreadsheet. What mattered was the next step.

I picked up my phone and sent Nikolai a single text: *Found 18 months. $214K. I have everything.*

The reply came back in under a minute, even at 4 AM.

*Good. Don't touch it. We move carefully.*

I set the phone face-down on the nightstand.

Outside, Brooklyn was starting its slow, gray crawl toward morning. A bus rumbled past. Someone's dog barked twice and went quiet. The world kept moving, indifferent and ordinary, and I lay there in the dark feeling something shift inside me — not anger, not grief, but something colder and more useful.

Clarity.

I had been designed to miss it. I hadn't missed it.

That was enough, for now.
