Chapter 6

ELENA'S POV

The words hung between us, sharp and heavy.

"If you really want to prove yourself here, Elena, you'll do it as my assistant."

My chest tightened. His assistant? The man I was supposed to stand beside as an equal wanted me to serve under him. It wasn't just a job offer; it was a leash. A way to keep me close, contained, under his eye. The challenge in his gaze was unmistakable.

Go on. Accept it. I dare you.

My fists clenched at my sides. He was used to people bowing down, used to obedience without question. But I wasn't the type to fold, not for my aunt, not for Tiffany, and certainly not for him.

A slow smile tugged at my lips, sharper than a blade. I met his eyes, letting him see the fire I refused to put out.

"Fine," I said evenly. "I'll be your assistant. But understand something, Lucas. This isn't me working for you. It's me working with you until I've learned what I need to. I don't back down from a challenge."

For the briefest moment, his lips curved into a smirk, genuine amusement glinting in his eyes. Somehow, that was more unnerving than his earlier glare.

"Bold words, Elena," he said softly. "Let's see if you can live up to them."

He moved back to his desk, grabbed a thick stack of files, and dropped them onto the polished surface with a dull thud.

"Your first task. Review, categorize, and file every contract in this stack before the day is over. They should've been handled yesterday, but John is... lacking."

My stomach dipped at the sheer size of the pile. At least a hundred documents, maybe more. "All of them? Today?"

Lucas leaned back in his chair, folding his arms with calm authority. "I don't pay people to waste my time. You said you could handle the job. Now handle it. If you need anything, ask John. He's my actual assistant."

The deliberate emphasis on "actual" wasn't lost on me. It was a jab, meant to cut. A test, meant to break me.

But I wouldn't break.

I gathered the files in my arms, their weight pressing down like the challenge he'd just hurled my way. "Consider it done." Without waiting for his reaction, I turned on my heel and strode out, my head high.

The corridors blurred around me, my heartbeat quick and fierce. Anger simmered in my veins, but beneath it was something else. Adrenaline, determination, the same fire I'd thought long extinguished.

In the mirrored elevator, I caught sight of my reflection. My cheeks were flushed, my eyes blazing.

This time, no one was going to take my fight from me.

Lucas thought he had me cornered, but he'd only given me a new reason to rise.

LUCAS'S POV

I watched her leave, a ghost of a smirk tugging at my mouth. Defiance. Most people cracked under pressure. They faltered, stammered, begged for leniency.

But not Elena. She had met my challenge head-on.

Leaning back, I replayed the fire in her eyes, the stubborn lift of her chin. She was unlike anyone I'd ever dealt with. I prided myself on reading people easily, but she was a puzzle I couldn't solve.

What are you doing, Lucas?

I already had a perfectly capable assistant. John was loyal, discreet, efficient. Elena was none of those things. At least, not yet. She'd fight me at every turn. Strangely, the thought exhilarated me.

I moved to the window, the city stretching beneath me like a kingdom under my command. Everything was mine. Controlled. Ordered. Predictable.

Until her.

I ran a hand through my hair and exhaled. She had walked in and, without meaning to, tipped my entire world off balance.

A knock pulled me from my thoughts. "Come in."

John entered with his usual nervous composure. "Sir, I'll clear away the interview files. Do you need anything else?"

I studied him, loyal but replaceable. "No. Just coffee. And, John, about Ms. Hayes."

He paused, attentive.

"Leave her task alone. Don't help her. Not with a single page."

His brows rose. "Sir, those contracts aren't due until next Friday. She has an entire week."

"Then I suppose I was mistaken," I replied coolly. No apology. No change of plan. "She'll finish them today."

John's lips parted as if to argue, but he caught the glint in my eyes and thought better of it. He gave a curt nod.

As he left, I glanced at the stack of contracts again, a spark of curiosity flickering. Would she rise to the impossible, or crumble?

Either way, I would enjoy finding out.

ELENA'S POV

The elevator chimed softly, and I stepped out into the lobby where Melody waited. Her eyes lit up when she saw me, but her smile faltered at the sight of the files stacked in my arms.

"Well?" she asked quickly. "How did it go?"

"He hired me," I said, my voice sharper than I intended. "As his personal assistant."

Melody blinked, her brows pulling together. "His assistant? Elena, that's not what you wanted."

"I know." I shifted the heavy files in my arms. "But he gave me a chance, and I'll take it. I'll prove him wrong, no matter what he throws my way."

"What's your first assignment?"

I dropped the files onto the nearest desk. The sound echoed through the lobby. "All of these. Reviewed, categorized, and filed. By the end of today."

Her jaw nearly hit the floor. "That's... insane. There's no way-"

"There's always a way," I cut in, already flipping open the first folder. "He thinks this will break me. It won't. I'll show him I'm not just a spoiled girl playing at work. I'll show him I belong here."

Melody hovered beside me, worry clouding her features. "Elena..."

But I was already lost in the papers, my focus locked sharp. For once, the fight wasn't about Tiffany or my aunt. It wasn't about survival.

It was about proving to Lucas, and to myself, that I was more than he thought.

I wasn't just in this. I was going to win.

At dinner, he ordered me the seafood risotto, completely forgetting my deadly shellfish allergy, while fussing over Isobel’s water temperature. When I tried to leave, he cornered me.
