Chapter 1

ALESSA POV

“Ohh sweet Alessa, I am so glad you are here.” Nurse Mary said, she was all smiles as she saw me.

I smiled back in return. She hurriedly pulled off my white coat and helped me with the scrub(surgeon uniform)

“I am so sorry for ruining your wedding anniversary date, it's just that the lady's twins were coming out prematurely.”

I smiled, “Its fine my husband called and said he was busy too”

“Ohh..Miss Smith, it's crazy in there. The lady's husband has been screaming all day. He loves his wife so much. They are all lovey dovey, so rare for a couple who have known each other for 13 years.”

“Really? That is sweet.” I said with a smile, seeing people loving each other publicly makes me happy.

“The Lady showed us her wedding photo in Las Vegas.” The nurse added, she was all hyper for the gossip.

I smiled, “Wow, that's crazy.”

5 mins later, I was ready. She opened the OR door, and I slid in with my hands up.

“Hello Doctor Smith,” My male OR assistant said.

I nodded my head. The nurse in there covered my hands with gloves. While my eyes were on that big protruding stomach. It was very big, facing up. My heart was filled with jealousy. I always wished one day my stomach would be as big as that. And I will have a child, I always envied such women.

I moved closer to the woman, she was putting on a face mask, and a hair net.

I bent to her ears and whispered, "Don't worry madam, I will make sure you give birth to your babies strong and healthy.”

I raised my hand, “Scalpel!”

*****________**********

An hour later.

“Well done, Doctor,” the team said as they peeled off their gloves. I forced a small smile, the kind of smile I’d learned to wear after long, grueling surgeries. We are all relieved as we saw the babies save and sound.

I slipped out of the OR, exhausted down to.my bones. My assistant had already gone ahead to inform the father. I half-expected to see him waiting anxiously at the door, pale and restless like so many others.

Instead, the sight before me stopped me cold.

Adrian!! My husband!! What was he doing.here?

He stood there in the corridor, his hand gripping my assistant’s shoulders as he shook him gratefully.

His voice was low and trembling with emotion.

“Thank you for saving my children.”

The words punched the air out of me. My heart slammed against my ribs, every drop of blood in my body turning to ice.

Children? What children? We had.no.child!

My gaze blurred, my legs refusing to move. The betrayal hitting sharper than any pain I had ever felt in my.entire life. My chest rose and fell too fast, my teeth chattering from a sudden cold. I wanted to run to him- ask him to explain himself. Explain why can't he love me like he loves her?

No!! i lied!! but the truth was I just wanted to drag him down and slit his throat on the spot. Upon all the love I showed him, he had the guts to betray me?

My Assistant pointed at me, “The Doctor is out, you can.thank her.”

And in that frozen moment, his eyes finally lifted, and locked with mine. He was all smiles walking to me.

He stretched his hand toward me, his voice thick with gratitude. He was all.smiles like a good person.

“Thank you very much, Doctor. I will…”

But I couldn’t let him finish. My legs were already trembling, the air in my lungs burning. I had to run away before I would stab him with my scalpel. My hands were already shivering to grab the scalpeI. I turned sharply, my back to him before his hand could touch mine.

My vision clouded, and the tears I had been holding back threatened to pour. I struggled to move my weak feet faster. It was so hard to control.my legs..my mind kept screaming. kill him!! Kill him!!

I walked so fast, until it became a desperate run. My heels echoed against the tiles. I covered my face with one hand, muffling the sob that broke free.

I burst into my office and slammed the door shut behind me. My knees weakened, and I collapsed against the desk, shaking uncontrollably. The man I had trusted, the man I had waited three hours for tonight, had another life, another child… and I had just saved it with my own hands. I just saved my husband's illegitimate children!!

The tears came hot and fast, blurring my vision. My fingers dug into the fabric of my scrubs as I whispered through clenched teeth, “Why, Adrian… why? Wasn't the love I showed you important? I worked so hard in order to love you! Why is it so hard to control your third leg?”

The sudden buzz of my phone jolted me. I wiped at my eyes with trembling hands and picked it up, hoping foolishly that it was him.

But the message that glowed on my screen stole the last shred of breath from my chest.

Unknown Number: “Why are you running away? How does it feel to be cheated on? Ohh poor Alessa! of course you don't feel anything? You are an emotionless Robot. Who are you showing that fake act there? There is no one watching your performance. Are you trying to deceive your Brain that you are heartbroken?. But did you feel good to be kicked and stepped on? ”

My heart beating violently, the phone slipping from my grasp and clattering to the floor. A cold shiver raced down my spine. Someone was watching me as always. I always get a text from an unknown person. And he knows my secret! If I catch him I will shut him up forever. No one must know about me!! No one must know!! If not my grandfather will kill me.

My eyes darted to the door, the windows. I was at the top floor, and I peeped down the window, there were a lot of people around. Most of them were patients and Doctors. No one was on their phone.

The text came again, “Looking for me? Don't worry Alessa. Nobody will ever find me. So now would you like to kill that woman that has a child for your man? I can help you!!”

I tried to text back, but it was blocked at the other end.

“Alessa, you don't have to worry about who I am. So Alessa, do you know you are a mistress to your husband?”

My phone buzzed again, and it was a wedding picture of Adrian and the other woman. It was the same photo of a woman he once claimed to be his cousin.

I froze as the phone fell

from my hand.

Then, a knock came at the door.

I spent three hours searing the perfect wagyu steak and chilling a bottle of 1996 Dom Pérignon for our anniversary. My wife, Evelin, texted me saying she was stuck in a late board meeting. "Don't wait up." But a bank alert on my phone told a different story: a $5,600 charge at a VIP lounge in the Meatpacking District. When I tracked her down, I didn't find her in a boardroom; I found her sitting on my business partner's lap, laughing as he fed her chocolate-covered strawberries. When I confronted them, Evelin didn't even look guilty. She called me hysterical and a "prude" for interrupting their night. Hank mocked me to my face, calling me a pathetic "trophy husband" who was probably home ironing napkins while they were out having real fun. When I finally snapped and defended my dignity, my own wife slapped me across the face and had her security throw me out like trash. "You are nothing without the Carney name. You're a stray I picked up." By the time I hit the sidewalk, she had frozen all our joint accounts and blacklisted my name from every major firm in the city. I had spent ten years managing her family's billions and fixing the books her lover messed up, only to be left with ten dollars in my pocket and a suitcase full of dusty law books. She thinks I'm a broken man who will come crawling back to beg for mercy just to afford a meal. I realized then that our marriage was just a corpse I'd been dragging around, and she was the monster who had killed it years ago. I felt the sting of her slap and the weight of her betrayal, wondering how I could have been so blind to the person I shared a bed with. Standing in a cramped apartment in Queens, I blocked her number and called a "shark" lawyer I hadn't spoken to since law school. "I'm the biggest shark in the tank, Dom. Let her try to ruin you." Evelin thinks she took everything, but she forgot one thing: I'm the one who knows exactly where the bodies are buried in her family's ledgers. The war has just begun.
