Chapter 10

The sun rose over the molten skyline of Ashreach, casting flickering red light across the stone paths beneath Seraphina's feet. The ancient city was alive now no longer just ruins but a breathing, trembling organism stirred awake by her presence. Seraphina   palms still burned with the imprint of the Phoenix seal, its fire pulsing through her veins like a second heartbeat. The Trial of Flame awaited at the Phoenix Altar, and she could feel it calling to her.

Cassian walked beside her in silence. The closer they came to the altar, the more distant he seemed haunted by the knowledge that every step took deeper into a legacy not even she fully understood.

"Do you feel it?" she asked finally, breaking the silence.

He nodded. "Like the city itself is watching us." They crossed a bridge made of obsidian stone, its edges glowing faintly. Beneath it, lava churned and whispered secrets too old for words. At the far end stood the altar, a towering structure carved into the side of a rockface, with fire cascading down its sides like a burning waterfall.

Solen waited there.

"You came," he said, eyeing Seraphina's clenched fists. "And you carry the flame."

"I'm ready," she said, stepping forward.

He raised his hand. "This trial will test your spirit, not your strength. You'll enter the inner flame alone. Inside, your soul will be laid bare. If there's weakness, the fire will consume you." Cassian grabbed her wrist. "You don't have to prove anything. You've come this far."   Seraphina looked into his eyes. "I'm not doing this to prove myself. I'm doing it because it's who I am. I was born of fire and now, I'll become it."

With one final look at him, she stepped into the blaze.

And the trial begin

The moment Seraphina  stepped into the blaze, the world vanished.

No heat, no pain just blinding light that swallowed her whole. She opened her eyes and found herself standing in a vast expanse of flame that danced without consuming. The ground beneath her feet was glassy, reflecting distorted images of her face, her past, her fears.

A voice echoed from the fire.

"To wield the Phoenix flame, you must bare your truth."

The flames twisted and formed the image of a girl herself, younger, terrified, hiding behind her mother's cloak during the raids in Elysara . Another image: her kneeling beside her mother's lifeless body, hands trembling, unable to cry because she had to run. Then her years in exile, surviving, stealing, hiding learning to bury her fire.

Each memory burned again, not as torment, but as a reckoning.

"I am not that scared girl anymore," she whispered, fists clenched. "I am fire."

The flames shifted, forming another figure Cassian. But this version of him wore a crown of shadows, his eyes cold, his back turned to her.

"Love is weakness," the voice said. "Would you sacrifice your purpose for him?"

She stepped forward. "He is not my weakness. He is my choice."

The illusion shattered.

Then came silence utter stillness. A single ember floated down before her, and as she touched it, warmth surged through her soul. The flame didn't burn. It healed.

Outside, Solen watched the fire pillar rise with a slow smile. Cassian stepped forward anxiously, but Solen held him back.

"She's awakening,"

he said. When the blaze faded, Seraphina  stood at the centereyes glowing like twin suns, her hair lifting slightly with the power radiating off her.

The Phoenix flame was no longer within her. She was the flame

Cassian could barely believe what he was seeing.

Seraphina stood tall, surrounded by a faint aura of gold and crimson, her once muted presence now radiating raw, commanding power. Every breath she took pulsed with flame, and yet there was serenity in her expression-like someone who had finally remembered who they truly were.

"Seraphina?" Cassian stepped forward slowly. She turned toward him. "I'm here."

He moved to her side without hesitation, though the energy around her seemed to part for him, accepting his presence. Her hand reached out, and when their fingers touched, it was as if the fire bowed in reverence.

Solen stepped forward, his voice reverent. "You did what no bearer before you could. You merged with the flame." Seraphina looked down at her palms, flames flickering gently beneath her skin. "It's not just a power now. It's a part of me. It always was."

Suddenly, a loud crash echoed from the edge of the forest. A scout burst through the trees, bleeding and out of breath.

"They've found us," he gasped. "The Crimson Order is marching twenty riders, heading straight for the sanctuary."

Solen swore under his breath. "So soon? We thought we had more time."

Cassian looked to Seraphina. "We need to move the villagers."

Seraphina's eyes narrowed. "No. We're not running anymore."

Everyone froze. "This is our ground. Our home. I'm done hiding," she said. Her voice rang with authority, as if fire itself spoke through her. "If they want to burn the world down, they'll have to go through me."

Cassian felt something stir in his chest. Pride. Fear. Love. All tangled in one burning knot.

And in that moment, he knew Seraphina  wasn't just part of this war. She was the key to ending it.

Cassian stood close to Seraphina , watching as the villagers gathered behind them. Torches lit the path around the sanctuary, casting long shadows on the earth.

"They're scared," he whispered.

"So am I," Seraphina  replied softly. "But I won't let them see it."

She turned to the people men, women, even children looking at her with silent hope.

"I know what we face," she began, voice steady. "But I also know what we carry. The fire within us is not just to destroy but to protect, to stand, and to rise."

A quiet murmur passed through the crowd. Cassian touched her arm gently. "You were made for this."

She nodded. "So were you."

As the drums of the approaching enemy echoed in the distance, Seraphina stepped forward, her hand engulfed in controlled flame. "Let them come," she whispered.

And behind her, the fire answered.
