Chapter 3

The ATM screen blinked mockingly: "Transaction Declined. Please contact your financial institution."

I tried another card. Then another. Each rejection felt like another piece of my life crumbling away. Standing in the rain outside the bank, I finally accepted the truth—Alexander had cut off everything. Every joint account, every credit card, every safety net I'd foolishly believed would be there if I needed it.

Three days since my world imploded. Three days since I'd become London's most notorious "other woman." Three days of hiding in my Kensington flat while photographers camped outside and my bank balance dwindled to nothing.

My phone buzzed with a text from my father in Edinburgh: Come home, love. Whatever's happened, we'll figure it out together.

Home. The word felt foreign after six years of trying to make London accept me. But as I stood there in the rain with fifteen pounds to my name and nowhere else to turn, Edinburgh began to sound like salvation.

The train to Edinburgh gave me four hours to watch London disappear through rain-streaked windows. Four hours to read every cruel headline, every speculation about my "obsession" with Alexander West. Four hours to realize that the woman in those photos—desperate, devastated, pathetic—wasn't who I wanted to be anymore.

My reflection in the window showed a stranger. The perfectly styled Victoria Stone of London was gone, replaced by someone I barely recognized. My expensive dress was wrinkled, my makeup long since cried off, my hair falling in tangled waves around my shoulders.

But underneath the wreckage, something else was stirring. Something that felt almost like relief.

My phone rang as we pulled into Edinburgh. An unknown number.

"Ms. Stone? This is David Cameron from The Telegraph. We'd like to offer you the chance to tell your side of the story. Exclusive interview, very generous compensation—"

I hung up without a word.

The phone rang again immediately. Another journalist. Then another.

I turned off my phone and watched Scotland roll past the window—ancient hills and stone houses that had weathered centuries of storms. Enduring. Unchanged by scandal or gossip or the whims of powerful men.

My parents' house in Morningside looked exactly as I'd left it six years ago. Warm light glowing from the windows, my mother's garden boxes bright with late autumn flowers, the same wooden door I'd walked through as a child with scraped knees and broken dreams.

"Victoria." My father appeared in the doorway before I could knock, his arms already open. Dr. James Stone—retired professor of literature, terrible cook, the most decent man I'd ever known.

I collapsed into his embrace and finally, finally let myself cry.

"Och, lass," he murmured against my hair, his Highland accent thick with emotion. "What have they done to you?"

Inside, my mother fussed over me with tea and toast, asking no questions about the scandal that had surely reached Edinburgh by now. The house smelled like home—old books and lavender soap and the wood polish my mother used on the furniture my grandfather had made.

"I saw the news," my father said quietly as we sat by the fire. "That man—Alexander West—he's hurt you."

"He was my husband," I whispered, the secret finally free. "For three years. Secret marriage, secret life. I was just... business to him."

My father's face darkened with a fury I'd rarely seen. "And now?"

"Now he's divorcing me to marry someone else. Someone who fits his world better." I stared into the flames, watching them dance and flicker. "I lost everything, Dad. My job, my reputation, my future."

"No." His voice was firm, certain. "You lost his version of your future. That's not the same thing."

Before I could ask what he meant, my phone—still switched off—somehow managed to receive a notification. A text message had come through just before I'd turned it off, one I hadn't seen.

It was from Alexander: We need to talk. There are things you don't understand about what happened. Meet me tomorrow night. The Caledonian Hotel, Royal Suite. 8pm. Come alone.

My father, reading over my shoulder, made a sound of disgust. "Even now he's giving you orders."

But something in the message felt different. Desperate, almost. Not the cold, controlled Alexander who'd destroyed me three days ago.

"Don't go," my mother said from the doorway, her voice sharp with worry. "That man has done enough damage."

I stared at the message, my heart racing despite everything he'd put me through. What could he possibly have to say now? What explanation could justify what he'd done?

And why, despite the pain and humiliation and betrayal, did part of me still want to hear it?

"I have to," I said quietly, knowing it was probably a mistake but unable to resist the pull of unfinished business. "I need to know why."

My father's hand covered mine, warm and steady. "Then you won't go alone."

Outside, thunder rumbled across the Edinburgh sky, and I wondered if I was walking toward closure or stepping into another trap entirely.
