Chapter 2

Morning light filtered through the penthouse windows as I scrolled through my phone, the ink stain from Marcus's 'reward' still faintly visible on my wrist despite my aggressive scrubbing. Seven years of loyalty reduced to a joke, while Amanda paraded around with a $150,000 timepiece on her delicate wrist.

Nyx growled in my mind. *"She's flaunting it again."*

I tapped on Amanda's latest Instagram post—a perfectly staged photo of her manicured hand resting on a leather-bound planner, the limited-edition Patek Philippe gleaming prominently. The caption read: *"Blessed by my Alpha's generosity. Some gifts are earned through true dedication."*

My finger hovered over the screen. This wasn't just a watch. It was a declaration—Marcus valued her more than his own Luna, more than his own mate.

*"Do it,"* Nyx urged, her silver presence burning bright with indignation. *"Let them all see what we see."*

I pressed the heart icon, watching it turn red. A simple action—liking a Beta's social media post—but in our tightly-wound pack hierarchy, it was the equivalent of throwing down a gauntlet. I was acknowledging her display, confirming to every pack member that I'd seen the comparison between her lavish gift and my cartoon drawing.

Within minutes, my phone buzzed with notifications. Pack members had noticed. The whispers would start. The lines would be drawn.

By dawn the next morning, the tension was palpable as our warriors gathered for training. I led the run as always, my feet pounding the forest trail that circled our territory. The rhythm usually calmed me, but today Nyx was too close to the surface, her anger fueling each stride.

"Quite the social media activity yesterday, Luna," Amanda's voice cut through the morning air as she jogged up beside me, her new watch glinting in the early light. "I was surprised to see you... approve of my post."

Behind us, I sensed several of my warriors slowing their pace, listening.

"It was impossible to miss," I replied evenly. "Much like the difference between a Sharpie drawing and a six-figure timepiece."

Amanda's smile tightened. "We all receive what the Alpha believes we deserve."

"And what exactly have you done to deserve such recognition?" Leo Vance, my most loyal warrior, stepped forward, his normally respectful tone edged with challenge. "Besides warming the Alpha's—"

"Leo," I warned, though Nyx howled in approval.

"No, Luna," another warrior, Kira, joined in. "Everyone sees it. You secured the Nightfall alliance—fifty million in assets—and received a joke. She gets a watch worth more than most pack members make in three years."

Amanda's face flushed with anger. "You forget your place, Delta. Speaking to your Beta this way—"

"Our Beta?" A third warrior scoffed. "You were appointed against protocol. Everyone knows why."

The confrontation escalated, voices rising as more warriors gathered. I should have stopped it, maintained order as Luna, but for once, I remained silent. Let them speak the truth that had been buried for too long.

Within an hour, Marcus called an emergency pack meeting. The grand chamber that had witnessed my humiliation now became the stage for his retribution. He stood at the head of the circle, Amanda slightly behind his right shoulder—a position traditionally reserved for the Luna.

"It has come to my attention," Marcus began, his Alpha tone vibrating through the room, "that certain members of this pack have forgotten the chain of command."

His eyes found Leo, Kira, and Jared—my three most vocal defenders.

"Leo Vance, Kira Chen, Jared Morris—you have disrespected your Beta and, by extension, your Alpha." His voice hardened. "You are hereby demoted to perimeter patrol. Your training privileges are restricted to basic maintenance sessions only."

Gasps rippled through the assembly. Perimeter patrol was typically reserved for new recruits or those who had committed serious infractions. It was menial, exhausting work.

"Alpha," I began, stepping forward.

"This is not open for discussion, Luna," Marcus cut me off, his tone dismissive. "Perhaps if you controlled your warriors better, this wouldn't be necessary."

I felt the collective flinch from my loyal fighters. This wasn't just punishment—it was Marcus drawing a line through our pack, showing everyone what happened to those who stood with me instead of him.

As the meeting dispersed, I caught Leo's eye. Instead of defeat, I saw resolve burning there—mirrored in Kira and Jared's expressions. Something fundamental had shifted today.

I turned away before Marcus could see my face, before he could glimpse the dangerous calculation taking shape behind my eyes. He thought he was crushing resistance, but he'd just ignited something far more dangerous.

He'd forgotten one crucial detail about me: I didn't just fight battles. I won wars.

And this, I realized as I walked away with my head high and Nyx snarling in satisfaction, was the beginning of his end.
