Chapter 3

The mind-link hit me before I'd made it twenty feet from Estella's corridor.

Jaden's voice, cold and clipped, dropping into my skull without warning the way it always did when he wanted me to know he could reach me anywhere.

*Stop embarrassing me. Stop embarrassing this pack. If you cannot control yourself, I will have my mother handle your transition out of the Luna role.*

I stopped walking.

My burned wrist — still tender where Vivienne's scalding broth had kissed the skin — pressed itself against the cool plaster of the corridor wall on its own, and I stood there with my eyes on the floor and the words settling into me like stones into still water.

Sable went motionless inside my chest. Not hurt. Not panicked. Just very, very still, the way she'd been since the records room.

I counted to three. Four. Five.

Then I pressed my thumb against the inside of my opposite wrist — hard, deliberate, the same small anchor I'd been using for three years to keep myself from coming apart in public — and I catalogued the threat the way I had learned to catalogue everything now. Filed. Dated. Added to the shape of what I was building.

I did not respond to the mind-link.

I pushed off the wall and walked toward Riley's quarters.

---

Her room was on the east side of the pack house, away from the Alpha wing, tucked into the corner where the building's old plumbing made the walls too noisy for monitoring equipment to pick up cleanly. I knew this because Riley had told me once, two years ago, as a joke. *If you ever need to say something real, come to my room. The pipes talk louder than I do.*

I hadn't laughed at the time. I wasn't laughing now.

She opened the door before I knocked — tracker's hearing — and took one look at my face and stepped back to let me in.

I laid everything out on her bed. The photographed originals. The falsified final report. The timestamps I had cross-referenced in the small hours of too many sleepless nights. The Alpha tone, the meeting with Estella, the box from Delacroix's with its ribbon and its implication. The mind-link message, word for word.

Riley sat on the edge of the mattress and listened. She didn't say anything. She didn't move much. She just watched my hands as I spoke, and when I finished she was quiet for a moment that stretched long enough that I heard the pipes in the wall groan and settle.

Then she said it.

"I smelled something wrong in your herbal tea. Weeks ago." Her voice was low and flat. Not making an excuse of it. "Something chemical, under the raspberry leaf. I didn't recognize it exactly but it was wrong, and I —" She stopped. "I should have told you."

I looked at her. The expression on her face was not guilt the way most people wear guilt — performed, softened with self-justification. It was the raw, stripped kind. The kind that knows it doesn't get to ask for anything back.

"You're telling me now," I said.

She held my gaze for a moment. Then she nodded, once, the way she did when a decision was already made and didn't need ceremony.

"What do you need?"

I sat down beside her on the bed and unfolded the second page of my notes — the timeline I'd started the morning after the records room, sparse and careful, every date I could document paired with every action I could verify. There were gaps. Too many gaps, still. The kind of gaps that Estella had spent years making sure existed between herself and anything that could be traced.

"I need her movements," I said. "The herb stores. The territory boundary. Any supply deliveries she's running through personal channels instead of pack procurement." I looked up. "You can track her without her knowing?"

Riley's mouth curved. Not a smile, exactly. The expression of a wolf who has been waiting to be useful. "I've been tracking deer at forty yards in the dark since I was fifteen. Estella's not that subtle."

---

The two weeks that followed were the most careful of my life.

I did not rage. I did not confront. I moved through the pack house like water — quiet, unremarkable, a grieving Luna performing her slow recovery — and beneath that performance, Sable and I built.

Riley was extraordinary.

She tracked Estella the way she tracked everything — without drama, without impatience, with the particular focused competence of a wolf who understands that the most important information lives in pattern rather than in any single moment. She documented two late-night visits to the pack's restricted herb stores in the first week alone, both logged in the monitoring system under routine healer access, both timed at hours when the archive attendant was on rotation break. She noted a meeting at the eastern territory boundary — not unusual for a healer receiving supply shipments, except that Estella signed for no package through pack procurement in those weeks. Whatever crossed that boundary went somewhere else.

Riley relayed everything to me in her room, against the noise of the pipes, her voice low and steady.

"She's buying from outside the pack network," Riley said on the fourth night, her notes spread between us on the mattress. "Personal supplier. No pack record. Whatever she's ordering, she doesn't want it in the procurement logs."

"Can you get a name? Anything on the supplier?"

"Give me a few more days."

I was already writing it down.

My own work ran parallel. The Luna's administrative access — which Jaden had not yet formally revoked, perhaps because doing so would require an official pack announcement he wasn't ready to make — gave me reach into the medical wing's archived records that no one thought to monitor. I moved through those files slowly, a page at a time, cross-referencing Estella's prescription logs against the documented dosage changes in my own file. The inconsistencies were small, individually. Together they formed something precise and irrefutable — a pattern of escalation timed perfectly to the weeks my pregnancy had shown signs of viable development.

Every night I photographed what I found. Every morning I added it to the dossier building inside my journal's cover.

Sable was very quiet through all of it. Not gone. Present in the way a held breath is present — compressed, controlled, waiting for the moment when holding it serves no further purpose.

I pressed my thumb against my wrist one evening and caught myself mid-gesture, and thought: *not grief this time. Not hope. Just patience.*

I put my thumb down. I kept writing.

Neither of us — Sable, or me — had any intention of rushing.
