Chapter 2

I collapsed onto my childhood bed, still wearing the ceremonial white dress that now felt like a mockery. The fabric that had once symbolized hope and promise now clung to my skin like a shroud. My body shook with sobs that tore from somewhere deep and primal, beyond conscious thought or control.

Silver, my wolf, had retreated to the darkest corner of my mind, her whimpers a haunting echo to my own cries. The rejection had wounded her as deeply as it had me—perhaps more. Wolves mated for life. What happened when that life was torn away before it even began?

"Sophia." My father's voice cut through my grief, gentle but urgent.

I couldn't look at him. The pity in his eyes would destroy what little composure I had left. "Leave me," I whispered, my voice raw.

"Daughter, look at me." There was something in his tone—not pity, but determination.

I forced myself to meet his gaze, surprised to find not the expected sympathy, but a calculating resolve that seemed out of place in the wake of my humiliation.

"What you've endured today..." He shook his head, disgust evident in the tight line of his mouth. "No father should ever see his daughter treated with such dishonor."

"It doesn't matter now," I said, the words hollow even to my own ears. "I'm nothing. A rejected mate. I'll be lucky if they let me stay as an Omega."

"No." The single word carried the weight of absolute refusal. "You will never be an Omega, Sophia. Not in this pack or any other."

He reached into his jacket and withdrew a scroll sealed with wax the color of midnight, embossed with a symbol I didn't recognize—a crown surrounded by a full moon.

"What is that?" I asked, sitting up despite myself.

"Insurance." He handed me the scroll, his eyes never leaving mine. "Your mother and I... we suspected Brandon might not honor the mate bond. His father never did, and the apple rarely falls far from the tree."

Silver stirred in my mind, suddenly alert.

"This is a betrothal pact," he continued, "arranged months ago with Alpha King Alexander Sterling of the Moonstone Kingdom."

The name sent a shiver down my spine. Everyone knew of the Alpha King—his power was legendary, his territory vast and prosperous. And he was offering me sanctuary?

"Why would he agree to this?" I whispered, running my fingers over the royal seal.

"Our families have history," my father said simply. "And he respects the sanctity of the mate bond more than most. When I explained our concerns..."

"You arranged another mate for me?" The betrayal stung, though not as deeply as Brandon's rejection.

"Not a mate, Sophia. A chance." His eyes softened. "The choice is yours. Stay here and face a life of servitude and mockery, or leave tonight for the Moonstone Kingdom."

Silver pushed forward in my mind, her presence suddenly stronger than it had been since the rejection.

*"Go,"* she urged. *"There's nothing for us here but pain."*

I clutched the scroll to my chest, feeling the first spark of something beyond despair—determination, perhaps. Or simply the will to survive.

"When?" I asked.

"Midnight," my father replied. "Pack only what you can carry. The Beta of the Moonstone Kingdom is already waiting at the edge of our territory."

The hours passed in a blur of silent preparation. I shed the white dress like a snake shedding its skin, replacing it with sturdy traveling clothes. Into a single satchel went the few possessions I couldn't bear to leave behind—my mother's silver hairbrush, a small book of pack history, a childhood photograph.

As the moon reached its zenith, I stood at my bedroom window one last time. The familiar view of pine trees and distant mountains blurred through my tears. This had been my home, my pack, my life. And now I was leaving it all behind.

"It's time," my father said from the doorway.

Outside, a tall figure stood sentinel in the shadows—Lucian Vance, the Beta of the Moonstone Kingdom. His presence was imposing even at a distance, his aura radiating power and authority.

"He will take you safely to Alpha King Alexander," my father assured me, embracing me one last time.

I nodded, unable to speak past the lump in my throat. With one final look at the only home I'd ever known, I stepped into the night, my heart pounding with fear and the faintest glimmer of hope.

What awaited me in the Moonstone Kingdom? And who was this Alpha King who had offered sanctuary to a rejected mate?
