Chapter 5

The morning sun filtered through the blinds of Cooper's safe house as I stared at my laptop screen, my fingers hovering over the keyboard. Three weeks had passed since I'd lost my twins. Three weeks of planning, of healing, of transforming my grief into something lethal.

"Got her," Cooper's voice crackled through my earpiece. "She just entered the clinic on Maple Street."

I switched screens to the traffic camera feed Cooper had hacked. "That's not a regular medical facility."

"No," he agreed. "It's a cash-only place. No records, no questions."

I watched through Cooper's surveillance as Miley slipped into the building, glancing nervously over her shoulder. Even from the grainy footage, I could see the slight bulge beneath her designer dress—too perfect, too symmetrical.

"Moving to audio," Cooper whispered.

His long-range microphone picked up her voice with crystal clarity as she entered what appeared to be an examination room.

"I need to adjust the prosthetic," Miley was saying, her voice petulant. "It's rubbing against my ribs."

A man's voice responded, "You're lucky I was able to create something so realistic on such short notice, Ms. Arnold."

"Realistic isn't enough," Miley snapped. "It needs to be perfect. Valentino's been... suspicious lately."

I leaned closer to the screen, my heart pounding.

"He's been hearing things at night," she continued. "Some kind of howling sound. It's making him paranoid."

I suppressed a smile. The arctic wind recordings were working.

"Where's my next set of ultrasound images?" Miley demanded. "He's going to want to see them soon."

"Here," the doctor replied. "But remember our arrangement. This is the last time."

"Don't worry," Miley laughed, the sound like breaking glass. "Once the IPO launches and we're married, I won't need them anymore."

Cooper's camera captured everything—Miley examining the fake ultrasound prints, the doctor's nervous glance at the door, and most damning of all, Miley removing the prosthetic pregnancy bump and tossing it carelessly into her car's trunk.

"Got it," Cooper murmured. "Recording secure."

---

The next phase required precision timing.

I compiled three separate dossiers, each tailored to one of the most influential board members—Jonathan Sterling, Elena Ramirez, and Thomas Chen. Each contained identical evidence of Miley's embezzlement: bank transfers to her personal PR team disguised as "strategic consulting fees," receipts for luxury items purchased with company funds, and most damning, emails discussing how to manipulate stock prices before the IPO.

But I deliberately omitted any mention of her fake pregnancy.

"Just enough to plant seeds of doubt," I explained to Cooper as he prepared to deliver the packages. "Not enough to force their hand."

"Why not expose her completely?" he asked.

"Because they need to discover it themselves," I replied, adjusting the final dossier. "If they learn the truth from us, they'll question the source. If they uncover it through their own investigation, they'll believe it completely."

Cooper nodded, understanding the psychological warfare at play.

That evening, from my secure location, I watched through hacked security feeds as Jonathan Sterling summoned Elena and Thomas to his private office. Their faces were grim as they spread my documents across the conference table.

"The numbers don't lie," Jonathan was saying. "She's been siphoning operational funds for months."

"This calls into question everything about her leadership capabilities," Elena replied, her voice tight with anger.

Thomas leaned forward. "The IPO is in three days. We can't afford a scandal."

"We also can't afford a fraud running half the company," Jonathan countered. "I want a full audit—quietly."

I switched off the feed, satisfaction coursing through me like electricity. The board was fracturing exactly as planned.

---

The invitation arrived in a black envelope delivered by a courier service that couldn't be traced. Inside was a single card of heavy cream stock:

*Aegis Defense Initial Public Offering Launch Gala*

*Friday, 8:00 PM*

*Rainier Grand Ballroom*

At the bottom, a handwritten note in elegant script:

*The true owner will attend.*

I ran my finger over the words, imagining Valentino's reaction when he received it.

"Are you sure about this?" Cooper asked, watching me seal the envelope.

"I've never been more certain," I replied.

The gala would be the culmination of everything—the public unveiling of Aegis Defense as a publicly traded company, Valentino's announcement of his marriage to Miley, and her promotion to Co-CEO.

It would also be their downfall.

I pictured Valentino's face when he received my message—his hands shaking, his mind racing with possibilities. Was it a threat? A prank? Or something far more dangerous?

The tiger was ready to strike.

As I slipped into the custom gown I'd commissioned—a creation of black silk and silver armor-like detailing—I caught my reflection in the mirror. The woman staring back was no longer the broken, betrayed wife who had bled on a cold concrete floor.

She was vengeance personified.

"It's time," I said to Cooper as he helped me with the final adjustments.

"Time for what?" he asked.

I smiled coldly. "Time to claim what's mine."
