Rejected Luna's Justice Chapter 1

I stared at the ornate grandfather clock in my family's estate, watching the hands tick away what felt like the final moments of my life. Three days since my mother's funeral. Three days since the pack that once revered us had begun to whisper behind cupped hands about the Luna's daughter who wasn't good enough to keep her mate. Three days of suffocating silence in rooms that once echoed with my mother's laughter.

The midday sun streamed through the windows, casting long shadows across the hardwood floors. It should have been warm, comforting even, but I felt nothing but cold emptiness. My wolf, Cinnamon, had been eerily quiet since that night—the night I found Rachel and Leo tangled together in his bed, their betrayal as naked as their bodies.

The knock at the door came like thunder—three authoritative raps that seemed to vibrate through the entire house. I didn't move. The pack had sent their condolences days ago, hollow words from people who now pitied me. I had no interest in more empty sympathy.

"Miss Matthews." Our elderly housekeeper appeared in the doorway, her eyes wide. "Alpha Sterling of the Blackwood Pack is here to see you."

My heart stuttered. Alpha Marcus Sterling? His territory bordered ours, but our packs rarely interacted. He was known for his ruthless efficiency and calculating mind. What business could the most powerful Alpha in three territories have with me?

"Tell him I'm not receiving visitors," I whispered, my voice hoarse from disuse.

Before she could respond, a commanding presence filled the doorway behind her. Alpha Sterling stood there, tall and imposing, his broad shoulders nearly touching both sides of the frame. His eyes, a piercing gold that seemed to see straight through me, locked onto mine.

"Claire Matthews." His voice was deep, the unmistakable Alpha tone resonating with power. Not a question, not a greeting—a statement of fact, as if confirming my existence.

The housekeeper scurried away, leaving me alone with him. I should have felt afraid or at least intimidated, but after everything I'd lost, what more could be taken from me?

"Alpha Sterling," I acknowledged, not bothering to stand. "What brings you to the home of a disgraced she-wolf?"

He moved into the room with predatory grace, each step deliberate. The scent of pine and expensive leather filled the space, strong and undeniably Alpha.

"I've come to make you an offer, Claire." He remained standing, hands clasped behind his back, studying me with calculated interest. "I want you as my Luna."

A strangled laugh escaped my lips before I could stop it. "Is this some kind of cruel joke?"

"I never joke about pack matters." His expression remained impassive. "Your mother was respected among all packs. Her death... was preventable. A tragedy caused by betrayal."

At the mention of my mother, Cinnamon stirred within me, a low growl of grief and anger.

"And what do you get from this arrangement?" I asked, finally rising to my feet. "A broken she-wolf with no standing in her own pack?"

"I get a Luna with royal bloodlines and a legitimate claim to justice." His eyes narrowed slightly. "And you get protection. Vengeance for your mother. A new beginning away from those who betrayed you."

As he spoke, I felt something unexpected—a faint pull, a whisper of connection between us. Not the overwhelming certainty I'd felt with Leo, but something... different. Cinnamon perked up, suddenly alert and interested.

"Justice?" I repeated, the word tasting foreign on my tongue. "For my mother?"

"Rachel Torres should be punished according to pack law," Marcus stated coldly. "As your Alpha, I would have the authority to ensure that happens."

He stepped closer, and I caught another wave of his scent. Something inside me responded, a flicker of warmth in the frozen wasteland of my heart.

"I can protect you, Claire," he continued, his voice dropping lower. "Make you strong again. Give you back what was taken from you."

I searched his face for deception, for cruelty, for pity—finding none. Only cold determination and something else I couldn't quite name.

"And all I have to do is become your Luna?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.

"Yes." One simple word, heavy with implications.

Cinnamon pushed against my consciousness, urging me forward. *Safe*, she seemed to say. *Strong*.

I looked around at the empty house, filled with ghosts and memories. What was left for me here? Whispers? Pity? The constant reminder of double betrayal?

"When would we perform the ceremony?" I asked, sealing my fate with six simple words.
