The Claw's Penalty: She Survived to Rule Them All Novel Cover

The Claw's Penalty: She Survived to Rule Them All

"I want an annulment." To escape my five-year hell of a marriage to Alpha Kaden, I agreed to the "Claw's Penalty"—thirty lashes. That was preferable to watching my husband coddle his mistress, Brittaney, while I slowly died of neglect. But Kaden wouldn't let me leave with dignity. When Brittaney's gene-mod hound bit me, Kaden used his Alpha Command to force me into the gravel to apologize to the dog. When Brittaney poisoned herself with wolfsbane to frame me, Kaden pistol-whipped me and let a torturer jam silver needles under my fingernails. He called me a "guilt-trip" left by his father, a slave with a title. The final straw came when Brittaney faked a fall from a horse. Kaden didn't ask questions. He kicked in my ribs and ordered "The Quartering"—execution by silver chains. As my joints popped and the silver burned my skin, he roared, "I protect this family!" He didn't know I was the family's only hope. His mother intervened just in time, cutting me down and handing me the signed annulment papers. I left that night, and the mate bond didn't just break; it vanished into silence. Kaden thought he had broken a weak Omega. He didn't realize that by shattering the bond, he had unlocked my true form. Six months later, I returned not as his wife, but as the legendary White Wolf. And Kaden was waiting in a cage to beg for a forgiveness I no longer possessed.

Chapter 3

POV: Harlow Love

Dawn broke grey and brutal. I was a statue of ice and pain.

"Get up."

Kaden stood there in a tailored suit. He looked at me with a flicker of guilt that he quickly buried under annoyance.

I tried to move. My leg was a stiff log of agony. The wound had clotted, but the skin around it was angry and red.

"We have errands," he said. "Brittaney needs a dress for the Gala."

"I can't walk," I rasped.

He grabbed my arm, hauling me up. The Mate spark zapped us both. He flinched, then gripped harder.

"You will walk. Stand."

The Command forced my legs to work against the pain.

The mall was a blur of lights and noise. I was a ghost trailing behind them, my limp pronounced, sweat slicking my back despite the air conditioning. My fever was spiking.

Brittaney bought everything she touched. She piled boxes into my arms until my muscles spasmed.

"Careful, Harlow," she smirked. "Don't drop the Italian leather."

By the time we returned to the villa, I was seeing double.

"Laundry room," Brittaney ordered, pointing to a pile of silk. "Hand wash. Now."

I stumbled down to the basement. The cold water in the basin felt like ice against my fever-hot skin. I dipped a red dress into the water. The room tilted. The concrete floor rushed up to meet me.

I woke up to the beep of monitors. The pack hospital.

"He brought you in," the nurse whispered, adjusting my IV. "You were burning up. Infection."

Before I could feel hope, the door banged open.

Kaden marched in. He wasn't holding flowers. He was holding a silver revolver.

He pressed the barrel to my forehead. The metal was cool against my feverish skin.

"What did you use?" he hissed.

"Kaden?"

"Wolfsbane! Brittaney put on the dress you washed. She's in the ICU. You poisoned her!"

"No!" I sobbed. "I didn't!"

"Liar. You're useless, and now you're a murderer."

He pulled the hammer back. Click.

Eric chose to help her by putting our engagement on hold to honor his friendship. He tossed a "Sperm Donation and Joint Custody Agreement" in front of me, his tone cold and weary. "It's just about your insecurity, right? I added your name. All the property goes to you. Satisfied now? Sign it quick! Laurie's body couldn't wait for the optimal fertility window." I signed my name on the agreement calmly, then packed my sketchbooks without a word. Eric finally let out a sigh of relief, his face showing pure ease. He stepped closer to hug me, but I dodged away. "Once the child arrived and got on the birth certificate, we would marry right away. If you wanted, we could raise him together later. I would tell him you were a mom too." I tucked away that thin agreement and watched him indifferently as he started planning the nursery with excitement. He had no idea I had already arranged with his good buddy to get our marriage license next week.
