Chapter 3

I didn't sleep.

Not even close.

I sat on the floor of my mother's apartment until the sky outside went from black to grey, and then I got up, washed my face, and drove across the city in a dress with Noah Bennett's address pulled up on my phone and nothing else in my head except one sentence on a loop.

She left you the company.

Noah's office was on the fourteenth floor of a glass building in Midtown Manhattan. The kind of building that didn't put its business on a sign outside.

The receptionist showed me straight in.

Noah Bennett was already standing when I walked through the door. Tall, calm, somewhere in his late thirties, with steady eyes and a thick file already open on the desk between us.

"Miss White Jones," he said. "Thank you for coming."

"You said my mother left me a company," I said. "So talk."

He didn't blink at the directness, instead he gestured to the chair across from him and sat down.

I sat and put my bag on the floor. I looked at him and waited.

"Before your mother died," Noah began, "Beverley quietly purchased thirty-three percent of BW Cosmetics shares. She did it over fourteen months, through a private holding structure, in small enough amounts that it didn't trigger any public disclosure."

"She kept it completely hidden." He turned the first page of the file toward me and pointed to a line near the top. "The shares were registered under two initials. L.S."

I stared at those two letters.

"Little Star," I said.

"Your childhood nickname. She chose it intentionally. Something only you would recognize. Something Felix would never connect to you even if he somehow stumbled across the filing."

I sat with the information for a moment. My mother, in the last years of her life, had been quietly buying back pieces of her own company and hiding them under a name only I would know.

She had been thinking about me the whole time.

"And the twenty percent she gave me when I turned twenty-one," I said. "The shares from her original gift."

"Still fully yours." He clarified.

I did the math without blinking.

"Thirty-three and twenty," I said slowly.

"Is fifty-three percent," Noah said. "Majority shareholder of BW Cosmetics. The company your mother built from nothing. It belongs to you, Daisy. She made sure of it."

My palm started sweating, while I was trying to process the information then I asked the only question that mattered.

"Does my father know?"

"No."

"Does anyone else know? Anyone at all?"

"Only me. And now you."

"How long have you been sitting on this?"

"Since two months before Beverley died. She told me she no longer trusted the people around her and she needed someone completely separate to hold what she was building for you." He folded his hands on the desk. "She made me promise not to contact you until your twenty-fifth birthday. Her exact words were, 'She'll be ready by then, and she's going to need to be.'"

I pressed my fingers together in my lap to keep them still.

"We need to keep this from Felix," Noah continued, "until the next shareholders' meeting. Once you walk into that room as majority shareholder, the position is legally unassailable but if he finds out before then, he has enough connections to file injunctions, create legal delays, make noise. We cannot give him time to prepare."

"He'll fight it anyway."

"He'll try," Noah said. "He won't win but yes, he will try."

"Good." I looked at him steadily. "Let him."

"There's something else I need you to understand," he said. "About the official will."

"Tell me."

"The will that was filed after your mother's death is not the document Beverley wrote."

My heart jerked.

"Say that again," I said, quietly.

"The will filed after Beverley died was forged," Noah said, flat and clean. "Felix and Wyatt Evans worked together to replace her real will with a version that redirected her estate. The original will named you as primary heir. Her personal assets, her shares. All of it was meant for you."

"Wyatt Evans is our family lawyer," I said. "My mother trusted him for years."

"She did, and Felix used that trust. When Beverley started pulling away from Wyatt in the last months of her life, she had already suspected something was wrong. By then it was too late to undo what she had already signed her name to in front of him." Noah paused. "Which is why she came to me instead. She knew she needed someone they had never met."

I thought about Wyatt Evans. Silver-haired, polished, the kind of man who called everyone by their first name and made you feel like you were the most important person in the room. He had sat across from me at Beverley's estate review when I was nineteen and explained in a kind, patient voice why my mother's estate was structured the way it was. Why Felix would hold the primary assets. Why my trust was modest but appropriate.

He had looked me in the eye and lied.

"And Felix," I said.

"Had resented the fact that the company was hers for most of their marriage. He built his identity around being CFO of BW Cosmetics but the name above the door was never his. When Beverley died, he moved fast. Wyatt filed the forged documents before anyone could look closely."

I let out a slow breath through my nose.

Felix at the fireplace last night. That flat, patient voice.

The guest rooms are available if you need to rest before you travel tomorrow.

He had stood in that room and looked at me like I was a minor inconvenience being politely managed. All while sitting inside a company that actually belonged to me.

"Noah." I leaned forward slightly. "I need to ask you something directly."

"Ask."

"My mother was forty-three years old. No history of heart problems. No family history of cardiac anything." I held his gaze. "Did she die accidentally?"

Noah was quiet.

One second.

Two.

Three.

"The official verdict was cardiac arrest," he said finally.

"That is not an answer."

"No," he said. "It isn't."

The silence that followed was the loudest thing I had heard since Felix spoke last night.

"Read the audit file when you get back to the apartment," Noah said, his voice lower now. "All of it. Then call me." He slid a thick envelope across the desk. "Everything you need is in there. Documents, share certificates, a copy of the real will, and the financial audit your mother privately commissioned six months before she died."

I picked it up, it was heavy.

"She knew," I said. It wasn't a question.

"I think she suspected something was coming," Noah said carefully. "Which is why she spent the last months of her life making sure that if it did, you would be protected. The apartment. The hidden shares. Me." He paused. "She loved you, Daisy. Every single decision she made in those last months had your name behind it."

I didn't trust my voice.

So I just nodded, picked up my bag, tucked the envelope under my arm, and stood.

"One more thing," Noah said as I turned toward the door.

I looked back.

"Don't underestimate what you're walking into. Felix is not going to accept this quietly and Wyatt Evans has spent thirty years making problems disappear for powerful people." He held my gaze. "Be careful who you tell. Be careful who you trust and don't move until we are ready."

"Understood," I said.

And I walked out.

The corridor was wide and carpeted and quiet.

I walked toward the lifts with the envelope pressed against my side, my mind already sorting through everything Noah had just laid in front of me.

The lift doors slid open.

A man walked out directly into my path.

I stepped sideways quickly. He stopped, but he didn't move out of the way. He just stopped and let me go around him instead.

I registered him in pieces because my head was somewhere else entirely.

Tall. Dark suit, no tie, collar open just enough to look deliberate. The kind of expensive that didn't need to announce itself. And then his eyes, because his eyes were the thing that made me actually stop and look.

Cool grey. Pale and sharp and completely unreadable. They landed on my face with a focus that felt almost physical, like fingers pressing lightly against a bruise.

He wasn't looking past me.

He was looking at me with a calm attention.

I held his gaze for one second because looking away first felt like losing something I hadn't agreed to compete for.

Then his assistant, half a step behind him, spoke quietly.

"Mr. Barlow. Your nine o'clock is waiting."

Barlow.

I filed the name without reacting. Ivan Barlow. CEO of Vesper Global Beauty. The man the financial press described as the most dangerous competitor in the beauty industry. The man who had quietly dismantled three smaller companies in the last two years without apparent effort or mercy.

He was still looking at me.

"Excuse me," I said, because someone had to say something.

He said nothing.

I walked past him and stepped into the lift.

The doors closed.

I looked at my own reflection in the brushed silver panel opposite me with an envelope full of evidence that my mother's death might not have been an accident pressed hard against my ribs.

Ivan Barlow could calculate whatever he wanted.

I had bigger problems.

.........

Back at the downtown apartment I made tea I didn't drink and sat at my mother's small wooden table with the audit file open in front of me.

Thirty-seven pages. Dense numbers, internal transaction codes, dates going back eight years. I read every single page the way my mother had taught me to read anything important when I was young.

"Don't skim, Little Star. The thing they're hiding is always in the part that looks boring."

By page twelve I found the first flag.

Money had been moving out of BW Cosmetics for years. In small, careful amounts, routed through subsidiary accounts, adjusted in ways that looked like routine operating costs if you weren't reading closely enough.

Felix's name was flagged in the margin beside three separate entries. Red ink. Precise and damning.

Wyatt Evans' name appeared twice on page nineteen.

I kept reading.

Page twenty-nine.

There was a third entry.

A third name, or what should have been a name. A thick black bar covered most of the line. The kind of heavy redaction that didn't look administrative. It looked intentional like someone had gone back through this document after it was completed and removed something very specifically.

I stared at it.

Then I saw what was written in the margin beside it.

My mother's handwriting.

Not safe.

I sat at that table for a long time, looking at those two words.

My mother had been afraid.

Not of a stranger. Not of some outside threat she couldn't name. She had been afraid of someone in this document. Someone whose name appeared inside her own company's financial records and frightened her enough to write two words in the margin and hide the whole thing with a lawyer she trusted to keep it safe until I was old enough to do something about it.

The third name was still there, underneath that black bar.

And I was going to find out whose it was.
