Chapter 7

CRUELLA

“Argh!”

A raw, animal scream tore out of me as my spine snapped out of place. Fire shot through every bone in my body.

“Make it stop! Please!” I didn’t even recognize my own voice anymore—hoarse, guttural, trembling.

My bones twisted again—crack, pop, crack—and I slammed my palm against the floor. I was shaking so hard I couldn’t even lift my head. I could barely see through the blur of tears as the girls backed away from me.

I heard one of Maeve’s minions whisper, “Come on Maeve, let’s get out of here.”

Her voice wavered like she was seconds from fainting.

But Maeve… no. Maeve wasn’t afraid enough to walk away.

“After all she did to you, you’re just going to let her be? You’re an even bigger coward,” she hissed, and her footsteps crept closer.

Another bone shifted in my arm, stretching it unnaturally. My vision pulsed white. I tasted blood.

“Maeve, now isn’t the time for revenge. Let’s fucking get out of here!” her friend begged, clutching her broken wrist.

“She’ll still come after us later. Let's end it here and now.” Maeve grabbed my hair and yanked my head up. Pain shot through my skull, but the agony inside me was worse—blinding, rising, unstoppable.

“Listen to me, bitch,” Maeve spat into my face. “I don’t know what the hell happened to you in that fire, but just because you're a little stronger doesn’t mean you’re useful. You’ll always be a worthless slut.”

Her slap snapped my head sideways. I collapsed, nails scraping the floor as they lengthened into claws.

Maeve didn’t even notice.

“And yes,” she sneered, “we were the ones who locked you in that building. We only wanted you to miss the test—didn’t know there’d be a gas leak. But guess what? I have no regrets.”

She kicked my stomach.

“Arhhh!” The scream ripped out of me—but not from her kick. My ribs shifted beneath my skin again.

I looked up… and that’s when I saw it.

The moon.

Full. Bright. Watching me.

Perfect timing.

“Maeve, please!” another girl begged. “Let’s leave! This isn’t normal!”

But Maeve kept hitting me.

Until…

I opened my mouth—and what came out wasn’t human.

A growl. Deep. Violent. Not mine.

My eyes burned gold.

Maeve froze.

The girls screamed as my body completed its transformation.

Fur burst across my skin—white, soft, glowing like snow under moonlight. My nose darkened. My jaw stretched and snapped forward, shaping itself into a wolf’s muzzle. My teeth grew long and razor sharp. My ears lengthened, covered in fur. My entire body expanded, towering over them.

And then…

It was done.

I stood in the center of the room as a huge white wolf.

In Greenville, this would’ve been beautiful. Sacred. Celebrated.

But right here?

To four trembling human girls—

I was dead.

I let out a low, rumbling growl, baring my fangs.

This was my first shift.

My first real taste of power.

Gerald’s blood had awakened the curse inside me. A hybrid wolf-vampire didn’t shift at eighteen—we shifted when we killed our first innocent.

And tonight the moon blessed me.

“Run!” the girl with the broken wrist screamed.

No one even moved.

I was already blocking the door.

The sight of them shaking made something dark inside me… smile.

“Please,” one girl whimpered, falling to her knees. “I don’t want to die. My mum is late. My dad works day and night. I take care of my siblings. Please don’t kill me.”

Pathetic. Sweet. Terrified.

Perfect.

I lunged—and in one swift bite, her upper body vanished between my jaws.

Her lower half stayed kneeling for a moment… then toppled over.

I spat her out. Her blood tasted wrong. Weak. She wasn’t the one I wanted.

I wanted Maeve.

The girl with the broken wrist lifted a lamp holder at me.

“Stay back!” she stuttered.

Ridiculous.

With a single swipe of my paw, she split clean in half.

Maeve stood frozen like her soul had left her body. Her lips trembled. Tears slid silently down her cheeks.

She looked like a child lost in a nightmare.

And finally… she understood.

I tore into the third girl next, breaking every bone in her fragile human body before tossing her aside.

Then it was just Maeve.

She squeezed her eyes shut. “This is a bad dream. This is a bad dream. Please… let me wake up…”

The room fell silent.

No movement.

No breath except hers—shallow, panicked.

I let the wolf fade.

My bones cracked again—this time reforming. My fur receded. My body shrank until I was kneeling on the bloody floor in my human form, naked, smirking.

“What? You thought I’d give you an easy ending?” I asked softly. “Where’s the fun in that?”

Maeve’s eyes widened. Color drained from her face.

“You’re… you’re not real,” she whispered.

I laughed and began circling her, letting my fangs slide down fully.

“Oh Maeve… I’m very real.”

“I’m sorry,” she sobbed. “I didn’t mean to— I didn’t know Swayer was in there— I didn’t know about the leak—”

“Don’t say her name!” I roared, slamming my hand against the wall beside her.

She screamed.

“I-I’m sorry! I won’t say her name again!”

I leaned close, brushing her hair aside, exposing her neck.

“You should’ve behaved like this before,” I murmured. “Humble. Quiet. Weak. Too bad—it’s too late now.”

“Please don’t kill me,” she begged, hands trembling.

“Oh, Maeve,” I whispered, “I’m not going to kill you. Not yet. First, I’m going to drink every drop of blood in that black heart of yours.”

Her eyes widened in horror just as my fangs plunged deep into her neck.

Maeve shrieked. Her legs kicked weakly. Her hands clawed at my shoulders.

But she couldn’t move me.

Her blood…

Sweet. Warm.

God, it was better than sex.

When her body went limp, I let go—and snapped her neck with a single twist.

Silence.

My eyes faded from red back to blue.

“Revenge really does feel wonderful,” I whispered.

I stood, glanced at the bodies, and realized I was naked. Whatever. The clothes were soaked in blood. I walked to the window, broke the glass with my bare hand, and climbed out.

No cuts. No fear.

Just purpose.

My next target was very clear.

Ethan.

And he wouldn’t be as lucky as Maeve.
