Chapter 1

It was a breezy Saturday morning; the sun was up, and rays of sunlight forced themselves through the window, casting a beautiful golden light on Laura, who was lying lazily on her bed curled up like a kitten.

Ding!

Her phone beeped. It was a message from her best friend, Anna.

Anna: Good morning, sunshine. I've got something for you.

Laura texted her back. "What do you want? I thought you were going to your aunt's wedding today."

Anna: Yeah, sure. I'm still going. Don't worry about me. There's this fantastic app that I came across. I'll send you the link. I think you'll like it. (Link).

She didn't speak of matchmaking, just as usual. It was surprising; Anna always liked to play matchmaker for her. It always excited her. Of course, Laura always refused to play along with her after breaking up with her first boyfriend two years ago. She had refused to date any other guy and even started keeping her distance from men.

Anna was afraid that she was developing voluntary celibacy and worried that Laura might not find a husband. She had set Laura up on dinner dates which always turned out bad.

Laura understood her worry, but she didn't care anyway. She wanted to be a celebrity; her career was what mattered to her, and she wasn't even the slightest bit interested in being in a relationship now.

She opened the link on her app store. "Oh, it seems like it's too early to judge that damn Anna." She stared at the app, looking amused. It was a dating app. "Find your soulmate," she sighed. "I should have known that Anna was up to no good."

She clicked the download button on her app store; she was bored anyway and wasn't going anywhere today. Besides, the app had a high rating, piquing her interest.

She waited patiently for the app to download before opening it. The first thing she thought when she opened it was that the developers were quite capable. Its interface and functionality were all top-notch.

She created an account and named herself "The lonely snow," then she used a picture of her dog, a Lhasa Apso. It looked very cute with a funny expression. She started scrolling through the app and came across a peculiar name, "The ugly monkey king."

"What a peculiar name," she thought. She decided to send him a friend request. He accepted immediately.

Ugly monkey king: Hi

Lonely snow: Hello

Ugly monkey king: I like your name; it's very unique.

"Wow, he is very straightforward," she thought before typing some words.

Lonely snow: Yours too; it's very unique.

His name was really unique and funny. She wondered if he was really ugly; how would he look in real life? She became thoughtful and started thinking of meeting him. It was just a small thought at first, but it started getting stronger the more they chatted.

The lonely monkey king doesn't seem to be well-skilled in picking up girls and makes stiff jokes. Laura found it funny. She replied in kind and especially made some jokes about his flirting.

The ugly monkey king: Will you go out on a date with me?

A date, she hesitated. Normally she would always politely reject whenever someone asked her out on a date. The few dates she had gone on were all orchestrated by Anna. But this time, she was really curious to meet this unfamiliar man.

Lonely snow: When?

Ugly monkey king: Tonight if you can.

Lonely snow: All right.

Ugly monkey king: Westview restaurant, 6:00 pm.

Lonely: Ok.

She went offline. 'Wow, I can't believe that I actually agreed to go on a blind date. The man won't be too ugly, right?'

She wasn't expecting her date to be handsome anyway. From the look of his name, maybe he wasn't that good-looking. It doesn't matter anyway; I was just going to have fun after all.

'Maybe I should go out for a morning walk,' she thought. It was a sunny morning, and she wasn't going to the entertainment industry today. She wore a jersey with shorts.

Her very sensitive dog, Nana, saw her and ran towards her. "Do you want to go out, little guy?" It barked and wiggled its tail as if saying yes. She took a leash and put it on him. "Come on, let's go and have a walk."

Today was the weekend, and many people could be seen in pairs with their partners. Laura and the little dog attracted lots of attention. Laura has a stunningly beautiful face, and her body was very curvaceous and well-rounded.

She carried herself with such a strong aura that even though most of the men were admiring her figure from a distance, they didn't dare confront her.

Laura didn't notice anything; even if she did, she was already used to it. Right now, her mind was occupied by something else.

She had been signed to Headway Entertainment Industry as a new artist. She wanted to be a musician but was offered a chance to be an actress for now.

At first, she was supposed to feature in the new movie, which was going to be a blockbuster, as a side character. She had gone to the auditorium and won the position as the female lead. Knowing that she couldn't be allowed to take on the new role as a newcomer, no matter how talented she was.

She was shocked when she heard that she was going to keep the role. It came as a huge surprise for her, so she went to see her manager. Her manager told her that someone had taken a liking to her and was backing her. It also happened that the person was the highest investor in the movie.

At first, she had been so grateful and was thinking of how to thank the investor. On Friday, her manager came and told her that the investor wants to meet her on Sunday in a hotel to tell her why he helped her.

It came as a surprise to her, and she was reminded of the rules of the entertainment industry. It was very likely that the investor wanted something from her.

I was kneeling on the warped linoleum of my trailer, packing my life into a trash bag, when the predatory purr of a luxury SUV echoed through the thin walls. I thought it was a raid, but it was something much worse. Julian Sterling, a federal prosecutor in a charcoal suit, stepped into the mud and bought me from my alcoholic stepfather. He didn't use cash; he used a list of felonies and a legal settlement to trade my freedom for my stepfather's silence. "Throw it away," Julian ordered, pointing at the bag containing everything I owned. I watched my sister's stuffed bear fall into an oil puddle as he forced me into a world of cold leather and silence. By the time we reached Boston, Faith Vance was dead. He forced me to sign papers changing my name to Elara, erasing my past to fit a narrative of Swiss boarding schools and high-society breeding. The horror didn't stop there. The family patriarch, Arthur Sterling, looked at us with hawk-like eyes and issued a command that turned my blood to ice. To avoid scandal, Julian and I were to be introduced as "Brother" and "Sister." Julian's jaw tightened until a vein throbbed in his temple, and when he finally called me "Sister," the word sounded like a curse. I sat at a dinner table worth more than my hometown, swallowing oysters that tasted like salt and iodine, while Julian created a physical barrier between me and the wolves. Under the tablecloth, I reached out and squeezed his clenched fist. His fingers uncurled and captured mine in a grip so crushing it felt like a pact signed in the dark. For three years, June played the perfect, submissive wife to billionaire Augustus Pruitt, hoping a child would finally warm his cold heart and secure their marriage. But when she cautiously suggested they have a baby, he looked at her with pure, unfiltered disgust. "A woman who schemes her way into a marriage doesn't get to carry my blood." He sneered, leaving immediately to lavish his mistress with diamonds. The nightmare only escalated from there. Augustus bought the one painting June desperately wanted—a piece she had secretly created herself—just to gift it to his mistress. He publicly outbid June at the gallery, mocking her lack of wealth, and left her to collapse in the freezing rain. When the storm gave her a severe 104-degree fever and she nearly died on their staircase, he didn't even stay by her hospital bed. Instead, he sent an assistant with a box of jewelry to buy her silence, then forced her to attend a family dinner where his mother and sister viciously mocked her barren womb and background. Looking at Augustus, who sat there casually cutting his steak while his family tore her apart, the last flicker of hope in June's chest sputtered and died. She finally understood that her three years of bleeding devotion were nothing but a pathetic joke to them. She dropped her silverware, the sharp clatter silencing the entire room. She wasn't going to be their punching bag anymore. It was time to finalize the divorce papers, reclaim her hidden identity as the world-renowned artist 'mr.sun', and make them all regret it.
