Filled with overwhelming joy, I dragged my suitcase and ended my business trip ahead of schedule, eager to surprise my husband, Sam. As I approached our front door, the voices emanating from inside brought me to an abrupt halt.
The door wasn't fully closed, leaving a narrow gap.
Peeking through it, I saw the bedroom door ajar, and the voices of Sam and Sasha drifted out, so clear that it felt as if they were right beside me.
"Sam, you still remember that I gave birth to your daughter!"
Sasha's voice was soft and coquettish, yet laced with a hint of complaint.
"I've been with you for eight years without any official status. How could you have the heart to keep me as just a nanny all this time?"
Her tone rose slightly, brimming with dissatisfaction.
Those words were like bullets, piercing straight into my heart.
I had been with Sam for ten years.
And they had been secretly together for a full eight years and even had a child.
No wonder Sasha had tried on several occasions to rummage through my wardrobe without my notice while I was away.
She had even tried on my expensive designer dresses and stood in front of the mirror, posing unabashedly.
Sasha's eyes instantly welled up at the sight of my fury, tears pooling in her eyes.
She put on a pitiful act and burst into sob.
Sam, completely flustered, rushed in front of me in an instant, spreading his arms wide as if to shield Sasha from my wrath.
He babbled on about how Sasha came from a financially struggling family, with her younger brother gravely ill and in desperate need of money for treatment.
According to Sam, Sasha had been driven to a moment of madness, simply wanting to put on those beautiful clothes, take some pictures, and gain attention and sympathy on social media to raise funds for her brother's medical bills. He assured me that it was all a misunderstanding and that she hadn't meant to offend me on purpose.
He even went on to say that after all these years working for our family, there was an emotional bond, and he pleaded with me to be magnanimous and forgive her.
What's more, he suggested that I should just give those clothes to her as a gesture of kindness.
No wonder Dora, the daughter I had raised for eight years, showed no affection towards me.
Every time I came home, she never greeted me with a smile, and she even uttered the word "Mom" reluctantly.
It was Sasha whom she adored and clung to the most.
At first, I had naively assumed that it was because Sasha, as the nanny, had been the one to take care of Dora since she was a baby.
Little did I know that Dora was actually Sasha's biological daughter.
Just then, Dora emerged from the bedroom.
