Chapter 1

The grand council chamber of the Silvermoon Pack house buzzed with anticipation. Polished mahogany tables arranged in a perfect circle gleamed under crystal chandeliers, a setting designed to showcase Manhattan's most powerful werewolf pack. I stood tall beside Marcus, my mate of seven years, as thirty pairs of eyes focused on us.

My heart still raced from the victory. After months of careful negotiation, I'd secured an alliance with the Nightfall Pack—a $50 million asset that would double our territory and cement our dominance in the Northeast. The agreement sat before us, signed in Alpha Dominic Blackwood's elegant script.

"Today marks a historic moment for Silvermoon," Marcus announced, his Alpha tone washing over the room. "The Nightfall Pack has agreed to come under our protection."

A chorus of approving growls filled the chamber. I felt a flicker of pride—this was my achievement, my strategy that had outmaneuvered three rival packs.

"And for this," Marcus continued, turning to face me with what appeared to be a warm smile, "we must thank our Luna."

I straightened my shoulders, Nyx—my silver wolf—purring with satisfaction in my mind. *Finally*, recognition for what I'd accomplished.

Marcus reached for my hand, and I offered it, expecting perhaps a formal acknowledgment or even a small token of appreciation. Instead, he pulled a black Sharpie from his jacket pocket.

"Every achievement deserves a reward," he said, uncapping the marker with a dramatic flourish. The room fell silent as he began drawing on my wrist, his tongue poking between his teeth in mock concentration.

I stared down in disbelief as a cartoonish watch took shape on my skin—a childish doodle with exaggerated hands and numbers.

"There," Marcus announced, stepping back to admire his work. "A watch for our Luna, to mark her *timely* intervention with the Nightfall Pack."

Laughter rippled through the chamber. From across the table, Amanda's eyes gleamed with barely concealed triumph, her perfectly manicured nails tapping against the polished wood.

"Thank you, Alpha," I managed, my voice steady despite the humiliation burning through me. Nyx growled deep in my consciousness, a sound of rage and betrayal.

The meeting continued, but I barely heard the words. The crude ink drawing on my wrist seemed to pulse with each heartbeat, a public marking of exactly how little my mate valued me.

Hours later, I was arranging documents in the eastern corridor when hushed voices drifted from around the corner.

"Did you see it? The Patek Philippe he gave her?"

I froze, my fingers tightening on the alliance paperwork.

"One hundred and fifty thousand dollars, at least," came the reply, a female voice I recognized as belonging to one of the younger pack members. "Amanda couldn't stop showing it off at the private ceremony. Limited edition, with diamonds on the face."

"And then he draws a cartoon on the Luna's wrist?" The first voice dropped even lower. "After she brought us the Nightfall alliance?"

"Shh! You know they've been—"

I stepped around the corner, and both women jumped, their faces paling at the sight of me. They hurried away with mumbled apologies, leaving me alone with the weight of this new knowledge.

A cartoon on my wrist. A $150,000 watch on hers.

Seven years of loyalty, of fighting and bleeding for this pack, of standing beside a mate who had never truly seen me—crystallized in that moment of perfect clarity.

In our bedroom suite that evening, I waited for Marcus, sitting motionless on the edge of our king-sized bed. When he finally entered, loosening his tie with casual disregard, I raised my wrist, the childish drawing still visible despite my attempts to wash it away.

"A hundred and fifty thousand dollars," I said quietly.

Marcus paused, his expression flickering before settling into practiced indifference. "Excuse me?"

"Amanda's watch. The Patek Philippe. That's what it cost, isn't it?"

He sighed, as if dealing with a petulant child. "Victoria, don't tell me you're actually upset about material things. That's beneath you."

"It's not about the watch," I said, my voice steady despite Nyx's howling rage inside me. "It's about what it represents."

"Enough." His Alpha tone hit me like a physical force, designed to silence and subdue. "I won't discuss this further. Amanda earned that recognition through her dedication to this pack."

Without another word, he turned and left the room, the door closing with quiet finality behind him.

In the silence that followed, Nyx's howl became deafening in my mind—a sound of pure anguish and fury that matched the storm building in my chest. Seven years of devotion, and this was my reward: a cartoon watch and an empty bed.

I looked down at my hands, steady despite everything. Something had broken inside me tonight—not my spirit, but the chains of blind loyalty that had kept me bound for so long.

*"We deserve better,"* Nyx whispered in my mind.

For the first time in seven years, I completely agreed with her.
