Chapter 2

The servant quarters reeked of mildew and despair. I sat on the thin mattress that had become my world for the past week, staring at the cracked walls that seemed to close in on me with each passing hour. The sacred pack heirloom—a delicate silver moon pendant that had supposedly been found in my belongings—lay heavy in my mind like a stone.

I hadn't stolen it. I would never steal anything, especially not something sacred to our pack. But when Ivory had "discovered" it during the pack meeting, her tears streaming down her porcelain cheeks as she clutched Phoenix's arm, the entire room had turned against me in an instant.

"How could you, Hazel?" she had sobbed, her voice breaking with such perfect anguish that even I almost believed her performance. "This pendant belonged to my grandmother. It was blessed by the Moon Goddess herself. How could you take something so precious to me?"

Phoenix's golden eyes had blazed with fury as they fixed on me. "Is this true?" His Alpha voice had commanded an answer, but what could I say? The pendant had been in my drawer, wrapped in tissue paper I'd never seen before.

"I didn't—" I had started, but Phoenix's hand had slammed against the meeting table.

"Enough! You've brought shame upon this pack for the last time." His words had cut through me like silver blades. "You will be stripped of all privileges and confined to the servant quarters until I decide your punishment."

Now, a week later, I was going mad in this tiny room. The other pack members whispered when they brought my meager meals, their eyes filled with disgust and disappointment. The woman who had supposedly been their Luna was nothing more than a common thief in their eyes.

But it was the silence about my son that truly broke me. No one mentioned him. No one asked about the pup who had died in Phoenix's arms while his father's claws carved scars into my back. It was as if he had never existed at all.

I couldn't take it anymore.

That night, I slipped from my quarters and made my way through the darkened halls toward Phoenix's office. If I was going to be punished for crimes I didn't commit, then at least I would speak the truth about what had really happened to our son.

The pack house was quiet, most members already asleep. My bare feet made no sound on the marble floors as I climbed the stairs to the Alpha's wing. Phoenix's office door stood slightly ajar, golden light spilling into the hallway.

I pushed it open and stepped inside, my heart hammering against my ribs.

Phoenix looked up from his desk, his expression shifting from surprise to cold anger. "What are you doing here? You're supposed to be confined to your quarters."

"I need to tell you the truth," I said, my voice stronger than I felt. "About our son. About what really happened during the naming ceremony."

His eyes flashed dangerously. "There is nothing to discuss."

"Yes, there is!" The words burst from me like a dam breaking. "You killed him, Phoenix. When you rejected our bond, when you chose Ivory over your own son, you killed him. I felt it happen through our connection. I felt his little heart stop beating because his father couldn't love him."

Phoenix's Alpha aura slammed into me like a physical blow, driving me to my knees. "Silence!" His voice carried the full weight of his authority, and my wolf whimpered in submission. "You will not speak these lies. You will not dishonor the memory of our pup with your desperate fantasies."

"They're not lies," I gasped, fighting against the compulsion to stay silent. "You know what happened. You felt it too—"

"Enough!" He stood, towering over me with barely contained rage. "These are the desperate accusations of a rejected she-wolf. Nothing more. If you continue to spread these false claims about our relationship, about what happened to the pup, I will have you exiled from this territory permanently."

The threat hung in the air between us like poison. I stared up at him, this man I had loved for three years, and saw only a stranger. A cruel, heartless stranger who would rather protect his reputation than acknowledge the truth about his own son's death.

With trembling legs, I pushed myself to my feet. "I understand," I whispered.

But as I turned to leave, my eyes caught sight of something on his desk that made my blood turn to ice. Documents scattered across the mahogany surface, official-looking papers with the pack seal embossed in gold.

Mating ceremony arrangements. Venue bookings. Guest lists.

All dated for the next full moon.

All bearing Ivory's name as the intended Luna.

My hands shook as I reached for the nearest document, a letter from Alpha Marcus of the Northern Ridge Pack. The words blurred together at first, but then they came into sharp, devastating focus:

*Phoenix, the council agrees that Miss Johnston would make an excellent political alliance. Her family's connections to the Eastern territories would strengthen your pack's position considerably. We understand your... temporary arrangement with the Davis girl served its purpose, but it's time to choose a Luna who can truly benefit the pack's future.*

Temporary arrangement.

The words echoed in my mind as I read letter after letter, each one discussing me like I was nothing more than a convenient mistress, a way for Phoenix to satisfy his wolf's needs while he planned his real future with Ivory.

Three years. Three years of believing I was his mate, his chosen one, his future Luna. Three years of accepting scraps of his attention while telling myself that love would eventually conquer all.

All of it had been a lie.

"You were never going to choose me," I whispered, the documents trembling in my hands. "This was all planned. The ceremony, the mating, everything—it was all just a game to you."

Phoenix's face had gone pale, but his expression remained cold. "Put those down, Hazel. You have no right to—"

"No right?" I laughed, and the sound was hollow and broken. "I had no right to know that my mate was planning to marry another woman? I had no right to know that I've been nothing but a temporary arrangement for three years?"

I dropped the papers, watching them flutter to the floor like the ashes of my shattered dreams.
