Chapter 3

Consciousness returned to me in fragments—cold air biting at my skin, the musty scent of abandoned wood, and the sharp bite of rope cutting into my wrists. My head throbbed with the lingering effects of whatever Hope had slipped into that cursed tea, and when I tried to move, I discovered my hands were bound behind my back, secured to what felt like a wooden chair.

The hunting cabin materialized around me as my vision cleared. Dust motes danced in shafts of moonlight streaming through cracked windows, and the air carried the stale smell of disuse. This wasn't Silvercrest territory—the scents were all wrong, unfamiliar. We were somewhere on the border, in the no-man's land between packs.

"Finally awake, sleeping beauty?"

Hope's voice cut through the silence like a blade. She emerged from the shadows, still wearing that pristine white dress, her blonde hair catching the moonlight as she moved with predatory grace. But gone was any pretense of sweetness. Her green eyes glittered with malicious triumph, and her smile was all sharp edges.

"Comfortable?" she asked, settling into a chair across from me like we were having tea instead of... whatever this was. "I made sure the ropes weren't too tight. I'm not completely heartless."

I tested my bonds, feeling the coarse rope bite deeper into my skin. Lyra stirred weakly in my mind, still sluggish from the drugs. "You're insane if you think you can get away with this."

"Oh, but I already have." Hope leaned forward, her voice dropping to an intimate whisper. "Do you want to know how long I've been planning this? How many nights I've lain awake, imagining this exact moment?"

She stood and began pacing around my chair, her fingers trailing along the dusty furniture as she moved. "Three years, Bella. Three years of watching you waste everything I would have killed for. The perfect mate, the perfect position, the perfect life—and you threw it all away because of a little spilled wine."

"It wasn't about the wine, and you know it."

"Wasn't it?" Hope's laugh was sharp and bitter. "Poor little Alpha princess, so used to getting her way that one tiny setback sends her into a tantrum. Do you have any idea what some of us would give for what you just discarded?"

She stopped in front of me, crouching down until we were eye level. "I grew up in a two-room shack with parents who could barely afford to feed me. While you were learning pack politics and Alpha protocols, I was scrubbing floors and taking orders from wolves who thought they were better than me just because of their bloodlines."

The raw hatred in her voice made my skin crawl. "So you decided to destroy someone else's life instead of building your own?"

"I decided to take what should have been mine from the beginning." She straightened, smoothing down her dress with deliberate care. "Anakin never loved you, you know. Not really. He loved the idea of you—the political alliance, the status of having an Alpha's daughter as his mate. But me? I see him for who he really is, and I love him anyway."

"You don't love him," I said quietly. "You love what he represents. The title, the power, the escape from whatever you're running from."

Her hand cracked across my cheek before I could blink, the sound echoing through the cabin. "Don't you dare psychoanalyze me, you spoiled bitch. You had everything handed to you on a silver platter, and you threw it away because your precious feelings got hurt."

I tasted blood where my teeth had cut the inside of my cheek, but I kept my voice steady. "Where are the guards who brought me here?"

"Dismissed. This is between us now." Hope resumed her pacing, her movements becoming more agitated. "I've spent years perfecting this plan. Every sympathetic smile, every 'accidental' encounter, every moment I spent building trust with Anakin while you were too arrogant to notice the threat right under your nose."

The cabin door creaked open, and my heart sank as Anakin stepped inside. His brown eyes were cold and calculating as they swept over the scene—me bound to the chair, Hope standing over me like a conquering queen.

"Good," he said simply. "She's awake."

"Did you really think I wouldn't approve of this?" Anakin moved closer, his Alpha presence filling the small space. But where once that presence had made me feel protected, now it felt suffocating and wrong. "You humiliated me in front of my pack, Bella. You rejected our bond and threatened to destroy the alliance that keeps Silvercrest strong."

He crouched down beside Hope, presenting a united front that made my stomach turn. "So we're going to fix this. You're going to accept me as your mate again, publicly, and we're going to pretend this little tantrum never happened."

"And if I refuse?"

Anakin's smile was cold and predatory. "Then I'll mark you anyway. Once my bite is on your neck, the bond will reform whether you want it or not. The Moon Goddess may choose fated mates, but she doesn't interfere with claiming bites."

The threat hung in the air like poison. My blood ran cold as I realized just how far he was willing to go to maintain his control over me.

But somewhere in the darkness beyond the cabin walls, I could have sworn I heard the distant sound of paws against earth, moving fast and getting closer.
