Chapter 3

I knew Vivienne would regroup. Women like her don't absorb a loss — they file it away and come back with a different angle.

She took about four days. I'll admit, I expected three.

Rosalie Kelley arrived at the pack house on a Thursday evening, during one of those casual dinner gatherings that Vivienne hosts under the pretense of pack community and uses for something else entirely. I'd been watching the guest list since Tuesday. The name didn't mean anything to me at first — young, Omega-ranked, no family connections worth noting. Then Rosalie came through the front door and I understood immediately.

She had a particular scent. Soft and a little sweet, with something underneath it that I couldn't name but that made the air in the room shift in a way I recognized. Not because of me. Because of Damian.

His jaw tightened. Just slightly. Just for a second. He covered it well — he always does — but I've spent enough time studying Damian Ford to read the things he doesn't say out loud.

I looked at Vivienne. She was already looking at me.

There it was.

The room was doing what rooms do in these situations — pretending not to watch while watching everything. I could feel it, that particular collective attention that passes for casual conversation at pack dinners. Forks moving. Glasses lifted. Eyes that weren't quite meeting mine.

Vivienne guided Rosalie toward the head of the table with a hand at her back and a warmth in her voice I had never once heard her direct at me. "Rosalie, you must sit near Damian — he's been meaning to meet more of the younger pack members. It's so important for an Alpha to stay connected to his people."

Smooth. I'd give her that.

Rosalie herself looked like she'd rather be anywhere else on earth. She was young — early twenties, maybe — with the particular stillness of someone who has spent a long time making herself small in rooms full of ranked wolves. Her eyes moved to me once, quickly, and then away. Not hostile. Scared.

I set down my wine glass.

The table was watching. Sutton, two seats down from Vivienne, had arranged her expression into something that was almost sympathy and was actually anticipation. She wanted the crack. They all did — the proof that the Omega's composure was performance, that underneath the sharp tongue and the borrowed authority was a woman who could be rattled by a pretty face and a familiar scent.

I stood up.

I walked around the table, unhurried, the way I move through every room I've decided belongs to me. I stopped beside Rosalie before Vivienne could finish settling her into the chair, and I smiled — not the smile I use on Vivienne, the one with no warmth in it. A different one. Genuine enough to be disarming.

"Rosalie," I said. "I've been looking for a personal attendant. Someone sharp, someone I can actually trust with my schedule." I tilted my head slightly. "Whatever Vivienne promised you for tonight, I'll double it. Ongoing. Full benefits, private quarters in the east wing, and you answer to me and no one else."

The silence was immediate and total.

Rosalie stared at me. Her mouth opened slightly. I watched her process it — the offer, the implication, the fact that a ranked wolf was asking rather than telling, which I suspected had not happened to her very often.

I kept my eyes on her and nowhere else. Not on Vivienne. Not on Damian. Not on Sutton's carefully composed face.

Rosalie swallowed. "I — yes," she said. "Yes, I accept."

"Wonderful." I pulled out the chair beside me — not the one Vivienne had been steering her toward — and gestured to it. "Sit with me."

She sat.

I returned to my own seat and picked up my wine glass and took a sip, and I did not look at Vivienne until I was ready to. When I did, her expression was exactly what I expected: composed, still, and behind the stillness, something recalculating at speed.

Sutton was looking at her plate.

Across the table, Damian watched me with an expression I couldn't fully read — something between amusement and a sharper thing underneath it, something that wasn't quite settled. He reached for his own glass and said nothing. He didn't need to.

The dinner continued. The room exhaled and rearranged itself around the new reality, the way rooms do.

---

Rosalie was quiet for the first few days. She showed up on time, did what I asked, and kept her eyes open in the way of someone who has learned that observation is safer than participation. I didn't push her. I've been the new person in a room full of ranked wolves. I know what that costs.

By the end of the first week, she started talking.

Not about herself — not yet. About the pack house. Small things at first. Which enforcer rotated off the east corridor on Tuesday nights. Which ranked wolves had been meeting privately with Vivienne in the sitting room off the main hall, and roughly how long those meetings ran. The name of the Beta's wife who had been making pointed comments about Omega bloodlines at the last two ranked-family gatherings.

She delivered these observations carefully, like she wasn't sure they were welcome. Like she expected me to tell her it wasn't her place.

I listened to all of it. Then I said, "You notice things."

She looked at me sideways. "Is that a problem?"

"It's the opposite of a problem."

Something in her shoulders dropped about half an inch. Not much. But I noticed.

We were in my office — the one I'd claimed on the second floor, which Vivienne had originally designated as a guest sitting room and which I had quietly converted without asking anyone's permission. Rosalie was sorting correspondence while I worked through the latest numbers from the human-market accounts. The afternoon light came in flat and gray through the window, and the pack house was doing its usual thing of being very large and very quiet in a way that always feels slightly like held breath.

"She's meeting with the Harmon family again," Rosalie said, without looking up from the letters. "Tomorrow afternoon. Silas Vane is going to be there."

I kept my eyes on my screen. "Is he."

"He's been at three of the last four meetings." A pause. "I don't think that's a coincidence."

It wasn't. Silas Vane was Ironvale's Beta, which meant he was Damian's second-in-command, which meant his presence at Vivienne's private strategy sessions was a problem with a specific shape and a specific name. I filed it and kept my expression neutral.

"Good," I said. "Keep watching."

Rosalie nodded and went back to the letters. After a moment she said, quietly, "She told me you'd be threatened by me. That you'd try to get rid of me."

"I know."

"She was wrong."

"She usually is," I said. "About people."

Rosalie was quiet for a moment. Then, almost to herself: "She's not wrong about everything, though."

I looked up at that. She wasn't looking at me — her eyes were on the window, on the gray October light, on something I couldn't see.

I didn't ask what she meant. I had a feeling I'd find out eventually.

Sable stirred, low and slow, somewhere behind my ribs. Not alarmed. Just attentive.

I turned back to my numbers and let the silence sit between us, easy and undemanding, the way silence only gets when two people have stopped performing for each other.

It was, I realized, the first time in a long time that a room had felt like that.

I wasn't sure what to do with it.
