Chapter 2

The wine arrived in crystal glasses that caught the candlelight like trapped stars. Steve watched the waiter pour with the kind of precision that suggested the bottle cost more than his weekly grocery budget. He did not touch his glass.

Lois drank immediately. A long sip. The kind of sip people take when they need courage.

"You're quiet," Steve said.

"I'm thinking."

"About what?"

She set the glass down and looked at him, and for just a moment, one fraction of a second, he saw something human in her eyes. Something that might have been guilt. It vanished so quickly he would later wonder if he imagined it.

"Steve, I need you to listen to me. Really listen."

"I'm listening."

"We've been together for two years."

"Two years and three months."

She smiled, but it didn't reach her eyes. "You always remember the details."

"I remember everything about you, Lois."

That flicker again. Guilt, or its shadow. She traced the rim of her glass with one finger, a habit she had when she was stalling. He had memorized every one of her habits. The way she tucked her hair behind her left ear when she was nervous. The way she bit the inside of her cheek before saying something difficult. The way she always put her left shoe on first, every single morning.

Two years and three months of loving someone who existed at the center of his universe.

"I care about you," she said.

"I love you," he replied, because he never understood the difference between those two sentences until this exact moment.

She flinched. Actually flinched. Like the word was a physical thing that struck her.

"Steve..."

"Whatever it is, just say it."

She opened her mouth, but before any words came out, a shadow fell across the table. The man in the charcoal suit had crossed the restaurant floor with the silent confidence of someone who had never been denied entry to anything in his life. He was tall. Broad-shouldered. Jaw carved from genetics and personal trainers. A watch on his wrist that probably cost more than the restaurant itself.

He placed his hand on Lois's shoulder with a familiarity that made Steve's stomach drop through the floor.

"Babe," the man said, "the table's ready upstairs. The private dining room."

Babe.

Steve stared at the hand on her shoulder. Then at Lois's face. Then back at the hand.

"Who is this?" Steve's voice came out steady, which surprised him because everything inside was suddenly in free fall.

Lois stood up. She did not look at Steve when she stood. She looked at the man, and the expression on her face was one Steve had never seen directed at anyone but himself.

Adoration. Pure, unfiltered adoration. Mixed with relief. Like she had been holding her breath for months and finally remembered how to exhale.

"Steve, this is Hayes Beauregard."

The name landed like a brick. Hayes Beauregard. Son of Richard Beauregard, founder of Beauregard Capital. A family whose net worth was measured in the billions. A name that appeared on buildings and scholarship funds and the kind of news articles that Steve scrolled past because they described a world that had nothing to do with his.

Hayes looked at Steve with an expression of mild curiosity, the way someone might examine a stain on an otherwise clean countertop.

"So this is the boyfriend?" Hayes said it to Lois, not to Steve. As though Steve were an object being discussed rather than a person sitting three feet away.

"The ex-boyfriend," Lois said.

The word "ex" hit Steve somewhere below the ribs. He had not been warned. There had been no conversation. No fight. No tearful discussion at two in the morning. Just that word, dropped like a grenade in a restaurant full of people who were already starting to look.

"Lois." His voice cracked. He hated himself for it. "What is this?"

She turned to him then. Finally. And the guilt was gone. Replaced by something harder. Something she had clearly been rehearsing.

"I tried, Steve. I really did. But I can't keep pretending that this is enough. That we're going somewhere. You work three jobs and you still can't afford dinner. You're twenty-four and you have nothing. No car, no savings, no plan that actually leads anywhere."

Every word was a surgical cut. Precise. Practiced.

"I need more than potential. I need someone who can actually provide."

"Provide," Steve repeated. The word tasted like ash.

"She deserves better," Hayes said, sliding his hand from her shoulder to the small of her back. A possessive gesture. A claiming. "No offense, man. It's just reality."

Steve stood up. His chair scraped against the marble floor with a sound that made half the restaurant turn. He was shaking. Not with anger, though the anger was there, building like pressure behind a dam. He was shaking because the one person he had trusted with the broken, vulnerable, honest version of himself had just weaponized every insecurity he had ever confessed to her.

He looked at Lois and searched for the woman who had held him after his panic attack last spring. The woman who had whispered "I believe in you" against his chest in his terrible apartment on his floor mattress at three in the morning. The woman who had kissed his knuckles when they were raw from washing dishes and told him that his hands were going to build something incredible one day.

She was gone. Or maybe she had never existed.

"Two years," he said quietly. "And you couldn't even tell me in private?"

"I wanted you to see." Her voice was steady now. Cold. "I wanted you to understand that this is real. That I'm not coming back."

"How long?"

"Three months."

Three months. She had been with Hayes for three months. A quarter of a year. Ninety days of lying beside Steve, kissing Steve, telling Steve that she loved him while someone else's name lived in her phone under God knows what contact name.

Something shattered inside him. Not dramatically. Not with noise. It was the quiet kind of breaking, the kind that happens so deep down that the surface barely ripples.

He turned to leave.

"Steve, wait."

He stopped. Not because he wanted to, but because some pathetic, bruised part of him still responded to her voice like a dog responds to its owner.

"Your shirt," she said. "The one I bought you. It looks good. You should keep it."

Hayes laughed. A short, careless sound. The sound of a man who had never lost anything and found other people's losses amusing.

Steve walked out of Lumière with his spine straight and his jaw locked and his fingernails cutting crescents into his palms. He made it exactly eleven steps past the valet stand before his legs gave out and he sat on the curb between a Bentley and a Mercedes, two cars that cost more than he would earn in a decade, and he pressed his forehead to his knees and let the city swallow the sound of everything collapsing inside him.

He did not cry. He was past crying. He was in that place beyond tears where the body simply stops cooperating with grief and goes numb instead.

His phone buzzed. Then again. Then continuously, a cascade of vibrations that felt like insects crawling against his thigh.

He pulled it out.

Notifications. Dozens of them. Someone inside the restaurant had recorded the entire thing. Lois standing up. Hayes's hand on her back. Steve's face, pale and gutted, in high-definition clarity. The video was already on Twitter. Already being shared. Already accumulating the particular brand of digital cruelty that the internet dispenses like a vending machine.

"Dude just got dumped at Lumière for a billionaire lmaooo."

"She upgraded. Can you blame her?"

"That's cold but honestly... she's right. What was he offering?"

Steve watched himself become a spectacle in real time. His humiliation, packaged and distributed for entertainment. His worst moment, served up for strangers to consume with their evening scroll.

He sat on that curb for forty-three minutes.

When he finally stood, the numbness had settled into something permanent. Something that would live in the marrow of his bones for weeks and months to come.

He walked to the subway. He rode home. He climbed the stairs to his apartment because the elevator had been broken since September. He unlocked his door. He walked inside.

And he sat in the dark, alone, with seventeen dollars to his name and absolutely no reason to believe that tomorrow would be any different.
