Chapter 21

The next morning, the headlines began.

Not explosive.

Not yet.

But deliberate.

"Questions Arise Over Vaughn Enterprises' Internal Stability."

"CEO's Personal Life Raises Governance Concerns."

Zara read them on her tablet while standing in the penthouse kitchen, her coffee untouched.

Adrian was already dressed in a charcoal suit, cufflinks fastened, expression carved from stone.

"They're testing the waters," he said calmly.

"You knew this would happen."

"I expected it."

She set the tablet down. "And the photos?"

"They won't release them publicly." His jaw tightened slightly. "Not yet."

Zara studied him carefully. "You're too calm."

"That's because this isn't the real attack."

As if summoned by his words, his phone buzzed.

He glanced at the screen.

Board emergency session. 10 a.m.

Adrian smiled faintly.

"There it is."

The Drive to War

The ride to Vaughn Enterprises headquarters was silent.

The city outside moved like nothing was happening.

People walking. Traffic flowing. Life continuing.

Meanwhile, inside the car, their marriage was being dissected like a liability report.

Zara turned to him.

"You're going to shut me out in there, aren't you?"

"Yes."

The bluntness stung.

"But I shouldn't," he added quietly.

Her heart flickered.

"You said this is corporate war."

"It is."

"Then stop treating me like I'm fragile."

He looked at her fully for the first time since they left.

"You have no idea how ruthless this room can be."

"Then let me see it."

The car slowed.

They had arrived.

Adrian hesitated.

That hesitation told her everything.

He was calculating risk.

Finally, he spoke.

"You sit beside me. You say nothing unless I ask you to."

Zara nodded once.

That was enough.

The Boardroom

The air inside the executive boardroom was heavy.

Long mahogany table. Floor-to-ceiling windows. Ten board members seated in tense silence.

And at the far end -

Victor.

Impeccable. Relaxed. Smiling.

"Adrian," he greeted smoothly. "And Zara. What a pleasant surprise."

His tone implied the opposite.

Adrian didn't respond to the bait. He took his seat at the head of the table.

Zara sat beside him.

Victor folded his hands.

"I'll get straight to the point. Concerns have been raised regarding conflicts of interest within executive leadership."

A board member cleared her throat. "Specifically, the CEO's wife meeting privately with a voting board member."

There it was.

Laid out like a courtroom accusation.

Zara felt eyes shift toward her.

Adrian's voice remained steady. "If this meeting is about my marriage, we are wasting company time."

Victor leaned back. "It's about influence."

He tapped a remote.

The screen behind him lit up.

The photos.

Carefully selected. Strategically angled. Damaging.

A murmur rippled across the table.

Zara felt heat rise to her face - not guilt, but anger.

Victor continued smoothly. "Perception matters. Investors may interpret this as internal manipulation."

Adrian finally spoke.

"Is there evidence of misconduct?"

Victor smiled thinly. "The optics are concerning."

One board member nodded. "Public trust is fragile right now."

Adrian's hand tightened slightly on the table.

He was holding back.

Zara could feel it.

Victor delivered the final blow.

"Perhaps temporary removal of decision-making authority would reassure stakeholders until the merger concludes."

Silence.

The implication was clear.

Suspend Adrian. Delay the merger. Miss the deadline.

Game over.

The Unexpected Move

Zara's pulse pounded.

She had promised to stay silent.

But this wasn't strategy anymore.

It was sabotage.

Slowly, she stood.

Adrian's hand brushed her wrist in warning.

She gave him a look that said trust me.

Then she faced the board.

"You're right," she said calmly.

The room shifted.

Victor's smile widened slightly.

Interesting, his eyes seemed to say.

Zara continued.

"Perception does matter. Which is why I'd like to clarify something."

She turned toward the screen.

"That meeting was requested by Mr. Hale under the pretense of discussing a charitable foundation initiative."

Victor's expression flickered - just slightly.

Zara met his gaze directly.

"He presented what he claimed were concerns about my husband's leadership. I defended my husband."

A murmur.

She didn't stop.

"If there is any conflict of interest, it is not on my side of this table."

Silence thickened.

One board member frowned. "Are you suggesting manipulation?"

Zara held Victor's gaze.

"I'm suggesting that someone in this room benefits if this merger fails."

The temperature in the room dropped.

Victor's voice turned cool. "Careful."

"No," she replied evenly. "I'm done being careful."

Adrian stared at her.

Not angry.

Not annoyed.

Impressed.

She continued, steady and composed.

"If there are concerns about governance, launch a formal review. But suspending the CEO based on staged optics sets a dangerous precedent."

Now the board was thinking.

Not reacting.

Victor leaned back slowly.

The trap hadn't closed.

Adrian finally spoke.

"I welcome a formal audit."

Victor's eyes sharpened.

That wasn't the expected answer.

Adrian continued smoothly.

"Full transparency. Financials. Communications. Meetings."

He looked directly at Victor.

"Every detail."

The air crackled.

Victor didn't blink.

But the smile was gone.

Aftermath

The meeting ended without a vote.

No suspension. No delay.

But no victory either.

In the elevator, silence hung between them.

Then Adrian spoke quietly.

"You disobeyed me."

Zara met his gaze. "Yes."

A pause.

Then-

"You were extraordinary."

Her breath caught.

"You could have made it worse," he continued. "Instead, you shifted the narrative."

The elevator doors opened.

But neither of them moved immediately.

"Stop trying to protect me from a war I'm already standing in," she said softly.

His eyes darkened.

"You don't know what that means."

"Then show me."

Something shifted in him.

Not control.

Not dominance.

Something far more dangerous.

Need.

The doors began to close.

At the last second, Adrian pressed the emergency stop.

The elevator halted between floors.

Zara's pulse spiked.

"Adrian-"

He stepped closer.

"You stood beside me in that room," he said, voice low and intense. "Do you understand what that does to a man like me?"

Her voice softened. "What?"

"It makes him forget the rules."

His hand slid to her waist.

This wasn't strategic.

This wasn't performance.

This was real.

And just as the tension reached its breaking point -

His phone rang.

Adrian's expression changed instantly.

He answered.

"Yes."

Silence.

Then his jaw hardened.

"Where?"

Zara's stomach dropped.

He ended the call slowly.

"What happened?"

His voice was controlled.

Too controlled.

"That was security."

A beat.

"Someone just tried to access the penthouse."

The $300 Husband Is A Zillionaire Novel Cover
9.2
I woke up in a blindingly white hotel penthouse with a throbbing headache and the taste of betrayal in my mouth. The last thing I remembered was my stepsister, Cathie, handing me a flute of champagne at the charity gala with a smile that didn't reach her eyes. Now, a tall, dangerously handsome man walked out of the bathroom with a towel around his hips. On the nightstand sat a stack of hundred-dollar bills. My stepmother had finally done it-she drugged me and staged a scandal with a hired escort to destroy my reputation and my future. "Aisha! Is it true you spent the night with a gigolo?" The shouts of a dozen reporters echoed through the heavy oak door as camera flashes exploded through the peephole. My phone lit up with messages showing my bank accounts were already frozen. My father was invoking the 'morality clause' in my mother's trust fund, and my fiancé had already released a statement dumping me to marry my stepsister instead. I was trapped, penniless, and being hunted by the press for a scandal I hadn't even participated in. My own family had sold me out for a payday, and the man standing in front of me was the only witness who could prove I was innocent-or finish me off for good. I didn't have time to cry. According to the fine print of the trust, I had thirty days to prove my "rehabilitation" through a legal marriage or I would lose everything. I tracked the man down to a coffee shop the next morning, watching him take a thick envelope of cash from a wealthy older woman. I sat across from him and slid a napkin with a $50,000 figure written on it. "I need a husband. Legal, paper-signed, and convincing." He looked at the number, then at me, a slow, crooked smile spreading across his face. I thought I was hiring a desperate gigolo to save my inheritance. I had no idea I was actually proposing to Dominic Fields, the reclusive billionaire shark who was currently planning a hostile takeover of my father's entire empire.
