Too Late Mr. Sterling: You Lost Me Novel Cover

Too Late Mr. Sterling: You Lost Me

I was the perfect fiancée to Archer Sterling, a tech mogul who demanded I be as polished as his marble countertops. I gave up my art and my identity to fit his world, believing our upcoming wedding was the start of our forever. A mysterious text led me to a hidden folder in a calculator app on Archer’s phone. Inside were photos of him with his assistant, Mia, and texts calling me a "dead fish" and "manageable" collateral for his upcoming IPO. The humiliation peaked at my final bridal fitting. Archer ditched me for a hotel tryst with Mia, leaving me to overhear the salon staff mocking me as a "clueless gold digger." When I collapsed in the hallway, barefoot and broken, Archer didn't offer a hand. He only scolded me for "making a scene" and ordered me to be "supportive" of his busy schedule. The seven years I spent molding myself into his ideal woman were a lie. I wasn't his partner; I was a character in a play he wrote for his investors. My love had been met with calculated contempt, and my sacrifices were treated as his due. That night, I found Mia’s silk stockings shoved in my guest bathroom. The scent of her perfume in my home was the final breaking point. When Archer tried to touch me, my skin crawled with a physical rejection I couldn't mask. I locked the door, shredded the stockings, and called the one man Archer feared: Julian Van Der Bilt. "Does your offer for help include getting me out of here?" I asked. "Pack a bag," Julian’s voice rumbled through the dark. "I'll be there in twenty minutes. Don't let him see you leave."

Chapter 5

Harper stood frozen, her hands clutching the lapels of the stranger's charcoal gray suit. The fabric was soft, cashmere blend. She realized with a jolt of horror that she was standing in a public hallway, barefoot, wearing a wedding dress, crying, clinging to a man she didn't know.

She tried to step back, but her right ankle gave way. A sharp bolt of pain shot up her leg.

"Ah!" She winced, stumbling.

The man moved instantly, not to grab her, but to offer his forearm like a railing. "Lean on me," he commanded. It wasn't a suggestion.

"I... I think I twisted it," Harper stammered. She tried to wipe her eyes, smearing mascara across her cheek. "I'm sorry. I wasn't looking."

Behind the man, three other men in suits had stopped. They didn't gawk. They didn't whisper. With military precision, they turned their backs to the scene, forming a human wall that shielded Harper from the view of the elevators and the lobby. It was a gesture of supreme discretion.

The tall man didn't kneel. That would be a scene. Instead, he looked down at her foot with a clinical, assessing gaze.

"It's swelling," he observed, his voice calm amidst her storm. He signaled to one of the men without looking away from Harper. "Call the salon manager. Tell her to bring flats. Immediately."

The elevator doors behind them chimed. Ding.

"Harper!"

The voice was breathless and angry. Harper flinched.

Archer came storming out of the elevator. His tie was loosened, his hair slightly disheveled. He looked like a man who had run from a car. Or a hotel room.

He saw them. Harper in the dress, the stranger standing guard beside her.

"What the hell is going on?" Archer shouted. He marched toward them, his face flushing red. "Harper, why are you out here? You're barefoot!"

The stranger stood up straighter, if that was possible.

He unfolded his height until he was looming over Archer. He stepped in front of Harper, blocking Archer's path. It was a subtle movement, but it was aggressive. A shield.

"She's hurt," the stranger said. His voice dropped an octave. It was cold now. Dangerous.

Archer stopped, taken aback by the wall of man in front of him. "Excuse me? Who are you? Get away from my fiancée."

He reached around the stranger to grab Harper's arm. "Harper, come here. You're making a scene."

The stranger didn't shove Archer. He just shifted his weight, putting his shoulder between Archer's hand and Harper's arm. Archer grabbed empty air.

"I said," the stranger repeated, enunciating every syllable, "she is hurt."

Harper peered around the broad back of the man protecting her. She looked at Archer. She saw the sweat on his forehead. And then she saw it.

On the collar of his white shirt. It wasn't a smudge. It was a deliberate mark. A perfect kiss print in bright red lipstick on the inside of his collar, visible only because his tie was askew. Mia's shade.

She felt the nausea return.

The stranger seemed to sense her distress. He glanced back at her, just for a second. His eyes softened. "Do you want to go with him?"

The question hung in the air. It was the first time anyone had asked her what she wanted in a long time.

Archer scoffed. "Of course she's coming with me. We have a wedding to plan. Harper, stop acting like a child and get in the car."

Child. Manageable. Dead fish.

Harper looked at the stranger's back. It was straight, unyielding.

"He's right," Harper said, her voice hollow. "I have to go."

She didn't want to cause a fight. Not here. Not now. She was too tired.

The stranger looked at her. He held her gaze for a long beat. He looked disappointed. Not angry, just... sad.

"Very well," he said. He stepped aside.

But as he did, he turned his cold gaze back to Archer. "Walk her. Don't drag her."

I was tightening my husband’s tie for the photographers at the gala when my phone buzzed against my thigh. A single notification stopped my heart dead. Julius had just wired five million dollars—capital I had secretly stolen from my father to build his company—to an account named 'K. Drake'. When I confronted him later that night, he didn't apologize. Instead, he lured me to an empty warehouse and detonated a rigged gas line. I woke up in a hospital bed, my body broken and my mind racing. Julius stood over me, checking his watch, looking terrifyingly calm. "The baby is gone," he said dismissively, referring to the pregnancy I hadn't even told him about yet. "But Kenzie needs a bone marrow transplant. You're a match." He was holding our daughter, Ava, hostage. He told me if I didn't give his mistress my marrow, I’d never see my child again. He looked at me with total contempt. To him, I was just a boring, civilian housewife. A prop he had used and was now ready to discard. He had no idea who I really was. He didn't know that the "bank loans" I secured for him were actually laundered syndicate money. He didn't know that the father I "didn't talk to" was Horacio Horton, the most feared Don on the East Coast. I let them take the marrow. I let them believe they had broken me. Then, as soon as Julius left the room, I reached for the phone and dialed a number I hadn't used in ten years. "Papa," I whispered into the receiver. "Send the army." The civilian Florence died in that bed. The Mob Princess had just returned to take her throne.

I was tracing the gold paint on my own tombstone when a hand tapped me on the shoulder. It was Clayton. The same man who, five years ago, had left me bleeding out in a ditch because he didn't want to be late for my sister’s engagement party. "Die quietly, Ivy," he had said over the phone before hanging up. Now, standing over my grave, he dropped his cheap plastic flowers in shock. "Ivy? You're... we buried you." They hadn't buried me. They had buried an empty box to save face, mourning a "troubled" daughter they had actually discarded like broken trash the moment I became a liability. Clayton’s shock quickly turned to that familiar, arrogant anger. He accused me of faking my death for attention. He told me I was sick for putting the family through such pain. He even reached out to grab my arm, intending to drag me back to my father to apologize. "You're coming with me," he spat. "You owe us an explanation." But he made a fatal mistake. He thought he was talking to Ivy Dillard, the soft girl who cried when she skinned her knees. He didn't notice the town car waiting at the curb, or the man stepping out of it. Before Clayton’s fingers could graze my coat, a hand made of steel caught his wrist. Collin Richardson, the most feared Capo in Chicago, stepped between us. "Touch my wife again," Collin whispered, his voice promising violence. "And you lose the hand." I smiled at the terror draining the color from Clayton's face. I didn't come back from the dead to explain myself. I came back to bury them.
