Chapter 2

The emergency partners' meeting at Harrington & Reed had been called for seven AM. I sat in the glass-walled conference room, still wearing last night's dress, my makeup smudged and my hair falling from its elegant updo. I hadn't slept. I hadn't eaten. I'd spent the night watching my life unravel in real time across every social media platform and news outlet in London.

"Victoria." Eleanor Reed, my mentor and the firm's senior partner, slid her tablet across the mahogany table. Her usually warm eyes were cold with disappointment. "Explain this."

The screen showed headline after headline:

"BRILLIANT BARRISTER'S DESPERATE PURSUIT"

"VICTORIA STONE: FROM COURTROOM TO SCANDAL"

"WEST HEIR'S STALKER FINALLY EXPOSED"

Below each headline, photos of me from last night—mouth agape, champagne glass falling, face twisted with shock and pain. In every image, I looked exactly like what they were calling me: a desperate woman who'd been publicly humiliated.

"The West family has released a statement," James Harrington announced from the head of the table, his voice carrying the weight of forty years in law. "They're expressing concern about your... inappropriate pursuit of their son despite his engagement to Ms. Ashford."

"That's not—" I started, then stopped. What could I say? That I was Alexander's wife? That our marriage certificate was locked in his safe alongside a contract that forbade me from ever acknowledging our relationship publicly?

"The situation has become untenable," Eleanor continued, her voice softer but no less final. "Our clients are concerned about the firm's reputation. The Pemberton merger alone is worth fifty million in fees, and they've specifically requested that you be removed from the team."

Fifty million pounds. My career reduced to a line item in a budget meeting.

"I've dedicated six years to this firm," I said, hating how my voice cracked. "My record speaks for itself."

"Your record isn't in question," Harrington replied. "Your judgment is."

The words hit like a slap. These people had watched me work eighteen-hour days, sacrifice relationships, miss family gatherings—all in service to the firm. And now, because of one night, one photograph, one carefully orchestrated lie, it was all gone.

"Clean out your office today," Eleanor said, unable to meet my eyes. "Security will escort you."

I stared at the elevator buttons through tears, my cardboard box of personal belongings growing heavier with each floor. Six years of my life reduced to a few photos, a coffee mug, and a small succulent plant that had somehow survived in my windowless office.

The elevator opened directly into Alexander's penthouse office suite. Of course—the keycard I'd forgotten to return, the one that gave me access to his private domain fifty floors above London.

He was standing at the floor-to-ceiling windows, hands clasped behind his back as he surveyed his kingdom. Still in his perfectly tailored tuxedo from last night, he looked untouchable, unmoved by the destruction he'd caused.

"I lost my job," I said without preamble, setting down my box with a thud that echoed in the vast space.

He turned slowly, his expression unreadable. "I heard."

"You heard?" I laughed, a broken sound that seemed to surprise us both. "You orchestrated it."

"Victoria—"

"Three years, Alexander. Three years I kept your secret. Three years I played the perfect invisible wife while you built your public life without me." My voice was rising, but I couldn't stop it. "And last night you stood in front of three hundred people and called me a stalker."

"The arrangement with Camilla is necessary," he said, his tone infuriatingly calm. "The merger requires—"

"I don't care about your merger!" The words exploded from me with a force that made him step back. "I'm your wife!"

"You were part of a business deal," he corrected, his voice turning cold. "Don't romanticize what this was."

The words hit me like ice water. Part of a business deal. Not a person with feelings, with hopes, with a heart that had somehow, stupidly, fallen in love with a man who saw her as a line item in a contract.

"The papers are being drawn up," he continued, reaching for a manila envelope on his desk. "The divorce will be quick and quiet. There's a settlement that should—"

"Keep your money." I moved toward the elevator, my legs unsteady. "But I want you to know something, Alexander. Last night, when you kissed her, when you announced your engagement, when you let them call me those names—you didn't just humiliate me. You showed me exactly who you really are."

The elevator doors began to close between us, and for just a moment, I saw something crack in his perfectly controlled facade.

"And for the first time in three years," I whispered as the doors sealed shut, "I'm grateful."
