Chapter 2

I pulled out my phone, my fingers steady despite the humiliation burning through me. The bank lobby had fallen silent except for the soft hum of the air conditioning and the occasional click of keyboards. Everyone was watching—waiting to see how this would play out.

I dialed Sterling's number, expecting him to answer immediately. He always did when I called.

"Elise?" His voice came through, slightly distracted. "What is it? I'm in the middle of something."

"I'm at the bank," I said, keeping my voice low but clear. "There's a situation with my accounts. Your girlfriend seems to think they belong to the Torres family."

There was a pause, and I could almost hear the shift in his attitude before he spoke again.

"My girlfriend? You mean Zara? What are you talking about, Elise?"

"The woman at the customer service desk," I explained, my patience already wearing thin. "She claims these accounts are under your name, not mine."

Another pause, longer this time. When Sterling spoke again, his voice had changed completely.

"Look, I don't know what game you're playing, but you need to back off. Those accounts are mine, and you have no right to be there causing trouble."

I blinked, disbelief washing over me. "Sterling, these are my personal accounts. The ones my father set up for me when I turned twenty-five."

"Your accounts?" He laughed, a harsh sound that carried through the phone. "You're delusional, Elise. You're just a jealous, desperate woman trying to interfere with my relationship."

The conversation had drawn even more attention. I could see a businessman nearby pretending not to listen while typing furiously on his laptop. An elderly woman clutching her purse had stopped completely to stare.

"Jealous?" I repeated, my voice dangerously soft. "Of what, exactly?"

"Of Zara, obviously," Sterling snapped. "She's my fiancée, not you. Whatever arrangement our families made, it doesn't change the fact that you're nothing to me."

The words hit like a physical blow. Around me, whispers started to ripple through the lobby.

"I suggest you leave the bank immediately," Sterling continued, his voice rising. "Before you embarrass yourself further."

I ended the call without responding, my face a perfect mask of control despite the storm raging inside me.

---

Twenty minutes later, the bank's glass doors swung open with dramatic force. Sterling strode in, flanked by two security guards in dark suits. His face was flushed with anger, his movements aggressive as he scanned the lobby until his eyes locked on mine.

"There she is," he announced loudly, pointing at me as he approached. "This is the woman I told you about."

The security guards moved closer, their presence intimidating. But I noticed something odd—the bank's regular security team looked confused, exchanging glances with each other.

"Sterling," I said calmly, though my heart was pounding. "This is unnecessary."

"What's unnecessary is you harassing my fiancée and trying to steal my money," he replied, his voice carrying through the lobby. "These accounts are mine. I have full authority over them."

He turned to the growing crowd of onlookers. "This woman is delusional. She thinks she can just walk in here and take what belongs to me."

The branch manager, Marcus Chen, approached cautiously. "Mr. Torres, perhaps we should discuss this privately—"

"No," Sterling cut him off. "I want everyone to hear what kind of woman Elise Daniels really is."

He turned back to me, his eyes narrowed. "If you don't leave immediately, I'll have you arrested for harassment and attempted theft."

---

"Let me see the account information," I said to Marcus Chen, ignoring Sterling's threats.

The manager hesitated, looking between Sterling and me uncertainly.

"Now," I added, my voice leaving no room for argument.

With a nervous nod, he turned his computer screen toward me. What I saw made my blood run cold.

There, in black and white, was my account information—but with Sterling's name listed as the primary account holder. My own name had been pushed down to "secondary" status, with access privileges significantly reduced.

"How long has this been like this?" I asked, my voice eerily calm despite the fury building inside me.

Marcus Chen cleared his throat. "I... I'm not sure what you mean, Ms. Daniels. These accounts have always been under Mr. Torres's name."

"Always?" I repeated, raising an eyebrow.

"Yes," he insisted, but I caught the slight tremor in his voice. "Mr. Torres is the primary account holder. Your access was... generously provided as a courtesy."

I straightened slowly, my eyes never leaving his face. "And you're certain about that?"

"Absolutely," he replied, but his gaze dropped to the floor.

Behind him, Sterling smiled triumphantly, clearly believing he had won this round.

What neither of them realized was that I had already spotted the inconsistencies in the document—small details that would prove their conspiracy and ultimately bring them both down.
