The Debt Collector's Bride

Sera Hale is a young art student living a completely sheltered life, unaware of her father's dangerous secrets. When her father's debt is called in by the ruthless mafia boss, Damien Vescari, Sera is suddenly kidnapped and forced into marriage. She's terrified of Damien, especially because she suspects he was involved in her mother's death. Sera doesn't realize the shocking truth: Damien was her anonymous online soulmate from years ago-the boy she fell in love with before her father suddenly cut her off. Damien has been searching for her ever since. Now, he finally has her, but their reunion is a nightmare. She sees him only as a kidnapper, and her love is replaced by fear. As Sera fights for her freedom, she discovers that their past is tangled up in dangerous secrets.

Chapter 1

SERA:

There was only one place in this whole world where I felt like I could truly breathe. It was my small art studio. I had begged my father to rent it for me. The windows were filled with soft sunlight, and the air smelled like paint. The silence was gentle, allowing me to pretend that my real life wasn't a nightmare waiting outside.

With a brush in my hand and my bare feet on the paint-stained floor, I wasn't the feared Sera Hale, the daughter of a man who did terrible things.

I was simply a girl who loved bright colors more than she loved rules. I dipped my brush into the color blue... the perfect color of peace... and painted the sky I truly wished I could live under.

But peace was never a real thing for me. I used to believe that monsters only lived inside old stories. Then a real monster used a gun to shoot his way into my life.

My mother died when I was nine years old. A bullet took her life. It happened the same night men screamed my father's name from the street outside our home. All I remember is her pulling me to the floor quickly, and then the sound of darkness breaking through glass.

Dad always blamed his enemies. I blamed the whole world for the violence. But sometimes, when it was cold and late at night, a terrible thought would creep into my mind...

What if her death wasn't an accident at all? What if someone came specifically for us? What if they try to come again?

My phone buzzed on the stool next to me. It was Dad calling. I stared at the screen until it stopped ringing. Fear lived in our house like another person... quiet during the day, but angry and mean after the sun went down. I always tried to pretend I didn't notice the signs: the secret calls, the men with guns in the hallways, and the harsh way my father warned me not to ask too many questions.

I wanted a life far away from all of that noise and blood.

A life where only paint could ever stain my hands. A life where being loved wasn't another word for being in danger. I didn't realize that danger already had a beating heart. And it was getting closer to me.

  DAMIEN:

It is easy to wash blood from your hands. It is impossible to wash away regret.

My men dragged in the weak man who tried to steal from me. He cried, he begged, and he swore he had a family. They were just excuses, just noise. They meant nothing.

My world was built on very strict rules. If you break them, you die.

I stood above him in the warehouse, the floor cold under my boots. My gun was still warm in my hand. My guards waited for my command. Their eyes showed only fear... that was the only language I allowed them to speak.

"Make sure no one ever finds him," I said.

Another life gone. Another problem finished.

This was what it meant to have power.. you had to take it, not wait for someone to give it to you. But even after all the people I had buried... there was one memory that would not die.

In my office, I opened a locked drawer. Inside was a small, old silver phone... the only thing I never changed. I opened the only text message thread on it. There was no name, just a childhood nickname I had typed a long time ago :

  Cherry

"I'll find you again one day. I promise."

The message still glowed, like a ghost on the screen.

She disappeared before I could ever keep that promise. She was stolen by the world I am still fighting to control. Every city I captured, every man I destroyed.. deep down, I was always searching for her. She was the only gentle thing my heart had ever known.

"We found her," Luca said from the doorway.

For one long moment, the world stopped moving.

  Cherry... Alive.... Here.

I could finally reach her. I shut the phone and put it back in the drawer.

"Bring her to me," I ordered

The world hid her from me long enough.

  *********

  FATE:

Two lives. Both tied to violence in very different ways.

One is desperately trying to run from her past.

One is fiercely hunting for his future.

They have no idea how quickly love can turn into a terrible war. And how their two worlds are about to crash into each other.

  Sera is painting sunlight.

  Damien is walking into darkness.

They are two halves of a past that neither remembers completely...

  But one man remembers everything.

  Because obsession never forgets.

  Because promises cannot be broken.

Because fate always wins in the end.

  And tonight?

The girl who is terrified of monsters... is about to meet the man who created them all.

My fiancé sent me a text ordering me to serve his mistress, unaware that the waitress holding the tray was actually the daughter of the man who owned his soul. I was working undercover at his club, playing the role of a poor nobody to test his character before our wedding. But tonight, the test ended in disaster. His mistress, Jaden, walked in and treated me like dirt. When I brought her drink, she slapped the tray, spilling scalding coffee all over my hand. The pain was white-hot. My skin blistered instantly, peeling away in angry red patches. I showed Connor the injury on a video call, expecting protection. Expecting him to be a man. Instead, he looked at my burned hand and then at his investors. Panic filled his eyes. "Fix it, Blake," he roared. "Apologize to her." "She burned me," I said quietly. "I don't care! Kneel if you have to. Kiss her ring. Just make her happy so I can finish this deal!" He told the Principessa of the Shaw crime family to kneel to a woman who meant nothing. He sacrificed his future wife to save face. Something inside me snapped. It wasn't my heart; it was the leash I had placed on myself. "Okay," I whispered. I hung up the phone and dropped it into a pot of boiling pasta water. Then I turned to the Executive Chef, a former hitman who recognized the lethal shift in my eyes. "Lock the doors," I ordered. "And tell my father I'm ready to burn this place to the ground."
