Chapter 2

The first one happened at lunch.

Virginia was halfway through a bowl of broth when she set the spoon down. Her hand went to her chest. Her breath caught — once, twice, that small fluttering hitch that pulls every head in a room toward the source. The baby was sleeping in the carrier on her chest. She didn't reach for him. She reached for the table.

"Callum," she whispered. "Something's wrong. My wolf — she's — "

He was already on his feet.

I watched him cross the dining hall in four long strides and lift her out of the chair like she weighed nothing. The baby made a small sound against her shoulder. Callum's free arm cradled them both, and his face had that look I used to think was reserved for me — that tight, focused fear an Alpha gets when something he is responsible for is in danger.

"Get the healer," he said to the nearest warrior. "Now."

He carried her out. The dining hall stayed silent for a beat, and then twenty people very carefully went back to their food.

I finished my plate.

---

It happened again two days later, in the upstairs corridor.

I heard it before I saw it. A thin, gasping sound, the kind a person makes when they've forgotten how their lungs work. By the time I came around the corner, Virginia was on her knees with one hand braced on the doorframe of the Luna suite, her hair in her face, whispering the same line she'd used at lunch.

"My wolf. My wolf is dying without — "

Callum came up the stairs three at a time. He didn't see me at first. He went straight to her, dropped to one knee on the floor, and put his hand against the back of her neck the way you steady an animal that is about to bolt.

"Breathe," he said, low. "Breathe, Virginia. I've got you."

She breathed.

He carried her down to the clinic and stayed there four hours.

I sat in the smaller room down the hall with my back against the headboard and my hand on my belly. The pup was kicking. The mate bond between my ribs felt like a wire that had been pulled too tight for too long, thin enough now that I could almost see through it. I pressed my palm flat against my sternum and counted the kicks until they slowed.

By the end of the week there had been five episodes. One in the dining hall. One in the corridor. One on the front steps. Two in his study, the door closed behind them.

They were always when he could see her. They were always when he wasn't with me. The healer never had a name for what was wrong, only words like fragile and strain and the wolf's grief, words that left a lot of room for a man who wanted to keep believing.

I noticed.

I wrote it down later.

---

The Friday training session was on the calendar in my own handwriting.

I had run those sessions every other week for two years. I assessed the warriors, gave the Gamma my notes, signed off on advancement. It was one of the few things at Black Ridge that was still mine on paper.

I went down to the field at three. Eight months pregnant, in the loose tunic and stretch leggings that were the only clothes that still fit, one hand braced low on my back. The warriors were already running drills on the lower field. The observation platform was set up the way it always was — two chairs on the raised wooden deck, angled so the Alpha and the Luna could watch the field together.

Virginia was in my chair.

She had the baby in the carrier. Callum was in the chair beside her, leaning forward with his forearms on his knees, watching the drills the way he always did. Virginia's hand was on his arm.

Hugh, the Gamma, saw me first. He had served the pack longer than I had been alive. His eyes flicked to the platform and then back to me, and for a second he looked like he was going to say something. Then he closed his mouth and gave me a small, tight nod.

I climbed the steps to the platform.

There was no third chair. There had never needed to be a third chair.

I stood at the railing instead. I rested both hands on the wood. I watched the field.

"Rose," Virginia said, soft and surprised, as though she hadn't seen me coming. "Oh — should I — "

"Stay where you are," I said. My voice was even. "I'll watch from here."

Callum did not turn his head.

I stood through forty minutes of drills. The platform was warm in the afternoon sun and my back ached low and steady, the kind of ache that lives in your hips at eight months. I made my notes on the small pad I'd brought. I marked the warriors who had improved and the ones who needed conditioning. I noted that one of the new recruits, a tall boy named Eli, kept dropping his left guard. I would tell Hugh to watch him.

When the session ended I walked down the steps and crossed the field to Hugh and handed him my pad without sitting down.

"Same as last week on the rotations," I said. "Watch Eli's left guard. Bring me the new recruits' files by Monday."

"Yes, Luna." He said it quietly, the way a man says a word he is afraid is about to become untrue.

I walked back to the pack house alone.

At the edge of the field I turned and looked back, just once. Virginia was leaning toward Callum, her mouth at his ear, saying something that made him put his hand over hers on his arm.

I didn't slow down.

---

I waited until the house was asleep.

The board under the rug at the foot of my bed had been loose since the week I'd moved into this room. A small detail I'd noticed and never mentioned to anyone — the way a person who has not yet decided she will need a hiding place still files the location of one. I knelt, slowly, with both hands braced on the bed frame to lower the weight of my belly. I lifted the rug. I worked the board free with my fingers.

The journal was where I'd left it. Plain leather cover, no name on the front. Inside, my own private shorthand — a script my mother had taught me as a girl, the kind of writing that looks, to anyone else, like a careful row of nothing.

I hadn't opened it in weeks.

I sat on the floor with my back against the bed frame and the journal balanced on the rise of my belly. I uncapped the pen.

I did not write about how it felt.

I wrote a list.

*What I know.* The affair never ended. The child is being presented as Callum's. Virginia has occupied the Luna suite. The episodes are staged — the timing is too clean, her wolf does not smell sick when I am close enough to scent her, and the healer cannot name what is wrong because there is nothing wrong. Callum will not hear me while she is in this house.

*What I can prove.* Almost nothing. Yet.

*What I need.* Witnesses I can trust. A bloodline scent test on that baby, at the right time, by the right hand. A way out before the pup comes. A door that locks behind me.

I stopped. I held the pen above the page for a long moment, feeling my daughter turn under my ribs, feeling the other bond — the real one, the one no Alpha tone had ever touched — settle warm and certain in the cradle of my body.

Then I wrote one more line at the bottom of the page.

*Sienna Voss. Ashford Pack. Wolf-law advocate. Discreet.*

I capped the pen. I closed the journal. I put it back under the board, set the rug back over the board, and I climbed into bed and lay on my side with one hand on my belly and the other pressed flat against my sternum.

I did not sleep.

I listened to the pack house breathe around me, and I thought about how many things in a woman's life can be quietly arranged before anyone notices she has stopped waiting.
