🐺 CHAPTER TWELVE - The Escape Before Dawn

The forest was silent, but the silence was heavier than any storm. Dawn had not yet broken, yet the first streaks of pale light crept over the horizon, painting the treetops in gray. Kael moved like a shadow, silent, his wolf instincts guiding every step.

Lyra followed, her mark glowing faintly under the Moonblood sky. The Oath pulsed between them, strong, insistent, binding their hearts and senses together. She could feel his heartbeat, his wolf, every movement, every breath-warning her, grounding her.

"Are you ready?" Kael's voice was low, tense.

Lyra nodded, swallowing the fear twisting in her stomach. "As ready as I'll ever be."

They paused at the edge of the pack territory. Beyond the mountains, the Council's reach ended, and freedom-or survival-began. Kael crouched low, silver eyes scanning the forest.

"Darkfangs will be on high alert," he whispered. "They know we're leaving. They'll try to stop us."

Lyra's heart raced. "We can't let them catch us."

Kael's hand brushed hers, and the Oath pulsed violently. "We won't."

They ran.

The first Darkfang scout appeared, black fur blending with the shadows, eyes glowing red in the dim light. Kael shifted mid-leap, wolf form striking with brutal precision. Lyra instinctively raised her hands, silver light erupting, scattering the scout backward like a bolt of lightning.

Another Darkfang appeared from the opposite side, snarling. Kael intercepted, his claws slashing through the air. Lyra's mark flared again, releasing a pulse of power that threw the creature off balance.

The forest became a blur of movement, claws, and light. Lyra felt the adrenaline surge, the Oath tightening between them, her energy feeding off Kael's strength.

"Keep close!" Kael shouted. "Do not lose focus!"

They dashed through the trees, leaping over fallen logs, sliding down steep slopes, narrowly avoiding snags and roots. Every second was a struggle, every heartbeat a warning: the Darkfangs were relentless.

Suddenly, a massive wolf emerged, blocking their path. Its eyes were black as night, fangs bared. Lyra's mark pulsed violently. She could feel Kael tense beside her.

"Stay behind me!" he growled.

Lyra obeyed instinctively, letting the Oath guide her hands. Silver light burst outward, forming a protective barrier around them. The wolf collided with the barrier, yelping in pain, but didn't retreat. It lunged again, faster, stronger.

Kael shifted, leaping directly into the beast, teeth sinking into its shoulder. The wolf howled, spinning violently. Lyra channeled more energy, her mark glowing brighter, feeding Kael's strength, amplifying the power of the Oath.

The wolf collapsed, unconscious. Kael's chest heaved as he shifted back to human form, eyes scanning the darkness.

"We're not safe yet," he said, voice tight. "There's more ahead."

Lyra nodded, trembling but determined. She felt the fire inside her growing, stronger with every heartbeat. The Oath was alive, and she knew-tonight, she would fight not just for survival, but for Kael, for their bond, and for a future beyond the Council's control.

As they pressed forward, the first hints of dawn broke over the horizon, pale and uncertain. But Lyra knew the real battle was only beginning.

The Council's reach might extend far, the Darkfangs might hunt endlessly, but together...

They could survive anything.

And somewhere in the forest, the Moonblood's glow faded, leaving only the promise of what was to come.

The same fireworks. The same man on one knee. Only this time, Mark's eyes were filled with tears as he held my hand and whispered, "Lara, don't go."
