Chapter 1

---

Grandma Marisol, our pack’s revered healer, had been pushed from a high floor and was rushed into the emergency room. My hands trembled as I dialed my husband, Magnus, the Alpha heir of the Silverfang Pack, over and over until he finally answered.

"Alpha Magnus," I choked out, using his title as pack hierarchy demanded, "Grandma Marisol’s had an accident! Please, bring thirty thousand dollars for the surgery to the hospital!"

Instead, his voice roared through the phone, cold and dismissive, "Why should I care about your grandma’s accident? Are you still trying to sponge off me? Get lost!"

The line went dead, and I stood there, clutching my phone, the weight of his words crushing me. Grandma Marisol, the woman who had raised me after my parents’ death, was fighting for her life, and Magnus couldn’t be bothered to lift a finger.

Sadly, Grandma couldn’t be saved. She passed away, leaving a void in my heart and our pack. I took the murderer to court, determined to get justice for her, only to watch Magnus accompany Kendall, his first love and a rogue, to the trial. He wiped away all evidence, hired the best defense attorney, and Kendall walked free, painting Grandma as a con artist.

Utterly disheartened, I turned and filed for divorce, severing the mate bond that had once tied us together. Using the formal vow format, I declared, "I, Sadie Moreno, reject you, Magnus Castellano, Alpha heir of the Silverfang Pack, as my mate."

Surprisingly, Magnus panicked, his voice cracking as he tried to reason with me, "My grandmother supported your college education. If you divorce me, it’s ungrateful! She would never approve!"

I scoffed and shoved the death certificate in his face. "Take a good look, Magnus. Where’s your grandmother now?"

---

"Alpha Magnus, Grandma’s had an accident!" I watched as Grandma was wheeled into the emergency room, my voice shaking uncontrollably. The silence on the other end of the line was suffocating, until he finally spoke after what felt like an eternity.

"I’m with Kendall right now. Whatever you need to say can wait."

Before I could respond, he hung up without a hint of emotion. It was always Kendall. My heart sank into a deep pit of anger and helplessness.

Kendall Martin, a manipulative rogue, was Magnus’s first love. They had parted ways five years ago when she went overseas, but her return months ago had thrown our lives into chaos. No matter the time or place, even if Magnus was in the middle of pack duties or asleep, he’d drop everything at her call.

Even when I expressed my frustration, he turned it back on me, his alpha tone sharp and commanding, "Sadie, we’re just married. You don’t get to control my life! I have my own choices, and I don’t need to constantly explain myself or be managed by you!"

"Kendall is vulnerable," he continued, his voice softening as if he were trying to justify his actions. "She’s just returned from abroad without any support in this city. It’s only fair I help her as an old friend."

I struggled to contain my bitterness and kept my eyes on the nurse who emerged from the emergency room. "The situation doesn’t look good," she said gently. "We’re doing everything we can, but first, you need to go to the hospital’s second floor and settle the payment."

I dialed Magnus again, losing count of my attempts, until he finally answered, clearly annoyed, "What kind of trouble are you trying to stir up now? I already told you, something’s up with Kendall, and I’m not coming home tonight. Stop bothering me."

Before he hung up, I managed to say, "Grandma’s had an accident. Bring thirty thousand dollars to the hospital now."

He erupted, his voice sharp and cruel, "Why is your grandma’s accident my problem? You still haven’t stopped trying to milk me, have you? Get lost!"

I overheard Kendall’s saccharine voice joining in, "Magnus, has her grandma fallen ill? You should go back and check on her. I can handle things; I’ll call a cab myself, though it’s late and I might run into some trouble..."

"Kendall, I’m not leaving," Magnus snapped. "Her grandma’s death means nothing to me!"

I was on the verge of exploding, but the call had already ended, and when I tried dialing again, I realized I’d been blocked. A chill settled in my heart, as if a thorn had sunk deep inside.

After what felt like ages, the doctor finally approached with news. I braced myself and addressed him urgently, "How is Grandma?"

"The injuries were too severe," he said gently. "We did our best. The patient is still conscious, so family can see her one last time."

His words cut like a cold blade, slicing through the depths of my heart.

I was the "crazy girl" my family sent to a survivalist commune in Utah to rot. Four years later, I returned to Manhattan with a titanium USB drive and a heart full of ice, ready to blackmail the one man who could burn my family to the ground. But I underestimated how much they hated me. My fiancé, Preston, was already laundering money through my inheritance and sleeping with my replacement. He didn't even flinch when I showed him the evidence of his crimes. Instead, he grabbed me by the shoulders, smashed my phone, and shoved me out of his moving Lincoln into a midnight storm. I hit the wet pavement hard, my knees scraping against the asphalt as I watched him drive away, laughing about how I was a "dirt-poor exile" that nobody wanted. Within minutes, my credit cards were flagged as stolen and my father’s lawyers were drafting a statement calling me mentally unstable. I was left shivering in a puddle of oily sludge, wearing a ruined Chanel suit, with no money, no home, and no one to hear me scream. I couldn't understand how they could be so cruel. I was their flesh and blood, yet they treated me like a broken toy to be discarded in the trash. I was a "distressed asset" in a city that only valued gold. That’s when a black armored SUV pulled to the curb. King Wagner—the ruthless shark of Wall Street and Preston’s own uncle—looked at my muddy face with cold, calculating eyes. He didn't offer me pity; he offered me a leash. "You belong to me now," he whispered, pulling me into the dry warmth of his car. By the next morning, he had announced our engagement to the world, turning me into the very weapon that would slit my family's throat.
