Chapter 3

The journey to Shadowmoon Pack territory took several hours, most of which passed in contemplative silence. I sat in the passenger seat of Marcus's sleek black SUV, watching the familiar landscape of the Pacific Northwest give way to more rugged, mountainous terrain. My former packmates followed behind us in a caravan—warriors, healers, and their families who had chosen to follow me rather than stay with Ryan. The weight of their trust pressed on my shoulders, heavier than any Luna responsibilities I'd carried before.

Marcus drove with quiet confidence, his large hands steady on the wheel. Occasionally, I'd catch him glancing at me, his dark eyes unreadable in the fading light.

"We're here," he announced as we crested a hill overlooking a sprawling valley. Nestled among ancient pines and protected by the surrounding mountains sat the Shadowmoon Pack house—a massive structure of stone and timber that seemed to grow organically from the landscape.

Unlike the ostentatious display of Silverpine's pack house, with its unnecessary columns and pretentious architecture, this building spoke of strength, protection, and harmony with the wild. My wolf stirred inside me, suddenly alert and curious.

"It's beautiful," I murmured, surprising myself with the sincerity in my voice.

Marcus's lips curved into a small smile. "Wait until you see inside."

After ensuring my followers were settled in their temporary quarters, Marcus led me through the main hall of the pack house. Pack members stopped to bow their heads respectfully as we passed, their eyes curious but not hostile. I kept my chin high, though inside I was a tangle of uncertainty. This was not how I had imagined becoming a Luna—through contract rather than love, in a pack of strangers rather than the one I had helped build.

"The west wing houses the pack's common areas and most of the warriors' quarters," Marcus explained as we climbed a wide staircase. "My chambers are in the north wing, overlooking the training grounds."

He led me down a corridor in the east wing, stopping before a set of double doors carved with a crescent moon and mountain silhouette—the Shadowmoon Pack symbol.

"And this," he said, pushing the doors open, "is your domain."

I stepped inside and froze. The suite before me was nothing like the modest room I'd occupied at Silverpine. Spacious and elegant, it featured a sitting area with comfortable furniture arranged around a stone fireplace, a sleeping chamber with a massive bed draped in soft-looking blankets, and a private bathroom glimpsed through another doorway.

But what truly caught my breath was the adjoining room Marcus showed me next—a war room, with a large strategy table, maps covering the walls, and shelves of books on military history and pack law.

"I thought you might appreciate having your own space to work," he said, watching my reaction carefully. "The previous Luna preferred to conduct business from the main hall, but given your strategic mind..."

He trailed off as I ran my fingers over the smooth surface of the strategy table, unable to speak past the lump in my throat. Ryan had never given me a dedicated space for my work—I'd always had to make do with whatever corner or table was available.

"There's one more thing," Marcus said, leading me to yet another door. It opened onto a private balcony overlooking the forest, the mountains rising majestically in the distance. The view was breathtaking—wild and free.

"Your domain," he repeated softly, then stepped back. "I'll leave you to settle in. Dinner is served in the main hall at eight, but if you prefer privacy tonight, I can have meals brought to you."

I turned to face him, struggling to understand this man who was now my mate in name, if not in heart. "Thank you," I managed, the words inadequate for what I was feeling.

He nodded once, then left me alone with my thoughts and the unexpected generosity of his welcome.

The next morning, I woke to the sounds of excited voices and movement throughout the pack house. My body felt stiff from the unfamiliar bed, but my mind was clearer than it had been in days.

I dressed quickly in the clothes that had been provided for me—practical jeans and a soft henley in Shadowmoon's colors of gray and deep blue. As I stepped into the corridor, I nearly collided with a young she-wolf who squeaked in surprise.

"Luna Olivia! I'm so sorry—I was just coming to see if you needed anything."

"What's happening?" I asked, hearing the commotion downstairs.

"The dawn run," she explained, eyes bright with excitement. "Alpha Marcus leads the pack through the territory every morning at sunrise. It's... well, it's something special."

Curiosity piqued, I followed her downstairs to find the main hall filled with pack members in various states of undress, preparing to shift. Marcus stood at the center, his powerful presence drawing all eyes. When he saw me, something flickered across his face—pleasure, perhaps, or surprise.

"Luna," he acknowledged with a nod. "Will you join us?"

It had been weeks since I'd last run with Silverpine. Ryan had always been too busy with pack business—business I usually handled—to lead regular runs. My wolf whined eagerly inside me, desperate for the freedom of the forest.

"Yes," I said simply.

Outside, in the cool morning air, I shed my borrowed clothes without self-consciousness and let my wolf take over. The shift was smooth and painless, my white wolf form emerging with a shake of fur. Around me, the Shadowmoon Pack shifted as well—a synchronized dance of magic and nature that spoke of practice and unity.

Marcus's wolf was magnificent—larger than any I'd seen, with midnight black fur and piercing amber eyes. He threw his head back in a commanding howl that sent shivers down my spine, and then we were running.

The territory was new to me, but my wolf seemed to know instinctively where to go, keeping pace with the others as we wove through ancient trees and leaped over fallen logs. The feeling was exhilarating—the pound of paws on earth, the crisp scent of pine, the sense of belonging to something wild and free.

I noticed a young delta wolf stumbling on a particularly rough patch of terrain, his inexperience showing in his awkward movements. Without thinking, I veered toward him, nudging him gently with my muzzle and showing him a better path through the undergrowth. He yipped gratefully, falling into step beside me.

As we circled back toward the pack house, I caught several of the older wolves nodding in my direction, respect evident in their posture. And from a ridge above the trail, I felt Marcus's amber gaze following me, something like pride glinting in those wolf eyes.

For the first time since Ryan's rejection, I felt my wolf truly settle within me. This wasn't home—not yet—but it could be.

Three days passed in a blur of introductions and adjustments. I spent my mornings running with the pack, my afternoons meeting with my former Silverpine followers to ensure their integration, and my evenings in the war room, familiarizing myself with Shadowmoon's territories and alliances.

Marcus and I established a careful routine around each other—polite, respectful, but distant. The marking bond hummed between us, a constant reminder of our contract, but neither of us pushed for more. I was still healing, and he seemed content to give me space.

On the fourth night, a soft knock at my door pulled me from my study of border maps. I opened it to find Marcus standing there, something small and white cradled in his massive hands.

"May I come in?" he asked, his deep voice unusually hesitant.

I stepped aside, curious. In the light of my sitting room, I could see what he held—a tiny wolf pup, no larger than a house cat, with fur as white as snow and eyes that hadn't yet opened.

"She was abandoned by a rogue pack near our northern border," Marcus explained, gently transferring the sleeping pup to my arms. "My scouts found her yesterday. She's weak, but Seraphina thinks she'll survive with proper care."

The pup stirred in my arms, her small body warm and fragile. Something protective and fierce welled up inside me as I cradled her close.

"Why bring her to me?" I asked softly, unable to take my eyes off the tiny creature.

Marcus was quiet for a moment, his dark eyes watching me with an intensity that made my skin tingle.

"She reminded me of you," he finally said. "Strong, despite being abandoned. Survivor's instinct. And..."

"And?" I prompted when he hesitated.

"The white fur," he admitted. "It's rare, like yours. I thought perhaps it was a sign."

The pup chose that moment to wake, her tiny pink tongue darting out to lick my hand. Tears pricked at my eyes, surprising me with their suddenness.

"What will you name her?" Marcus asked, his voice gentle in the moonlit room.

I looked down at the small bundle of fur in my arms, this abandoned creature who had somehow found her way to me. "Luna," I whispered. "Her name is Luna."

Marcus's eyes met mine, and something passed between us—something deeper than our contract, more significant than our marks. For the first time, I wondered if this arrangement might become more than just a strategic alliance.

Little Luna yawned in my arms, oblivious to the moment she had created, while outside, the real moon rose higher in the night sky, casting silver light across my new beginning.
