Chapter 1

The glass walls of the conference room reflected my smile as I closed my laptop. Ten million dollars. The largest contract in the company's history, and I had secured it single-handedly after weeks of negotiations. My heart raced with pride as I looked up, expecting—what? Applause? Recognition? Something more than the tepid response that greeted me.

"Good job, Sarah," muttered Daniel from accounting, his eyes already back on his phone.

A few others offered halfhearted claps that died quickly in the sterile air. I sought out Ryan's eyes—my husband, my boss—at the head of the table. He gave me a distracted nod, already scrolling through his own device.

"That concludes our meeting," he announced, standing abruptly. "Everyone back to work."

I gathered my materials slowly, watching as the others filed out. Six years of marriage, six years of helping Ryan build this company from nothing, and this was what my greatest achievement earned me—a nod and dismissal.

As I stepped into the hallway, I caught sight of Chloe hovering outside Ryan's office door. Her silk blouse was unbuttoned one button too many, her smile radiant as she clutched a folder to her chest. Ryan's new assistant of three months looked nothing like the serious professional she'd presented herself as during the interview I'd conducted.

"Those quarterly projections can wait until tomorrow," I said, approaching her with what I hoped was a pleasant smile.

"Oh, but Boss specifically asked for them tonight," Chloe replied, her voice honeyed with false sweetness. Her eyes flicked over my simple blazer and pencil skirt—practical clothes I'd chosen when we were still watching every penny. "He said it's urgent."

Ryan emerged from the conference room, his eyes lighting up when he saw her. "Chloe! Perfect timing."

He barely glanced my way as he ushered her into his office, closing the door with a soft click that somehow felt louder than a slam.

I straightened the pens on my desk, lining them up with mathematical precision. A habit from childhood that resurfaced whenever I felt control slipping away.

---

That evening, I prepared Ryan's favorite meal—pan-seared salmon with roasted vegetables. I'd stopped at the wine shop for a bottle of the Pinot Noir we'd splurged on when we signed our first major client. Tonight deserved celebration. Ten million dollars meant security, expansion, maybe even that vacation we'd been postponing for years.

Ryan arrived home an hour late, loosening his tie as he dropped his keys in the bowl by the door.

"Something smells good," he said, kissing my cheek absently.

"I thought we could celebrate," I replied, pouring him a glass of wine. "The Northstar contract is a game-changer for us."

"Right, right." He reached into his pocket. "Actually, I got you something today."

My heart lifted. Perhaps he had been planning a surprise all along. I watched as he pulled out a small object and placed it in my palm.

It was a ring—crudely woven from what looked like dried grass or reeds.

"I passed a street vendor on the way to lunch," Ryan explained, already reaching for his wine. "Thought it was quirky. More meaningful than anything bought, right?"

I stared at the rough circle, fighting to keep my expression neutral. "It's... unique."

"Exactly." He smiled, pleased with himself, then his phone chimed. He glanced down, and I caught Chloe's name illuminated on the screen before he quickly turned it over.

"Work never stops," he muttered, taking a large swallow of wine.

Later that night, unable to sleep, I scrolled through Instagram. Our company page had been updated with photos from the day. There was Chloe, her arm extended toward the camera, showcasing not one but three gleaming Tiffany rings. The caption read: "Thank you, Boss, for recognizing my first month's work! #blessed #bestbossever"

I zoomed in on the timestamp in the corner of one photo. The rings had been purchased the same afternoon Ryan had bought me a weed twisted into a circle.

My finger hovered over the screen, a cold knot forming in my stomach. For the first time in six years, I allowed myself to see the truth I'd been avoiding: I was invisible to the man I'd given everything to.

And someone else was becoming very visible indeed.

Her stepmother mocked her cheap clothes, and her half-brother called her a piece of trash. Her father tossed a vocational school enrollment form at her, telling her to learn to sew so they could marry her off to anyone desperate enough. Her perfect, porcelain-doll stepsister Gwyneth even deliberately smashed a glass of boiling milk against her own leg. "Why did you push me?!" Gwyneth screamed, crying tears of fake terror to frame Allison. "You vicious bitch! You're just as sick as your mother!" her father roared, raising his hand to strike her. They looked at her with absolute disgust, thinking she was just a stupid, uncultured hick they could easily manipulate and destroy. They had no idea that the girl standing before them was a lethal operative who already possessed all their offshore tax ledgers and darkest secrets. Allison easily caught her father's wrist mid-air, her grip like a steel vice. "I'm not going to a trade school," she whispered coldly, ripping the form into pieces. "I am going to Crestwood Academy." It was time to take back everything that belonged to her, with interest.
