Chapter 3

Bianca called on a Tuesday morning, just after nine.

I was at the kitchen table with my coffee and Biscuit at my feet when my phone lit up with her name. I let it ring once before I answered.

'Kenzie.' Her voice was high and breathless, the way it got when she had something she'd been sitting on. 'I need to tell you something.'

'Tell me,' I said.

She was pregnant. Eight weeks. The clinic had confirmed it two days ago, and she'd been dying—her word, dying—to tell someone. She talked fast, tumbling from one sentence into the next. How she'd suspected for two weeks. How she'd taken three tests in her bathroom with the door locked. How this changed everything, how the timing was actually perfect, how Kason had mentioned just last month that he was thinking about the future and how she was going to use this dinner she had planned—the one at his favorite restaurant, with the candles and the wine she'd pretend to sip—to let it come up naturally.

I listened to every word.

'I haven't told him yet,' she said. 'Obviously. I want it to be right. I want him to feel like this is something we're walking into together.'

'Of course,' I said. 'That's the right instinct.'

She exhaled. 'God. I'm so glad I have you. You always know exactly what to say.'

I smiled. She couldn't see it. 'You're going to be fine,' I told her. 'This is going to work out exactly the way it's supposed to.'

After we hung up, I sat for a long time without moving. Biscuit rested his chin on my foot. The coffee went cold. Outside, a taxi honked twice and went quiet.

I touched Lily's bracelet.

Then I opened the laptop.

Date. Week of gestation. Clinic name. The restaurant she'd mentioned for the dinner with Kason. The exact phrasing she'd used: walking into together. I logged everything, closed the file, and sat back.

Eight weeks.

---

The rumor took four days to reach Bianca.

I had two points of entry. The first was a gallery owner named Phillip—a lean, well-connected man who drank with Ephraim on Thursday nights at a wood-paneled bar in the West Village and who repeated things with the unconscious precision of someone who thought gossip was just conversation. The second was a woman named Dana, who ran in Bianca's charity circuit and had the particular talent of making everything she said sound like a confidence.

I didn't say anything to either of them directly. I didn't need to. I simply let it be known, in two separate conversations over two separate glasses of wine, that someone had seen Ephraim at a downtown hotel bar—the Marlowe, specifically, Tuesday evening—with a woman. Young. Attentive. The kind of thing you notice.

I expressed mild, practiced uncertainty. 'I'm sure it was nothing. He has clients everywhere.' I let that sit just long enough. 'I just thought it was strange he didn't mention it.'

Phillip and Dana were diligent people.

By Friday, the whisper was in motion.

I saw it land at the charity luncheon on Saturday afternoon. Bianca was across the room, standing with a cluster of women near the bar, when Dana leaned in close and said something that lasted about fifteen seconds. I wasn't watching Bianca's face—I was watching her champagne glass. It stopped, halfway to her lips, and held there. Then her eyes went down, to her phone on the table.

She didn't drink the champagne for another full minute.

I turned back to the woman I was speaking with and made some remark about the centerpieces. The woman laughed. I laughed too.

---

The hotel was called the Carmichael. Dark wood and brass fixtures, a dining room at the back that offered private booths with drawn curtains. Ephraim had a standing relationship with the bar manager. I had used that fact precisely once before, in a different context, for a different purpose.

I booked the private dining room under a corporate account I'd set up eighteen months ago. Then, through Phillip, I let it circulate—lightly, almost accidentally—that Ephraim had a reservation there. Wednesday evening. Private room. Just him and whoever he'd been seen with.

I didn't know what Bianca would do with that information.

I had an idea.

Ephraim left the house at six-forty, telling me he had a dinner with a client. I said drive safe and handed him his jacket. He kissed me on the cheek, briefly, already distracted. After the front door closed, I sat on the floor in the hallway with my back against the wall and Biscuit pressing his warm weight into my side.

I checked my phone once at seven-twelve. Nothing.

At seven-twenty-eight, Ephraim's texts to Bianca began.

The first one read: *where are you*

The next four came in rapid succession. I only knew their volume from the timestamps I'd access later. But I knew the shape of what had happened before any of it hit the screen, because it was the shape I had drawn.

Bianca—eight weeks pregnant, freshly arrived at the Carmichael, burning with the particular rage of a woman who has decided she is owed something—had walked into the lobby and found Ephraim. No second woman. No dinner companion. Just him, confused, and four people near the bar who watched the whole thing unfold.

She had screamed. The word I would hear later, from two separate people who had been there, was *screamed*.

The clinic confirmed the threatened miscarriage two hours later.

Ephraim's texts to her did not stop until nearly midnight.

I stayed on the floor with Biscuit until Biscuit decided it was time to move, and then I let him lead me to the kitchen, where I fed him his dinner and washed the single mug in the sink and dried my hands on the dish towel that still smelled faintly of the lavender soap Lily used to use when she helped me with the dishes.

I stood at the sink for a moment.

Then I went to the laptop, opened the file, and typed the time the texts began.
