Chapter 2

The silence that followed my rejection was deafening. Then came the rage.

"Victoria Warren!" Lucien's voice boomed across the clearing, his face contorting with fury and pain. "You will obey your Alpha!"

The command hit me like a physical blow. I felt the weight of his Alpha tone pressing down on me, trying to force me to my knees. Around me, other omegas dropped instantly, their bodies responding automatically to the hierarchy that ruled our world.

"Submit!" Lucien roared again, his eyes flashing golden with Alpha power.

My legs trembled. Every instinct screamed at me to obey, to protect myself from the crushing pressure of his command. But something deeper held me upright—the memory of my deathbed revelation, the knowledge of his betrayal.

"I will not submit," I whispered, then louder: "I will not submit."

Layla stepped forward, her face a mask of false concern. "Lucien, darling, she's clearly insane. The rejection has broken her mind." Her eyes gleamed with malice as she turned to the crowd. "This omega needs to be taught her place."

"She needs to be punished," someone called out.

"Make her take it back!"

Lucien raised his hand, silencing the murmurs. The pain of our severed bond was etched into his features, but his pride wouldn't let him show weakness. "Victoria Warren, you will recant your rejection and accept your fate."

"Or what?" The words escaped before I could stop them.

His eyes narrowed dangerously. "Or you will be exiled as a rogue."

Layla's smile widened. "Perfect. Let her rot in the wild like the wolfless failure she is."

I felt the trap closing around me—the same trap that had destroyed me in my previous life. But this time, I had a different path.

"Is there a problem here?"

The voice came from the shadows at the edge of the clearing. It was deep, measured, and carried an authority that made even Lucien pause.

From the VIP section reserved for dignitaries, a tall figure emerged. His presence was magnetic, drawing every eye in the crowd. Lycan King Dominic Blackthorne stepped into the moonlight, his silver-threaded hair gleaming.

"Your Majesty," Lucien stammered, his Alpha aura immediately dimming in the presence of superior power.

Dominic didn't acknowledge him. Instead, he walked directly to me, his gaze never leaving mine. Up close, his eyes held a wisdom that seemed ancient, yet his face showed no signs of aging.

"Victoria Warren," he said, his voice low enough that only I could hear. "I've been watching you."

I swallowed hard. "Watching me?"

"The stars showed me your choice tonight." He gestured toward the sky. "Two paths diverge before you. One leads to more suffering. The other..."

He paused, then spoke aloud for all to hear: "I offer you sanctuary in the Lycan Court. A position as my companion, with all the protection and privileges that entails."

Gasps rippled through the crowd. Even Layla's smug expression faltered.

"You would take a wolfless omega?" Lucien asked, disbelief coloring his tone.

"I would take someone who has the courage to choose her own destiny," Dominic corrected him. "The choice is yours, Victoria."

Without hesitation, I extended my palm. "I accept."

Dominic nodded, satisfaction gleaming in his eyes. He produced a small ceremonial dagger from his belt. "Then seal your oath with blood."

I didn't flinch as he made a small cut across my palm. The blood welled up, dark against my skin.

"I swear loyalty to the Lycan throne," I said, the words feeling right on my tongue.

Dominic took my hand, pressing his own palm against mine. "Then it is done."

---

Hours later, I stood at the edge of Silvercrest territory with a single bag containing my few possessions. Bethany had helped me pack, her eyes wide with envy.

"I wish I could leave too," she whispered, handing me a small silver pendant—a parting gift.

"You could," I told her, though we both knew she wouldn't.

Dominic waited at a respectful distance, giving me space for my goodbye to this place that had been both prison and home.

"Victoria!"

Lucien's voice tore through the night as he raced toward us, his face twisted with desperation. "You can't do this!"

"She already has," Dominic replied calmly.

Lucien ignored him, his eyes fixed on me. "This isn't over. You're mine—the Moon Goddess decreed it!"

"You rejected that decree when you marked another," I said coldly.

"I can fix this!" He lunged forward, grabbing my wrist. "Come back to the pack. Come back to me!"

Something snapped inside me then—eighteen years of submission, seven months of captivity, and a lifetime of being told I was worthless.

"Let. Me. Go."

The words came out as a roar that shook the trees. My eyes burned like fire, and for the first time in my life, I felt something stir deep within me—my wolf, awakening from its long dormancy.

Lucien stumbled backward, his face pale with shock as my eyes flashed brilliant amber in the darkness.

"You're not wolfless," he whispered.

I stepped across the boundary line, leaving Silvercrest territory forever. The moment my foot touched neutral ground, I felt the last threads of our mate bond snap completely.

Lucien collapsed to his knees, a howl of agony tearing from his throat as the full weight of our severed connection hit him.

I turned away, my wolf stirring within me, no longer dormant but awake and hungry for freedom.
