Chapter 3

Word had been spreading about our small but thriving Silver Dawn Pack. I could feel it in the way neighboring packs began sending scouts to observe our hunting grounds, in how messengers arrived more frequently with queries about our methods. What had begun as twelve castaway wolves in the Silver Pines had grown to nearly thirty in just five years—not massive by traditional standards, but formidable in our efficiency and unity.

I stood at the edge of our territory, watching as Kaelan, the aging Beta of the Silver Bridge Pack, approached with purposeful strides. His weathered face looked animated, more energetic than I'd seen him in months.

"Blair," he called, not bothering with formalities. That was what I appreciated about him—no posturing, just substance. "I've just come from the regional summit."

The regional summit—a gathering of pack representatives from across three territories. Gabriel would have sent Julian, his blindly loyal Beta, to represent Crimson Ridge.

"And?" I asked, keeping my voice neutral though Emma stirred with curiosity inside me.

Kaelan's eyes sparkled with mischief. "I may have mentioned Silver Dawn's hunting yields. How you've managed to secure twice the resources with half the wolves compared to traditional packs."

My stomach tightened. "Kaelan—"

"They needed to hear it," he insisted, unrepentant. "For too long, Alphas like Gabriel have defined success through extravagance and dominance rather than innovation and sustainability."

He described how pack representatives had leaned forward in their seats as he detailed our rotating hunting patterns, our resource-sharing protocols, our training methods that emphasized strategy over brute strength.

"The whispers have begun," Kaelan said, satisfaction evident in his voice. "A new leader rises in the Silver Pines—one who builds rather than conquers."

Emma preened inside me, but I tempered her pride with caution. "Attention brings scrutiny. Scrutiny brings challenges."

"Or opportunities," Kaelan countered. "The Iron Fang Pack is seeking new alliances. Their Alpha approached me after my speech."

My brow furrowed. "Iron Fang? They've had three territorial disputes in the past year alone. Their reputation for honoring agreements is questionable at best."

Kaelan nodded grimly. "Which is exactly what I told Gabriel's Beta when he practically tripped over himself to schedule a meeting with them."

A cold weight settled in my stomach. I knew Gabriel's patterns all too well—his hunger for status, his willingness to overlook red flags if an alliance looked impressive on paper.

"He'll make the deal," I murmured, already seeing the consequences unfold.

"Without question," Kaelan agreed. "And when it inevitably collapses..."

"Silver Dawn will be positioned as the more stable alternative," I finished, understanding his strategy.

Three months later, Kaelan's prediction proved painfully accurate. The alliance between Crimson Ridge and Iron Fang disintegrated spectacularly when Iron Fang's Alpha was caught siphoning resources from shared hunting grounds. The fallout was swift and brutal—Iron Fang Pack fractured, with many members caught in the crossfire of their Alpha's poor decisions.

I stood at our northern border, watching as a group of fifteen wolves—mostly young Deltas and their families—approached cautiously. Their scents carried exhaustion, fear, and the unmistakable trace of Iron Fang territory.

"We seek sanctuary," their spokesperson, a lean wolf named Darius, announced. "Our Alpha's actions have left us homeless, and Crimson Ridge has closed their borders to us."

Of course they had. Gabriel would never admit his error in judgment by sheltering the victims of his failed alliance.

"What do you offer Silver Dawn in return?" I asked, not unkindly but practically.

Darius straightened. "We are skilled hunters, trained in mountain terrain. We bring knowledge of three unmapped cave systems that would provide excellent winter shelter. And we bring loyalty to whoever judges us by our own merits rather than our former Alpha's mistakes."

Emma rumbled with approval inside me. *They would strengthen us*, she urged.

"Silver Dawn offers refuge to those who contribute to our community," I said, stepping aside to welcome them across our border. "Your skills will be valued here."

As word spread of Silver Dawn's growth and Crimson Ridge's diplomatic blunder, I received an unexpected visitor. Mira rushed to my cabin one evening, her eyes wide.

"Alpha," she said, the title still strange on her lips despite my acceptance of it, "there's something you need to see."

She handed me a crumpled flyer, clearly taken from a pack bulletin board. My breath caught as I read the ornate announcement: Victoria Hayes, Luna of Crimson Ridge, would be hosting an extravagant Moonlight Banquet to celebrate their pack's "continued prosperity."

The image showed Victoria draped in imported furs, diamonds glittering at her throat, standing before Gabriel's pack house that now featured expanded wings and gilded gates.

"Our sources say the pack treasury is half what it was when you left," Mira said quietly. "She's draining them dry, and Gabriel is too blinded by status to see it."

Emma growled softly within me, not from jealousy but from strategic recognition. Every resource wasted on Victoria's vanity was one less invested in pack strength.

"Let them continue," I said, setting the flyer aside. "Every empire built on sand eventually crumbles."

What I didn't say—what I barely allowed myself to think—was that the foundation of Gabriel's empire had been my strategies, my careful planning, my tireless work. Without those, all his wealth and Victoria's glamour were just a glittering facade hiding the rot beneath.

And soon, very soon, the facade would crack for all to see.
