The Broken Architect's Fiery Revenge Novel Cover

The Broken Architect's Fiery Revenge

My fiancé, Dereck, told me a construction accident had shattered my dominant hand, ending my career as an architect. But drifting in a drugged haze, I overheard the truth. It wasn't an accident. He had paid the doctor to cripple me, to make me a "broken architect" so I could never leave him. I soon discovered his real reason: a secret son with his lover, Kacey. He was building their family while destroying my life. At a party celebrating the "adoption" of his own child, Kacey framed me for an attack. Dereck and his family called me a worthless disgrace in front of everyone. He thought he had broken me. He thought he had erased me. He was wrong. I faked my own fiery death, leaving him to rot in his guilt while I prepared my revenge.

Chapter 5

Cayla Rollins POV:

Dereck' s parents, Fitzgerald and Elmire Potter, materialized beside him, their faces a mask of barely concealed disgust. Elmire glared at me, her eyes colder than ice. "Look at this disgrace. Attacking Kacey, in front of everyone. How dare she?"

Jesse, still clutching his ceremonial dagger, began to cry, running to Kacey. "Mommy! Daddy, she hurt Mommy!"

Kacey, draped dramatically in Dereck' s arms, shivered, her eyes wide and tearful. "I… I just wanted to apologize, Cayla. For taking your place in the ceremony. You know, since you couldn' t… perform the duties." Her voice was a fragile whisper, laced with a triumphant smirk only I could see.

I closed my eyes, a bitter laugh bubbling in my throat. "Is that what you call it, Kacey? 'Taking my place' ?" I turned my gaze to Dereck, my eyes boring into his. "Is that the truth, Dereck? Is that why you pushed me aside? For her? For the boy?"

His eyebrows furrowed, a flicker of fear in his eyes. "Don' t be ridiculous, Cayla. Kacey is a guest here. She' s been nothing but kind. You' re just… upset. You need to apologize."

"Apologize?" I scoffed, the word a raw wound in my throat.

"Yes, apologize!" Elmire snapped, stepping forward. "You' re a stain on our family name, Cayla. Weak. Useless. You have no place here anymore."

"Perhaps it' s time to send her away, Dereck," Fitzgerald added, his voice low and menacing. "Permanently."

A wave of nausea washed over me. My vision swam, my head pounding. The pain in my hand flared, a cruel reminder of their handiwork. My body swayed.

Dereck scooped Kacey and Jesse into his arms, turning his back on me. He walked away, leaving me alone in the center of the hall, surrounded by whispering, condemning faces.

I watched them go. The perfect family. The family he had chosen. Five years. Five years of my life, my love, my talent, all dedicated to a man who saw me as nothing more than a disposable asset.

My legs were shaking. I dragged myself back to my room, the silence a deafening roar in my ears. I opened my communicator. I booked a private transport. I secured accommodations. I was ready.

A message pinged on my screen. Dereck.

"Cayla, please don' t be angry. The ceremony, the apology… it was just for show. To pacify my parents. You know how they are. I' ll make it up to you. I have a surprise for you at the ceremony. A big one."

A surprise. I knew what his surprise would be. A final, public humiliation. A grand gesture to solidify his new life, with me as the forgotten relic. He still thought I was his pawn, his poor, broken Cayla who would cling to his every word.

I didn't reply. For the next two days, I stayed away from the Potter estate, choosing to remain in a secluded guesthouse. Dereck, too, was absent, consumed by the preparations for his grand spectacle.

The morning of the ceremony dawned, cold and grey. I made one last call to Dereck.

He picked up on the third ring, his voice distracted. "Cayla? Is everything alright? I' m a bit tied up right now." I could hear other voices, crisp and authoritative, in the background.

"Sir, the guest list for the property transfer is finalized," a subordinate' s voice echoed nearby. "Are you certain about transferring the majority of the northern properties to Kacey Acevedo' s son, Jesse?"

Dereck' s voice, sharp and impatient, cut through the background noise. "Yes, I am certain. It' s for his future. My legacy. Just ensure all documentation is properly filed." He paused, then addressed his subordinate again. "And make sure Cayla is not approached by anyone. Not until after the ceremony. We don' t need any… complications."

He finally focused on me, his tone softening slightly. "Cayla, my love, I' m so sorry. I' ve been so busy. I' ll be back the moment it' s over. I promise."

"I know," I said, my voice steady, devoid of emotion. "Congratulations, Dereck. On everything."

There was a beat of silence. "Thank you, Cayla. That' s… very understanding of you. Just wait for me at home, okay? I' ll be there as soon as I can."

The line went dead. I placed my communicator on the table. A private transport was waiting outside.

As I stepped into the vehicle, a strange sensation washed over me. The dull ache in my bandaged hand, the heavy lethargy in my limbs… it was fading. A subtle energy, a nascent power, was stirring within me.

This wasn' t an ending. It was a beginning. A new chapter. A fresh canvas.

My communicator pinged again. A notification. My departure registration was officially complete.

With a deep breath, I scrolled through my phone. Every picture of Dereck, every message, every shared memory. Deleted. All of it.
