Chapter 2

The pack library stood empty in the afternoon light, dust motes dancing through shafts of sunlight that filtered between heavy curtains. I pulled another leather-bound volume from the shelf, my fingers still trembling slightly from the physical weakness that lingered after my loss. Three days had passed since the ceremony, since I'd watched my mate claim another woman while I miscarried our child alone.

Three days of Brandon's desperate attempts to explain, to justify, to somehow make me understand that his choice was "for the pack's future." Three days of Winnie's triumphant smiles whenever she passed me in the hallways, her scent now permanently marking what had once been our shared spaces.

I opened "Laws of Mate Bonds and Pack Hierarchy" to a chapter I'd read five times already, the words blurring as I forced myself to focus. The legal text was dry, clinical, but it contained the information I needed.

*"In cases where one mate refuses to acknowledge the dissolution of a bond, the aggrieved party may complete a unilateral rejection through the ancient rites, provided proper documentation is filed with a neutral witness..."*

My phone buzzed with a text from the lawyer I'd contacted in the neighboring Riverside Pack—a neutral territory where pack politics couldn't interfere. *"Documents ready for pickup. Remember, once you speak the words, there's no going back. The bond will be permanently severed."*

I closed the book and gathered the papers I'd been studying, my movements careful and deliberate. Every step felt like walking toward a cliff's edge, but the alternative—living as Brandon's secret while he played house with his chosen Luna—was no longer bearable.

The rejection papers felt heavier than they should have as I folded them into a manila envelope. My hands shook as I sealed it, the sound of the adhesive strip unnaturally loud in the silent library.

---

Brandon's office occupied the top floor of the pack house, its floor-to-ceiling windows offering a commanding view of our territory. I knocked twice and entered without waiting for permission, carrying a lunch tray as my excuse for the visit.

"Isabel." His voice carried relief and something that might have been hope. "You look better today."

I set the tray on his desk, noting how his eyes followed my every movement. Dark circles shadowed his features, and his usually immaculate appearance showed signs of strain. Good. He should look as broken as I felt.

"I brought your lunch." My voice sounded steadier than I'd expected. "And something else."

I placed the manila envelope beside his sandwich, watching his expression shift from confusion to wariness as he recognized the legal seal.

"What is this?"

"Rejection papers." The words came out clean, final. "Our mate bond is over, Brandon. I'm offering you the courtesy of making it official together, but your signature isn't required."

He tore open the envelope with violent movements, his eyes scanning the formal language. When he looked up, his face had transformed into something I barely recognized—rage mixed with desperation.

"You can't be serious." He stood abruptly, the papers crumpling in his fist. "Isabel, what we have—what we've built together—you can't just throw it away because you're upset about—"

"About what?" The question came out sharper than intended. "About watching you claim another woman as your mate while I lost our child? About being your dirty little secret for three years while you planned your political marriage?"

His face went white. "You were pregnant?"

The pain in his voice almost broke my resolve. Almost. "Were being the operative phrase. I miscarried during your claiming ceremony. Alone. While you promised to love, honor, and protect someone else."

Brandon sank back into his chair as if I'd physically struck him. "Isabel, I... why didn't you tell me?"

"When?" I laughed, but there was no humor in it. "Between your meetings with Winnie's father? During your romantic dinners planning your future together? Or maybe during one of the nights you didn't come home because you were 'working late'?"

"This changes everything." He reached for me, but I stepped back. "We can fix this. I can explain to the pack council, to Winnie's father—"

"No." The word rang with finality. "You made your choice, Brandon. You chose pack politics over our bond, power over love. I'm simply accepting that choice and moving forward."

He stood again, his Alpha presence filling the room like a storm cloud. "I refuse to sign these papers. Our bond is sacred, blessed by the Moon Goddess herself. You're being emotional, manipulative—"

"Then I'll complete the rejection without you." I turned toward the door, my heart hammering against my ribs. "Midnight, at the sacred grove. With or without your cooperation, this ends tonight."

"Isabel, wait—"

But I was already gone, leaving him alone with his crumpled papers and the ruins of what we'd once been.

---

The sacred grove lay at the heart of our territory, ancient oaks forming a natural cathedral under the star-filled sky. I knelt in the center of the clearing, the rejection ritual's formal words heavy on my tongue. The moon hung full and silver above, a silent witness to the breaking of bonds.

"I, Isabel Carter, daughter of Alpha James Carter of the Moonrise Pack, reject you, Brandon Medina, Alpha of the Shadowmoon Pack, as my mate." Each word felt like swallowing glass. "By moon and stars, by earth and sky, I sever the bond between us."

The pain hit immediately—a tearing sensation that started in my chest and radiated outward like liquid fire. I doubled over, gasping as our mate bond began to fray and snap, three years of connection dissolving into nothing.

Somewhere in the distance, I heard Brandon's anguished howl echo through the forest. He felt it too, the severing, the loss.

When the pain finally subsided, I sat in the grove's silence, feeling strangely empty and free all at once. The constant hum of our bond, the awareness of his emotions and presence, had vanished completely.

I was alone. But for the first time in months, I was also free.
