Chapter 4

We found it on a Tuesday night, just past midnight, with scent-masking herbs smoldering in Riley's clay dish and the pipes groaning their usual complaints behind the wall.

The purchase log was the seventh document Riley had pulled from the external supplier's transaction record — a private channel, not the pack procurement system, paid from an account registered to a name I didn't recognize but that Riley had traced back to Estella in three careful steps. The delivery schedule was printed in small, tidy columns.

I laid it against the prenatal prescription chart I'd photographed from my own medical file.

The dates lined up.

Not approximately. Not close enough to argue coincidence. They lined up the way two halves of the same key line up — each delivery arriving within two days of each documented change to my herbal dosage, the kind of timing that required planning. The kind of timing that required someone who knew my treatment schedule in advance because she had written it herself.

I sat very still.

Riley was watching my hands.

"Sable," I said quietly, inside.

*I see it,* she said. Nothing else.

"All of it," I said aloud, to Riley. "We copy all of it."

Riley was already moving. She had a small encrypted drive she'd sourced from a contact two territories over — nothing linked to the Silvercrest network, nothing that could be remotely wiped — and she worked quickly, her hands steady, her tracker's nose still reading the room at intervals the way it always did when she was in a situation she didn't fully control. I photographed every page with my phone, then photographed them again with a second device Riley had acquired for exactly this purpose.

When we were done, she sealed the backup copies in a scent-masked container — a design she'd built herself, lined with something that masked the paper smell to any nose but her own. She would bury it in a location she didn't tell me. That was intentional. If someone went through my things and found nothing, the second set would survive.

I slid the originals inside the journal cover, pressed them flat, and held the journal against my sternum for a moment with both hands.

My baby had had a heartbeat. I had the document that said so. I had the document that had been written to replace it. And now I had the record of exactly what had been ordered, and when, and how it had been paid for, and the careful, deliberate pattern of a woman who had planned this long enough to set up an account in another name.

I was not angry. I had moved past the place where this made me angry.

I was something colder than that. Something that knew exactly what it was going to do next and was not in any hurry.

---

The shift in the pack came slowly, then all at once.

I noticed it first in the way people looked at me.

For three years I had lived inside a particular kind of look — the sideways kind, the kind that slid off you and moved on, carrying the weight of "barren" and "weak" without ever saying either word to your face. I had catalogued that look. I knew its weight by now.

This was different.

This was softer on the surface and worse underneath. Pity with something else inside it. The look you give someone who you've decided is not only broken but dangerous to their own interests — unhinged, fragile, a problem for everyone around her.

The first time I saw it clearly, I was crossing the main corridor on my way back from the administrative wing. A pair of Delta wolves — women I had greeted at three pack functions, women who had smiled back at me with the careful neutrality of people who hadn't yet picked a side — stepped apart to let me through. One of them murmured something to the other.

I didn't catch the words.

I didn't need to. I had read Estella's posts that morning.

She had been careful. She was always careful. The language was the language of concern — *I am heartbroken at what our Luna is going through, and I understand why she needs someone to blame, but I am frightened for her, and I think the pack should know I am not the enemy she's made me in her grief.* She had included specific details — dates, the gentle mention of the Alpha tone Jaden had "had to use" for Maeve's own wellbeing, the phrase *she came at me in my own office* written in the passive, bewildered register of a woman who couldn't understand why this was happening to her.

It was beautifully done. I could see the architecture of it — the layered framing, the pre-emptive claim of victimhood, the careful seeding of "unstable" into the spaces between every line without ever saying the word directly.

Pack members who had been neutral were now looking at me with that new look.

I pressed my thumb against my wrist once, on my way back to the Alpha wing. Held the pressure. Released it.

Sable was quiet.

I kept walking.

---

The invitation arrived three days later.

Not from Jaden. From Vivienne's personal Omega — a young wolf named Cress who came to my door with her eyes down and a cream-colored envelope held in both hands, the kind of deliberate formality that was itself a message. Vivienne knew I would notice who had been sent. Vivienne intended me to notice.

I took the envelope. I thanked Cress by name, which made her look up for half a second before she remembered her instructions and dropped her gaze back to the floor. None of this was her fault. I had never confused messengers with the people who sent them.

I waited until she was gone before I opened it.

The language was everything I would have expected from Vivienne — warm on the surface, precise as a scalpel underneath. A pack unity celebration. An opportunity for the Silvercrest family to come together in a spirit of healing and shared strength. My presence as Luna was, of course, warmly requested.

I read it twice. Slowly.

Then I set it on the desk and looked at it the way I had looked at those two medical reports laid side by side — trying to see the full shape of what was underneath.

A unity celebration. Vivienne's word for it. And I could already see the seating arrangements she would design: the prominent families positioned at the edges, watching. Estella at the head table, in the Luna's chair, close enough to Jaden's shoulder that the image would do the work for her. A toast, probably, that would make whatever happened to me sound like my own gracious decision.

The room would be full of witnesses.

Vivienne had always understood that the most effective removals look, from the outside, like departures.

I sat with that knowledge for a long moment. Then I picked up my journal and added one more date to the timeline inside the cover, and below it, one line.

*They are going to try to finish this at the banquet.*

I closed the journal.

They were not wrong that the banquet would be where it ended.

They were wrong about how.
