Chapter 2

The mandatory pack meeting was held in the great hall every month, a tradition as old as our pack itself. I arrived early, as I always did, taking my place in the Luna's chair beside the Alpha's throne. The ornate wooden chair had been carved specifically for the pack's first Luna over a century ago, its high back adorned with intricate moon phases that caught the light from the massive chandelier above.

Pack members filtered in gradually, their conversations creating a low hum that filled the vaulted space. I nodded to familiar faces, exchanging polite smiles with the mothers who brought their children, the warriors who'd served our pack faithfully for decades. This was my domain, my responsibility as Luna—to be the nurturing presence that balanced Jason's commanding authority.

Then she walked in.

Raven glided through the hall like she owned it, her long auburn hair cascading over her shoulders in perfect waves. She wore a flowing emerald dress that hugged her curves, the color chosen deliberately to complement Jason's eyes. But it wasn't her appearance that made my breath catch—it was her destination.

She walked directly to my chair.

"Excuse me," I said, my voice carefully controlled as she approached. "That's the Luna's seat."

Raven's lips curved into a smile that didn't reach her eyes. "Not tonight, it isn't." She settled into my chair with deliberate grace, arranging her skirts like a queen claiming her throne.

The hall fell silent. Every conversation stopped, every eye turned toward us. I felt the weight of their stares, the confusion and shock rippling through the crowd like a physical force.

"Raven." My voice carried the authority I'd earned through four years of leading this pack. "You need to move."

"Actually, she doesn't."

Jason's voice cut through the tension as he entered the hall. He strode to his throne without so much as glancing at me, his presence commanding immediate attention. The pack members who'd been watching our confrontation quickly looked away, suddenly finding the floor fascinating.

"Jason," Elder Marcus's weathered voice rose from the front row, his ancient eyes sharp with concern. "This is highly irregular. The Luna's chair has been reserved for the Alpha's mate since the founding of our pack."

Jason finally looked at me, and the coldness in his gaze made my wolf whimper. "Traditions evolve, Elder Marcus. Raven will be taking on special advisory roles as my chosen companion. She deserves a place of honor beside me."

Chosen companion. The words hit me like physical blows, each syllable designed to wound. I stood there, displaced from my rightful position, while the pack watched my humiliation unfold in real time.

"But what about Luna Ivy?" Sarah Mitchell, our Gamma, spoke up from the warriors' section. Her voice carried carefully controlled anger. "She is your fated mate, your Luna by right of the Moon Goddess."

Jason's jaw tightened. "Luna Ivy can stand with the other pack members. This arrangement better reflects the current... dynamics of our leadership."

Current dynamics. He might as well have announced my demotion with a pack-wide howl. I felt my cheeks burn with humiliation as whispers began to spread through the crowd. Some pack members looked at me with pity, others with confusion. A few of the younger wolves seemed almost excited by the drama unfolding before them.

Raven leaned back in my chair—in the Luna's chair—and placed her hand over her still-flat stomach in a gesture that was anything but subtle. "I'm honored to serve the pack in whatever capacity Alpha Jason deems appropriate," she said, her voice carrying just the right note of humble gratitude.

I wanted to scream. I wanted to shift and show her exactly what a real Luna was capable of. Instead, I stood frozen, trapped between my dignity and my rage, while my mate systematically destroyed everything I'd worked to build.

"Now then," Jason continued, settling into his throne as if nothing earth-shattering had just occurred. "Let's begin tonight's meeting."

I remained standing in the space between the leadership area and the general pack seating, belonging to neither. My wolf paced frantically inside my chest, confused and hurt by our mate's rejection. The bond between us pulsed with pain, a constant reminder of what we'd lost and what we were losing still.

As Jason began discussing territory patrols and hunting schedules, I caught Elder Marcus's eye. The old wolf's expression was troubled, his lips pressed into a thin line of disapproval. At least someone recognized the injustice of what was happening.

But recognition wasn't enough. As I stood there, displaced and humiliated before my own pack, I realized that Jason wasn't just choosing Raven over me—he was systematically erasing me from the position I'd earned, the role I'd filled with love and dedication for four years.

The Luna's chair, my chair, remained occupied by the woman who'd stolen my mate's heart. And there wasn't a damn thing I could do about it.
