Chapter 3

I remembered Marcus the way you remember a useful tool — not fondly, but precisely.

Eight months ago, at the Greywood Summit. A multi-pack gathering, the kind that happens twice a year and accomplishes very little except reminding everyone where the borders are. I'd been there as Caleb's Luna, standing at his left shoulder while he worked the room with the easy authority of a man who has never had to wonder whether he belongs somewhere.

Marcus had been standing alone near the east window, watching the room the way I was watching it. Not socializing. Assessing. He was Ironvale's Beta — I knew that from the summit roster — and Ironvale had no alliance with Shadowcrest, which meant he and Caleb had exchanged exactly one handshake and then moved in opposite directions.

We'd spoken for maybe four minutes. He'd asked a precise question about Shadowcrest's approach to border disputes. I'd given him a precise answer. He'd nodded once, said something dry about the summit's catering, and moved on.

Four minutes. Professional. Forgettable.

I'd filed it away anyway, the way I filed everything. The way he'd listened. The way he hadn't wasted words. The way his eyes had stayed level and unimpressed through the whole conversation, like a man who had already decided what things were worth and wasn't interested in being talked into a different number.

Now, sitting at my desk in the early morning quiet of the pack house, I turned that memory over in my hands like a stone I was checking for weight.

Caleb had called Silverfang. Thornridge. Duskhollow. Every pack with something to lose by crossing him.

Ironvale had nothing to lose. No alliance. No trade routes. No shared border agreements that Caleb could threaten to pull.

And Marcus, I thought, was the kind of Beta who understood the value of information.

---

The human courier's name was Pete. He drove a supply truck twice a week from a distribution center outside Shadowcrest's territorial boundary to a small hardware shop at the edge of town — the kind of shop that sold paint thinner and rope and didn't ask questions. I'd been signing off on the supply orders for two years. I knew his schedule down to the half hour.

I started small. A note tucked inside the order form, folded twice, addressed to a post office box in the next county. Nothing identifying. Just a name — M. Ironvale — and a question about the summit's catering, phrased the way Marcus had phrased it to me. A test. A signal.

I waited.

Pete came back the following Tuesday with a hardware receipt and a folded slip of paper tucked underneath it. Four words in a clean, economical hand.

*Still a poor spread.*

I read it twice. Then I burned it over the kitchen sink and washed the ash down the drain.

He remembered. Good.

---

Two weeks of careful exchanges. Nothing direct. Nothing that named names or places or intentions. Just the slow, patient work of establishing a channel — making sure it held weight before I put anything real on it.

I was meticulous about the timing. I never passed a note on the same day twice in a row. I varied the placement — sometimes in the order form, once folded inside the invoice, once tucked into the spine of a catalog I was returning. Pete was incurious by nature and well-compensated by the pack for his deliveries. He didn't read what he carried. He didn't ask.

In the house, I was exactly what I had decided to be. Calm. Functional. Present. I attended every meeting, signed every form, brewed every cup of tea. Cora had started leaving her shoes in the front hallway, right next to Caleb's. I stepped around them every morning without comment.

My wolf watched all of it from somewhere deep and still inside me. Patient. Coiled.

*Not yet,* I told her.

She waited.

---

On a Thursday morning, three weeks after the first note, I sent the real message.

I'd written it four times before I was satisfied. Not because I was uncertain about the content — I'd known what I was offering since the night I'd stood at the tree line and looked at the border I couldn't cross. I rewrote it because precision mattered. Every word was a commitment, and I didn't make commitments I hadn't examined from every angle.

The final version was half a page. Clinical. Specific.

I had detailed knowledge of Shadowcrest's patrol routes — the full eastern and northern quadrants, the shift rotations, the twelve-minute gap on the north fence and the eighteen-minute gap on the southeast terrain. I had the training schedules for the warrior corps, including the monthly live-drill calendar. I had the territorial weak points that Caleb's own Beta had flagged in a report I'd countersigned two years ago and apparently forgotten I'd read.

In exchange, I required three things. Safe passage across the border on a date of my choosing, with no less than forty-eight hours' notice. An armed escort to the edge of Ironvale's territory. And the resources — documentation, contacts, a clean start — to establish myself as a packless wolf without a trail that Caleb could follow.

I folded the note. I tucked it into the order form. I handed it to Pete with the same expression I used when I was handing him a routine invoice.

Then I went back inside and made breakfast and did not think about it again, because thinking about it would not make Marcus answer faster, and I had learned a long time ago that the only thing worse than waiting was waiting badly.

---

He went quiet for three days.

I noticed. I didn't show it.

On the third evening I sat across from Caleb at dinner and listened to him talk about the northern patrol restructure and asked two intelligent questions and refilled his water glass when it was low. Cora was at the other end of the table, laughing at something Beta Reyes had said. The candlelight was warm. The food was good. Everything looked exactly like a pack house that was functioning the way it was supposed to.

I thought about the note. About whether Marcus had taken it to his Alpha. About whether Ironvale's Alpha had looked at the intelligence value and decided it was worth the complication, or whether he'd decided the complication wasn't worth any price.

I thought about what I would do if the answer was no.

I didn't have a good answer to that yet. So I set it aside.

---

Pete came on a Tuesday.

The slip of paper was thicker this time. Folded three times instead of two. I took it upstairs to my room, closed the door, and sat on the edge of the bed.

Ironvale's Alpha had approved the arrangement. The intelligence was assessed as high value — those exact words, in Marcus's clean, economical hand. The escort would be ready on forty-eight hours' notice, armed, at the southeast boundary marker. The resources I'd requested would be arranged in advance and confirmed before I crossed.

And then the last paragraph, which I read twice.

The agreement was formalized as a written compact, enclosed. Binding under inter-pack law. Witnessed by Ironvale's Alpha and Beta. In the event of a legal challenge, the compact's terms would require Shadowcrest to disclose the territorial violations that had necessitated it — specifically, the use of pack law to restrict a Luna's movement without elder council approval.

I sat with that for a moment.

Marcus had not just agreed to the arrangement. He had built a legal structure around it that Caleb could not touch without exposing himself. Either Caleb accepted the compact as valid and let me go, or he challenged it and handed the elder council a reason to look at exactly how he'd been using pack law for the past three weeks.

Four minutes at a summit, eight months ago. I had been right about the weight of that stone.

I read the compact twice. Every clause. Every condition. I checked the witness signatures and the inter-pack seal.

Then I folded it carefully along its original creases and tucked it inside the lining of my winter coat, in the small interior pocket that closed with a button. The coat was hanging in the back of my closet, behind the summer things, where nobody looked.

I smoothed the lining flat with my palm.

Outside my window, the afternoon light was going gold and long across the pack house grounds. Somewhere downstairs, I could hear Cora's voice and the sound of a cabinet closing.

I buttoned the pocket.

Forty-eight hours' notice. That was all I needed to give them.

I wasn't ready to give it yet. There was still one thing left to do — one conversation I had been building toward since the night I'd stood in the living room doorway and cataloged the evidence with a cold, clear eye.

But the door was open now. The escort was waiting. The compact was in my coat.

When the time came, I would be ready.
